Jug of margarita
Makanaka T.

The first time I went to Dos Amigos Cantina, I was having one of those 'I am so hungry but don't know what to eat' moments. After walking up and Tamaki Drive for the 5th time I saw these two men wearing what I'm guessing is Mexican traditional attire. They were playing the most beautiful sound from guitars and were singing in harmony. For me that was a sign from the gods to head into the restaurant. To my disappointment the restaurant was full and when the manager said please leave me your number and I will text you when a table is free. When he said that my heart sank and I walked away thinking he isn't going to text me. Luckily my boyfriend likes to give individuals benefit of the doubt so we decided to wait for 30 minutes and if no text came through we would take our empty stomaches elsewhere. To my surprise, the manager texted us and in no time we where seated enjoying a jug of margarita. I ordered the ribs and these were perfectly spiced and marinated, and my boyfriend had the beef chimichanga. I can safely say this is one of the best Mexican restaurants in Auckland. Value for money and those jugs of margaritas have me coming back for more.

My first visit to Dos Amigos was in early June 2010, when this place was just shy of its opening- and I've been a repeat customer ever since! My partner have taken quite a few friends here and made them fans of the cantina too. The place is very lively and accommodates pretty well for groups but can be a tight squeeze on busy nights! So booking would be essential as you don't want to miss out. Birthdays at Dos Amigos are always a great sight, with a small mariachi band singing happy birthday in big, colourful sombreros and insisting on a shot or two for the lucky birthday boy or girl. My favorite dish is their chicken quesadilla, I highly recommend this for a first timer at Dos Amigos, its a great way to enhance your Mexican food palette and its full of flavour (and cheese!). I commend them on their work with their churros, they are a work of art! One of the best in Auckland, and the recipe has stayed the same since its opening. Their deep fried ice cream also deserves an honorable mention. The owners of Dos Amigos are truly dedicated and that is seen in their menu and their establishment- a great stop in Mission Bay!

We come here a lot because Mexican food is thin on the ground in Auckland which is irritating. I hate it when we STILL lag behind the rest of the world. Nevermind, nothing wrong with a drive to the Mish, especially when it's followed by Chilli Beer, Margaritas and spicy food. This is another family favourite as there is a terrarium with bearded dragons (lizards) and birthday celebrations are noisy with optional sombreros. The service is a bit hit and miss - there's something that makes you feel like the smiles are fake and really they can't stand their customers. I'd have to say this mainly applies to the Maitre'D so perhaps he just has issues. Thankfully the food makes up for it. Go easy on the quantities - like all Mexican food it's filling and the portions are BIG. We love their Bean Dip and can't go past getting the Guacamole as well and the next thing you know we haven't even got to the main course and we're stuffed. I've also had the Vegetarian Quesadilla and the Vegetarian Enchiladas and everything is delicioso. The Taco Salad is great too and comes in a giant crispy tortilla bowl. I totally recommend the Cave Creek Chilli beer - it comes with a chilli inside and actually has a fairly serious kick which is great as I find most chilli beers are too mild for me. The Margarita menu is extensive and I've only tried the La Esencial which is your classic lime-based version. I don't doubt that I will be sampling others in future and of course you can get them by the jug or by the glass, and there's a huge range of tequilas as well if you feel like going on a bender. Just not when you're driving the kids home!

Was looking for somewhere to have a small bite before dinner and my friend and I walked into this place and fell in love how the restaurant was set out. Talk about walking into Mexico! They even have cool sombreros to wear super chill and staff were pretty cool too. Would definitely pay them another visit

Yummy margaritas!

Mexico is one of my favourite eateries in Auckland, for its vibrant and fresh Mexican cuisine,…read moreextensive tequila list and super funky and delicious Frida's margaritas. Their menu boasts a wide range of dishes, and there is definitely something for everyone's tastes. I also love the fact that their menu is so versatile - you can come here for margaritas and some snacks, or have a three course meal, or just order a three lots of their famous fried chicken and you will be set for the night! Speaking of fried chicken, my favourite dish on Mexico's menu is, and always will be, the Mexico Fried Chicken. It is spicy, served with the perfect sauces (chipotle mayo and jalapeno mayo) and I guarantee you will be licking your fingers. I even ordered it for my birthday buffet lunch last year, check it out on my blog. Last week, Mexico launched their new Autumn menu. It is full of earthy local produce, like beetroot, celeriac, butternut pumpkin and black plums, plus there are brand new tacos, snacks, specialties and salads. Mexico has also taken note of fan's requests to have more vegan and gluten free menu items, so they have added three new dishes with the Guajillo Mushroom Taco, Pan Roasted Cauliflower Taco and Crispy Chickpea and Pumpkin Salad. And for all you margarita lovers, there are new Frida's Margaritas flavours! I'm eyeing up the Pineapple and Cracked Pepper and the Raspberry and Elderflower. If you want something without alcohol, there are also two new sugar-free sodas to choose from - Classic Lemonade and Turmeric and Ginger Tonic. I visited Mexico in Britomart on two occasions to check out their new menu - for a weekday lunch, then lunch on Saturday. Starting with drinks, I LOVE their new Raspberry and Elderflower Margarita. I have had it twice because it is divine... refreshing, sweet, and the perfect accompaniment to the spicy dishes. Also, the Mango and Passionfruit Margarita went down a treat too. And for a great non-alcoholic option, we recommend their Turmeric and Ginger Tonic Soda. Delicious! For snacks, we loved their new Beetroot Hummus Dip, served with cricket tortillas. Super crunchy tortillas, which I enjoyed. On the second occasion, we tried the dip with fresh tortillas, which were equally as good. Another highlight were the Croquetas, filled with potato and smoky queso (cheese), green onion, candied almonds and remoulade. These were melt in your mouth! Along with their lip smacking Fried Chicken, Mexico are also known for their tacos. On the first occasion, I enjoyed the Beef Carnita Taco, with white sesame, chipotle, coriander, crispy ginger and Baja Fish Taco, with red slaw, mayonnaise, chili and coriander (not pictured). Second time, I tried one of Mexico's new tacos - the Pan Roasted Cauliflower Taco... it is vegan! While I loved the colours, I found it strange... having not had cauliflower in a taco before! It was also too spicy for me. Thank goodness for the margaritas! Continuing with the vegetarian dishes, we also tried their new Crispy Chickpea and Pumpkin Salad with cucumber, lime & chipotle dressing and candied sesame. It didn't scream Mexico to me, but it was tasty nonetheless and had wonderful textures. Like the Croquetas, another highlight were the Chimichangas, which are essentially deep fried burritos. At Mexico, these are bite sized and are filled with fried mushroom, leek, chili, queso and cactus and served with a salsa asada - beware it is hot! I had never tried Chimichangas before, so this was a joy to eat. Perfectly fried, flavoursome and we could have ordered seconds...or thirds! And now, for my second love (after the Fried Chicken) - Quesadillas. This delicious morsel is basically a tortilla filled with cheese and heated. However, you can add any fillings you like. Mexico does a great vegetarian one - Portobello Mushroom, with spinach, smoky queso and chili, served with a blackened onion crema. And, my oh my, that crema! They also have two other options - Chicken in Mole Amarillo and Coffee Agave Lamb, which sound divine, so much so, I will have to come back and try them both! Aside from the food, another reason why Mexico is one of my favourite eateries is the decor. Having being a fan of Mexican sugar skulls (and skulls in general) for a very long time, whenever I walk into Mexico, I feel right at home. The colourful walls are covered in memorabilia from Mexico, including artworks of Frida Kahlo and influences from Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), plus loads of cacti. It is definitely one of the most fun restaurants to visit in Auckland! If you are not able to get to Mexico in Britomart, there are four other locations in Auckland - Ponsonby, Ellerslie, Takapuna and most recently, Sylvia Park. Plus, there are restaurants in Hamilton, Wellington and Christchurch. Happy taco-ing!

You order and pick up your food at the counter. The salsa and hot sauce they provide was a great add. Ambiance was your typical airport restaurant. Honestly would go here again this food was fantastic.

Oi my gosh, this was exactly what I needed today! I have had Lucky Taco's tacos many times, but…read moretoday was the first time I tried the De Sesos (lamb brains) and Lucky Lengua (beef tongue) tacos! One thing I have always appreciated was that fact that their tacos have an amazing balance of citrus, creamy (I think it's the avo cream/sour cream), spice, and savoury. And if it's not hot enough the jalapeño hot sauce will do the trick if it's not spicy enough! The beef was divine - whatever they marinated it in was amazing. Literally hit the nail on the head. It was juicy, tender, and slightly spicy. Honestly I didn't now what to expect anyway as I can't remember what beef tongue tastes like. If it were a blind tasting I probably wouldn't have guessed tongue! The brains were... Interesting. It was kind of yellowish-greenish in colour. It was swimming in all sorts of greenery and cabbage though so colour palette-wise it actually complimented well! However it had sort of a weird consistency (what do you expect it's brains!) and did not have as much flavour as the tongue. Love the Lucky Taco, love what they are doing. I'd go back for the tongue and Horchata (it's a must and dials down the spice), but I wouldn't run back for the brains. It's novel though, so I'd recommend trying it.

Delicious authentic tacos in either a corn or flour tortilla plus an agua de horchata (sweetened, iced rice milk infused with cinnamon) and you're all set for the day! The owners (Sarah and Otis Frizzell) are so lovely, that you will definitely want to go back! The second time I encountered The Lucky Taco was at The Auckland Food Show this year. They had a great set up at the show and their tacos were just as delicious as the year before. I was also really excited to see Sarah and Otis again and even more excited to try their Pulled Pork Taco. It is absolutely delicious, a bit spicy, but oh so good! They also have a great little set up along Ponsonby Road which I have taken a long time to visit, however, three weeks ago I did! It was the most beautiful sunny day and I just happened to be walking in the area. I tried the 'Breakfast Taco' - spicy chorizo sausage plus an egg (ohmygawd delicious!) and a Pulled Pork Taco, which has a great kick! It will forever be my favourite taco! Sarah and Otis were as friendly as ever and there were many people queuing up for their tacos - you will definitely find out why once you try one! (Or two or three in my case!)
