This long time icon of the San Luis Valley is so good ! as I write this my mouth waters for the delicious native Mexican food served by the family who has served generations here. This is not a big city restaurant and it should not be compared to one. reviews of that nature miss the reality of what this amazing restaurant does for a community. it is good , mouth watering food, I wait for months to have. there is nothing like it and I do search for it in the cities . please go try it out and enjoy a relaxed atmosphere where the owner will come out and chat with you about the area. enjoy !!the fact it isn't the city and enjoy small town America !! read more

Went here with the family. My daughter used to love this restaurant. This time it was not that impressive. The food was not that good. Also, the cleanliness of this restaurant is very lacking. I am surprised they are not shut down. The bathrooms are disgusting! I don't even want to know what the kitchen looks like. We won't be back. read more

There are not many places to eat in Monte Vista. But Dos Rios is one worth visiting. The menu is not lengthy, but the offerings are good, typical fare for the region. They boast of a decent green chili, I also enjoyed the Chile Relleno. It's not very expensive, children friendly, and has a modest ambience with a fireplace in the corner. The restaurant is about a mile and a half north of highway 160, on Broadway which is also called the Gunbarrel. read more

I used to work at this restaurant and I have such fond memories of going home in my white shirt and black pants splattered with the yummy salsa. I remember trying to eat here the weekend they opened and we had to wait over an hour--for my small town this is unheard of. The place continued to be the "go-to" restaurant for any occasion whatsoever. I loved the chimichangas, crispy rellenos, beef burritos and taco salads. I loved the Sunday brunches with mimosas--my mom just gave me sips. ;-) read more

So, we live in Albuquerque, NM and are familiar with Mexican and New Mexican cuisine and Hatch green chili (plug). We were visiting Monte Vista for my 60th high school reunion(!) and the reunion dinner was at Dos Rios. I am always looking for a good chili relleño and found one here! One of the best relleños I've had in quite a while. Plus, the little banquet room off to the right was just right-size for what was remaining standing of our graduating class of 44 souls. Dos Rios has been a staple for me for a very long time. While it's not my favorite Mexican restaurant in the Valley, it is one that I always go back to. This chips did not taste as fresh as I remember, but I do love their salsa. So many places offer bland salsa, but not here. The salsa has a good flavor to it and it packs a little heat with it as well. This last visit was particularly enlightening as I tried something I had never had before. The Carne Asada burrito smothered in green chili was especially tasty. The steak was full of flavor and the green chili has so much more flavor than the bland green enchilada sauce that so many other places offer up. Walking into Dos Rios brings back so many good memories of sharing good food with good friends. While the restaurant is not what it once was, it still serves up some tasty good and I will continue to make my way back there on my next visits to the Valley. read more

About 6 months ago I had a good meal here. I ate there tonight with my parents (3/7/2013) and it was just unbelievably BAD. Everything was alarmingly salty: the beans, the enchiladas, the rice. Service was slow and when my plate came it looked like it had been cooking under a heat light. It took them ages to process the credit card payment. The waitress was very friendly and helpful, but that does not compensate for a really dreadful meal. If you want good Mexican food in Monte Vista, go to Nino's. DO NOT go here. read more

My FH's parents eat here often and we all went one night for buffet dinner. I have to tell you that I am quite a fan of this little place. The buffet is small with but you can stack up on tacos, enchiladas and other yummy food. The salsa is a kicker with tons of good flavor. It's definately worth a try. read more

I was hopeful that under new management the food and service would be an par with what I remember the restaurant being years ago. What a letdown. We were seated by a young man who I am guessing must be a mute. We then waited 15 minutes before our waitress took our drink order. She managed to bring our drinks out and take our order after a while. Our food came out around the one hour mark. We had the combination platter and the beef chimi. The beef on both plates tasted like it was old or just oddly seasoned. The green chili was bland and the chili rellenos were very small. I realize that on busy nights these thing can happen but on a Tuesday night I expect a little more. I don't think I will be back. read more

This restaurant is very wonderful and especially on Thursday evening when Fred Hargrove plays his guitar and sings from about 6 to 8:00pm. How great that is to be able to eat the good food and listen to a really nice guy who does a good job playing and singing. My friends and I ate here on a trip to Monte Vista based on the previous review. Half the restaurant was "closed" ( lights off and all ), I'm guessing to the lack of regular clients. My husband and I went here last night and had very slow, poor quality service and mediocre food. It took over an hour from the time we were seated until our food came out and when the food finally did come out, it was not what we ordered. We decided to keep the food that we received though since it had taken so long. As we were leaving, the hostess asked how everything was, so we told her what happened and she relayed it to the owner. The owner said it was our fault that the food didnt come out right because we made a special request (we only asked for red chili instead of green) and he also said there was nothing that could be done about the speed of the service because they were very very busy (with 4 tables seated including our own for a total of 14 or so people). I really like Dos Rios. It's a popular spot here in Monte Vista and sometimes there's (good!) live music. There's a buffet that's popular with people. I haven't tried it. My favorite dish here -- and I always get it -- is beefsteak tampiqueña (or carne asada tampiqueña but it's not called that on the menu). Both the red and green chili are great. read more

While staying at the nearby Best Western, the town's health inspector (Carol) stopped in. I asked her what Mexican restaurant she would recommend...She said Dos Rios! Turns out that Dos Rios catered her daughter's recent wedding reception. You know if the health inspector dines there, you can trust it!! We stopped in for dinner and were thrilled. There were five hungry kids and two adults. At the end, there was only one piece of lettuce (and an errant fry) left on the plate! Everything was snarfed down. The food was amazing! The service was quite good, but the food was pretty mediocre. I feel bad about this since everyone was so nice, but the fajitas and carne asada were overdone and dry, both the refried beans and the guacamole were liquidy and flavorless, and everything was pretty bland. The sopapillas were heavy and doughy, although we liked having the honey available at our table. The bathrooms were in pretty bad shape, and not clean to boot.
