Now back to these donuts: * Coconut Cake (top left) * Apple Fritter (top right) * Lemon Glaze (bottom) I went gluten-free in 2010, before I discovered Krispy Kreme, so I have never experienced the joy of a hot donut. Until yesterday. The Lemon Glaze is cooked to order and served warm, and I am prepared to make the bold statement that it may be the best donut I've ever had in my life. Yup, I said what I said. The Apple Fritter gave me serious coffee roll vibes, which is something I've missed terribly, so that was an unexpected win. And all three passed the ultimate gluten-free test: they didn't taste or feel gluten-free. Honestly, I'd recommend this place even if you're not gluten-free. My first thought was that they were smaller than anticipated -- especially for that price tag. Still, I was excited, happily shot a photo, and bit into the French Toast. Aaaand all I could taste was grease. I understand they had just come out of the fryer, but... what? It did not taste like French Toast in the slightest bit, which was a bummer. Next up, the Captain Cranky had a strawberry glaze and captain crunch on it. I told my friend that the topping was the best part. This one was otherwise just as greasy. I realize they were likely overwhelmed by the number of people wanting their donuts, but I do wish this had been a better experience. If I ever stumble upon them in the city, I'll give them a second try, but I certainly won't go out of my way to wait in a crazy long line for them again.

Points off for rude service though. Their donuts aren't that unique; I wouldn't go back only to be rushed through by a gruff staff. The service was amazing and it fast especially for one person, the bagels were put together nicely and tasted as if it was made carefully. The place itself was a very "hole in the wall" kinda place it is definitely a place you have to be aware that it's there, I would love for there to be an area to sit down inside but it's small so it's understandable. Overall they did a very good job with the bagels and the service and I hope they can grow to make it to a larger spot, will definitely be returning.

Focaccia was moist and flavorful, great for sharing at my family party. Didn't get to taste pretzel because it was for my boyfriend. Tip 1: Come here before 9! I came too late at 10am one day and everything was already sold out. Kettle Black fans are BIG fans! In warmer months, people might start lining up at 7:30 just before opening at 8 for the best stuff. The second time I came, I rolled up at 8:45 to find a long but reasonable line. Like, maybe a 15 min wait to get inside. Some items (everything cheddar bagel and pretzel bun) were sold out, but many items were still in stock. Tip 2: Get specialty cream cheese. I got a bacon cheese pepper cream cheese, which had thick chunks of bacon mixed throughout and it was much better than expected thanks to the meatiness. There typically aren't sandwiches like lox bagels available. Tip 3: Highly recommend the hot coffee. It's their own blend that they get from a specialty roaster and it's got this mellow flavor without being bitter or sour. I needed to put in extra effort to get here, so I wouldn't come in every week. But it's a nice treat every other month. Other notes: Staff was very accommodating and patient, seemed happy to be there, and gave me great advice. Not a place to sit and eat, more of a grab-and-go.
