This review is solely for the massage. I don't know if they have multiple massage therapists, and I rarely leave a poor review, but this was the worst massage of my life. $100 for a very uncomfortable massage that didn't feel good at all. As a standard, I get deep tissue Thai massages, but I also enjoy a European style relaxation massage. At Dosha, If the massage therapist could have chosen the least relaxing moves/awkward techniques, she did. She basically shook my body awkwardly and found very uncomfortable pressure points to squeeze. This wasn't like the "hurt so good" kind of pain, it was the ticklish, odd and uncomfortable pain. She even scratched me with her nails and I had visible scratches 6 hours after my massage. I can't explain how unrelaxing it was. She started by shaking my body and barely touching me with any pressure, but then she solely focused on two knots in my mid back for like 15 minutes! It was way too much focus in one spot with no relief and it wasn't the good kind of pain. I couldn't wait for the foot massage because I figured you couldn't mess that up. But she rubbed the TOP of my feet so hard and in very uncomfortable places! It was so weird, and to top it off I smelled her BO the whole time... I know this is Portland, so maybe people prefer to be au naturelle, but if you are in this field it is so important to have good hygiene. So disappointing. read more

I received the WORST massage I have ever had at the Dosha on 5th avenue. I had booked a Swedish massage but instead received something completely different. She only worked on 3 areas of my body and was pushing pressure points in those areas the entire time. At one point I could feel her nails scratching me in between pushing into my muscles. It was not relaxing and very uncomfortable. She also had me do hip exercises like I was in physical therapy. I wanted the massage to be over once it started. I am so disappointed that I wasted my time and money at this place. I walked away feeling in pain and the next day it felt like my lower back and neck were bruised. I can not believe this woman is employed as a massage therapist. I will never spend money at or recommend Dosha again. WORST experience!!! read more

Nice salon filled with Aveda product. If you're a man getting a haircut don't come here ever. I was staying at the hotel adjoined to this salon, and thought I would get a haircut.-Simple haircut. The stylist did a great job. Just like the last 3 times I've got a simple haircut for $45. But here? It was a $75 haircut without tip. First the good: I love the end result, love the length, love the color, and I appreciated all the questions I was asked throughout. They did a great job with COVID safety (I'm an epidemiologist and care), and I think the atmosphere was as pleasant as most Aveda salon. I love Aveda products and have have been getting my hair done through them since preteen years. The bad: Looking at my receipt, I really should have raised some questions while checking out, but I was tired and hungry and wanted to go home. Still, the extra charges are a bit of a shock. I left a good tip, so my total cost for a haircut and color was just under $400. That's steep in my experience. It looks like they added on some charges for hair styling and some mysterious "80G" without telling me. Surcharges are somewhat normal, but this one was excessive, too. Overall, am not happy with this price. I'll pay that money as a tip when I like the service, but I don't like being forced to without even being given the option to opt out of the added services. They should really mention that these services cost extra money. read more

Kayla is AMAZING! My hair never looked better. I've been coloring my hair with her, after I was ready to give up. My hair was looking dry, dull and boring. Now my hair looks shiny and healthy, and keep in mind that I can't stylist my hair, I'm useless in that department. But her hair cuts are spot on, and look great no matter what. I strained my back so badly that it was painful to breathe, and she was able to work out the knots and loosen my hips to relieve the pain. She is truly a miracle worker. I just wanted a quick eyebrow waxing like I would get from Gene Juarez in Seattle: quick, professional, clean. I was burned. As a guy, I have very little experience in wax going awry. When I noticed the redness, the esthetician said that it may be a reaction to the wax. Yeah, YOU BURNED ME. Burning skin with hot wax would be a reaction wouldn't it? In their defense, the front desk did ask me how everything went. I showed her my burned skin and they knocked off 1/2 the price. In hindsight, I shouldn't have paid (and tipped) for a mistake. And they should have recovered better, by offering a free service for the future or a jar of Aveda Comforting Tea. Cause I needed some comfort. read more

I spent a week on vacation in Portland last summer, and decided to treat myself to a half-head blonde highlights and trim with Dosha. The reviews looked great, staff seemed friendly and the salon looked clean. I have gone to Aveda Institutes before in Canada and the US, so I was expecting the same level of service at this Salon. I was not able to book an appointment directly with the salon, in stead I had to call their head office. I explained I needed some blonde highlights and a trim. But that I would need extra time to get the red-ish streaks out of my hair as well - which I was willing to pay for. She assured me there would be enough time for these services. I was booked with a junior - which worked out great for me at past aveda salons - so I wasn't worried at all before the appointment. Well, I got there, the junior consulted with the manager as she was unsure how to bleach out the red. She started putting in the highlights, but then just 'painting' over the red parts in huge chunks!! After 4 foils she said she wouldn't have time for the trim, which was hugely disappointing. I wanted to get out of the chair and walk away, but was stuck with these foils! After hours (literally!) of highlighting and processing time, she then washed everything out and exuded to use a warm toner on the back of my hair, and a cool toner for the hair in the front around my face - WORST IDEA! Never heard of this new 'technique' and several other hair dressers I asked subsequently thought this was ludicrous too. In the end, my hair looked terrible. Extremely dry and brittle from the (way too long) processing time, and random 'patches' of blonde in wrong places. Now almost a year later, I finally recovered from this mistake by going ombré and dying half of my hair darker to cover up the bad highlights. And a serious trim to get rid of damaged hair. I called the office and head office several times to complain, but no answer. Terrible customer service. The salon themselves said they couldn't do anything, that I needed to call their head office. Don't go here! Spend your money somewhere else. read more

Ok, it's Dosha and I'm not a hipster nor do I have wads of cash flowing from my pockets, so I don't expect rock star status. However, my stylist Kalli, moved from Salon In Vogue to here and I followed her (go see her and you won't be disappointed). They're expensive, snotty, and better than you--get over it everyone else has. I don't go here for them, though. Don't go. Don't go. Don't go!! My regular stylist is on maternity leave so I booked an appointment at this salon. I wanted my gray covered to blend with my current color, and a trim. The site says they offer a color consultation. The color consultation I got was "ok, I'll give you golden highlights" (my hair is dark brown with lowlights). I tell her no, no bleach! Her response is "yeah, some people get nervous about that." Implying I asked for it but then got cold feet, I guess? So she lays a single swatch of color against my hair (in really dim light) and says "perfect" and walks away. Consultation over. She leaves the color in about half as long as she should. Then she does not rinse it all out!! I had to go out to dinner afterwards with sticky dye against the nape of my neck. She literally spent more time blow drying my hair than she did actually coloring it. And at the end of the appointment even SHE said it didn't take evenly. But didn't offer to fix it. Anyone can see that this color doesn't match the rest of my hair. The gray shows through and there are orangey and red pieces (again, I have dark hair) I called today to tell the receptionist my experience and a) no refunds, only re-dos. Fine, but b) because my appointment was with a junior stylist (not through choice, I was given no option when I booked it) if I want a "master stylist" to fix my hair, there will be another charge. So my choices are: take my chances with another junior stylist at Dosha, or leave a bad review to warn others away. If you go to their website (I sure wish I had ahead of time) you'll notice there are a lot of unhappy people who have been offered a redo. This is their business model I guess. I repeat: don't go!!! Today was my third visit to Dosha, and I'm ready to post my review for all to see. I've had great services here, and I like that they have specials for hotel guests (which I have been all 3 times). The spa itself is kinda small, but it has everything that you could want: changing rooms/lockers, shower, steam room, treatment rooms and waiting area with magazines. I love the Aveda products and am super pleased with the facial, massages and waxing that I've had done. As long as I keep coming to Portland for work, I'll keep coming here for some "me time". read more

A few friends gave me gift certificates to Dosha for my birthday so I figured I'd try something I've never done before. I got a Brazilian wax. I'd been curious but not brave enough to try it. The Dosha spa is pretty nice: darkly lit, candles, flowers, and Enya music. The tech that did my wax, Elizabeth, was great. She was really nice, seemed knowledgeable and was friendly. The waxing experience was somewhat awful, however. I had heard from friends that have done this before that some places offer numbing ointment before the procedure. I asked when I got there and was told no. OUCH!!! If I was going to attempt a brazilian/bikini wax again, I'd try and find someplace that numbs the area first!! read more

I really wanted to like this place, but after giving it three solid tries, it's just... not.... good :( It seems like most of their positive reviews are about the hair salon services, so perhaps those are worth checking out, unsure. I had a manicure and two massages over three different occasions. The manicure was terrible. The manicurist was super nice, peppy, friendly (after she finally tracked down a chair for the nail station)... but her work was dreadful :( She forgot to do a base coat, didn't soak the nails at any point in the process, buffed to a near-painful degree, and did a terrible job on both the nail tidying and the polish. It all mostly peeled off within a day or two, but I wasn't too sad, since it looked terrible and messy to begin with. The massages themselves were okay, good not great, but most of my disappointment was related to the environment. On both occasions I waited 10 minutes or so beyond my appointment time to be seen. Whatever massage table and linens they use just felt super cheap. I'm used to massages being relaxing and quiet--but the sheets rustling and table creaking were noisy and distracting throughout the entirety of the sessions. The location is super convenient for me and the prices are reasonable, so I'm sad that the overall quality was so poor. read more

When I first moved to Portland, I had to give up my old stylist in California-- so naturally I was full of doubt and skepticism over finding a new stylist. I cut and colored my own hair for a few months and braved Bishops once before I said enough was enough; and, was assigned Melissa Stoner as my stylist upon calling the reservations line. Melissa is a brilliant stylist... She will never let me do anything stupid-- knows my head, knows how my hair responds and behaves... she knows what I need for my eye color, glasses, and complexion. Even when I decided to go brunette (I am a natural blonde), she did it in the most flattering and healthy way possible. When we went back, I had no loss of luster and no damage. Suffice it to say, there's a fine line between being able to manage and style hair versus being an intuitive artist. I would identify Melissa as the latter. I have been a client of Melissa's for almost five years now... through my engagement, wedding (she is GREAT for wedding hair), and multiple styles and colors. I have sent her coworkers, friends, my matron of honor, and now my husband. They have all continued seeing her. You are depriving yourself if you don't see her too. read more

Kalli is STELLAR with a capital 5-STARS in being super FRIENDLY, ATTENTIVE to your desired look, and ACCOMMODATING in making sure you are always comfortable & having a relaxing salon experience ! She gave me highlights and even re-adjusted them with adding some lowlights to give me a soft look that I desired. She really did a spot-on job of putting in lowlights that match my own color. I can't believe it's taken me this long to post a review! Before I met Kayla, I had gone through some hair hell. A previous salon destroyed my hair, over bleaching it and turning it pink. When I saw Kayla, I was at a point where I was having a hard time trusting stylists. But she has proven to me time and time again that not only is she an amazing hair stylist and colorist, but I really truly trust her with my hair. Finally! She goes above and beyond. I can describe what I want to her and she makes it happen. Like magic. Today I had her do a complicated shag haircut and explained to her I didn't want it to thin out my hair and somehow she did it without making my hair feel thinned out, it was amazing! OMG he gave me the best haircut and did the best color EVER! Compliments all around from family and friends. And, I spend way, way less time on my hair and it looks way, way better. I had a really pleasant experience at Dosha! Stopped by here on my last day in Portland to get a quick bang trim. Customer service is great--was offered water and they hung up my jacket. Natalie gave me a bang trim and was really sweet and did a great job. Afterward, the staff did ask if I needed any hair products on my way back to California, but didn't push me when I said I didn't, which I appreciated. My friend and I learned about this place at the Portland Wedding Convention, where they had a booth set up and a contest to win a free massage/hair styling. A week later she called me and told me all of the little drawings we entered paid off - she had won a free visit with the spa package. She went, loved it, and then scheduled us for massages the next time I came to town for a bridesmaid dress fitting. I had a swedish massage and thoroughly enjoyed the spa facility. He rushed through it, cut off more than I asked for, barely spoke to me and pressured me into making a future appointment despite my saying I wasn't interested in that currently. I had a terrible week before vacation. I needed some "me" time! First, I had the Shellac manicure with silver sparkles. They agreed that cuticles shouldn't be cut and were very gentle with the pushing instrument. I complained that the last person who did Shellac (in California) didn't massage my hands or put lotion on it, and it was the exact same price. We both thought that was ridiculous. Everyone who saw them said my nails were very pretty. Next, I had a Swedish Massage from Erin. I really did not expect a lot from the salon for $70 (they give you the bare minimum in the Bay Area), but they had a shower, steam room, and snacks before the massage. The massage itself was so relaxing I almost fell asleep. Darn it, Dosha. You spoiled me. Now I can't accept anything less. read more

Let me just start out by saying, I love Aveda salons and their products. I recently went into to Dosha Fifth Ave for a facial from Kira. It was great! Just the relaxation I needed. My skin gets very dry from my job and Kira gave me an intense moisturizing facial that left my skin feeling hydrated and soft for days! I also go into Dosha to get my hair cut by Kira as well. I have been seeing her for almost two years now and I love what she does with my hair! I always leave the salon feeling more beautiful than when I walked in. I have pretty long hair and Kira always gives me really nice layers that add the volume I need for having such long hair that tends to lay flat. Also, she gives one great blow out! I recently had a facial here and it was excellent. The atmosphere and products were top notch. I really enjoyed the visit and it was beyond my expectations. Amanda F. was my guide into a sensual journey and she was wonderful about targeting my skin problems and providing solutions. She was extremely knowledgeable and she had tried most of the products I was using and could identify why they weren't achieving the results I was looking for. Through her trial and error I was able to learn what methods produce results and skip my own experiments. She was really down to earth and nice! Didn't try to sell me on anything or be too pushy - just shared her own thoughts and really focused on my concerns. I had a really great massage by Heather Keever at Dosha downtown last week. I went in with sciatic pain, radiating to my knee. I left completely loose and painfree. She spent time talking to me and assessing my physical and emotional needs. I recommend Heather Keever in the highest regard. I've only had one cut here so far but Kari did a great job cleaning up and shaping my hair. She listened to what I wanted (keep the length, layer it, etc.) and did what I asked, which for me is literally what makes or breaks a haircut. The staff were all very friendly and accommodating. I am thankful I stumbled across Kalli in the pre-Yelp days. I have now been a fan of hers for about a decade. She is amazing as both a stylist and a person. Every time I have left her chair, I have not been disappointed. She listens to what I am looking for (which is usually a very nebulous idea -- as I am a dreamer at heart) and is always able to distill it down to something workable. I have never left chair her disappointed. And as a person, she is unparalleled. She and I have been tracking each others lives for the years. Every time I see her, it's like connecting with an old BFF -- you pick up right where you left of She is also awesome with trainees. I have been going to Dosha for the whole five years I've lived in Oregon!!!!! I go here for the dye. I get an all over cut and color. Their Aveda products are my fave. I used to go to the Bridgeport location, but moved downtown. So, here I go. I almost always see a different stylist, because a trim and color looks the same no matter who does it. This location is great, because it's right next to Hotel Monaco. Hotel Monaco provides complementary wine and munchies to the Dosha clients. LOVE IT. So, I Walk the few blocks from my place to Dosha for Hair Time and Happy Hour. My hair always looks great!! Ask anyone. I also get a great hand massage while my color sets. FYI, keep your nice things close and safe, because once they set a hot iron on my coach bag, but was told by the HR honcho that I was responsible for my own property. :/ read more
