Riverview Restaurant & Bar - My passionfruit cheesecake. Presentation is lovely but taste not so good

We stopped here for a blended family lunch after my step-brother swung by to catch up. This place…read morewon the "where do we go" lotto due to the online menu. One of the twins is an 'almost vegetarian'. She dislikes the taste and texture of about 95% of all meat. So finding a place that offers more veggie options than plain pasta, salad, or soup is always a bonus. The online menu had a veggie wrap with grilled and roasted vegetables, & a pesto aeoli. Sold. The place itself is nice with both al fresco (unavailable when we got there) and inside dining. It overlooks the river and the view is quite pleasant. We were quickly helped to a table and sat down to decide. Things went a little south at this point. The online menu didn't match up with the physical one and there was no veggie wrap! The other changes didn't matter so much but that was a biggie. However, they were willing to assemble one for us so problem solved. We then waited. And waited. And waited. The food came out in a very staggered fashion to the extent that despite initially waiting a number of people ended up fully finished before the last plate arrived. There's no excuse for that. If you run a restaurant, even if you've cut your staff down for the off-season, you have to be able to serve the table in a timely fashion. The last dish was the soup special too. I would have expected that to be among the first. We speculated that they'd either forgotten the dish or run out and needed to cook more - but with no actual communication from our server we're still not sure. Service issues aside, the staff were very friendly. And the mains were delicious. Youngest ate nachos - an experience for her as she's used to Cali-Mex! Cheese corn chips as a base are, I think, an Australian thing :D There was a copious serving of chilli and healthy dollops of sour cream and guac. No salsa to her surprise but definitely very tasty. Erin had the special - chicken and creamed corn soup. She's become enamoured of this while in Australia. This one was apparently thick, hearty, and very flavourful. Briannah's whipped up wrap vanished - aside from the grilled eggplant. Not her thing. The wrap was stuffed with various veggies and slathered with a very tasty pesto aeoli. I had fish and chips! Barramundi to be precise. I miss Aussie fish and chips badly. Apart from anything else, it's harder to find a crappy serve! This one was beautiful. Fresh flaky barra coated in a very light and crispy batter. No soggy, gluggy, doughy batter here, thanks very much! And, as with all the dishes bar the nachos which were huge, it was a perfect size. Room for a treat afterwards. Everyone else had burger things - open steak sandwich es, open beef burgers, open Turkish sandwiches. No idea on the particulars of each aside from they were delicious and disappeared quickly. We did go for dessert. I wanted to like my dessert so much - passionfruit cheesecake - but I couldn't. It looked fantastic however it was a little stale and the passionfruit topping was dried out and had too much gelatin. Very rubbery. The coffee & macadamia cream cake looked gorgeous. It had a butter cream coffee icing studded with macadamia nuts. Unfortunately it had been chilled and the butter cream was very hard. Butter fresh from the coldest part of the fridge hard. So the flavours couldn't unfold properly. Aside from that, it was tasty. The angel cream cake with strawberries was also tasty although, again, too much gelatin in the glaze. And the butter cream filling was rather firm. The whipped cream and cake were good though. Overall it was disappointing. I really wanted to like the place just because service was so friendly and the mains so tasty. But between the menu mismatch, delays, and the desserts I probably won't.

We, my two friends and I, went to the local fish and chip shop, 'Hooked & Cooked'. At first the the outrageous prices drew me off, but this was 6:30 on a Thursday night. So not much else was open, except for the pub, which I'll get to later. This extremely poor in sized sample of sweet potato chips in which I payed $8.50 for. I waited for what felt like an eternity on this this bucket of despair. Let me tell you about the chips themselves. So I've been to this place before and I've never been impressed with my order, they have a thing for over cooking chips potato and sweet potato, the sweet potato chips are usually a fair bit better, so I'm more inclined to get them. This particular batch however was like eating thick cuts of burned bark scraped from a decaying tree deep in the depths of hell. Charred to a crisp and left and a trail of coal that flooded my mouth as though I was some poor chimney sweep in the 1930s. Unless you wish for a similar experience and morbid exposure of complete horror and wretchedness, honestly I wouldn't recommend coming here. Definitely go to the middle pub instead, just up the road and definitely a preferred option.

After using google to find local chipperies, Hooked & Cooked looked good and we gave it a go. Mullumbimby is known for being a slightly rough town, so be prepared for some slightly rougher Australian types, but from our visit everyone was really pleasant. Prices are good on the menu. There are items such as "Dory" (don't ask me what "Dory" is, but it was delicious!). It was actually quite ridiculously cheap and we bought a whole lot of things, but we did ask for three Dory's and instead of getting 3 sets of 3 Dory's (as advertised on the menu), we were given 3, but we only realised when we got back. Cooking time was quick, and I have to say that all the food was delicious and very well done. Highly recommended if you want a quick takeout and they're open to slightly later than some of the other fish and chips places in the area.

They kindly directed to Fishmongers Byron Bay. We made the right choice. Fish and chips with a twist. They off you a main and basically four options of "sides." You can have chips, rice, tempura veggies, or one other option. My gal pals and I had ordered the calamari, hoki fillets, australian prawns, and barramundi. Everyone was very pleased with their order and full by the end of the meal. Presentation deserves a mention. They make sweet potato chips and use them as a nice decor/top to some of the dishes. Plenty of chips were in the bowl if not too many. I would have liked two lemon wedges but then again, I LOVE lemon. Great place for lunch or takeaway and have on the beach nearby. Would definitely recommend it to someone who was trying to find a fish and chips place that is above average.

Contained: two LARGE pieces of battered barramundi, four calamari, two prawns, two oysters, two potato pancakes and too many chips to finish. De-li-cious. Needed larger sizes of tartar sauce for that much dipping, and a bit pricy at $1 per extra. Our friend ordered the veggie tempura which had every kind of veggie imaginable in delicious batter - cauliflower, corn, broccoli, zucchini, capsicum, mushroom, and more. The seating is limited, but there is patio space to watch the hordes of tourists passing by. BYO wine highly suggested as no liquor avail to purchase. Calamari was worth an order of its own. Servers attentive and friendly despite it being packed. Takeaway is a good option as well, although the presentation of the meal in the large square black bowls is quite appealing.

It's a rarity to find a pub or bar in the hustle and bustle of Surfers Paradise where the staff actually enjoy working there. It definitely makes a difference to the venue's vibe! The bar staff also enjoy a good chat and a bit of banter across the bar and this is one of the few Irish pubs in Surfers that actually employees Irish people! Not only adding to the atmosphere, but it means there are staff who can actually pour a good pint of Guinness! There is live music most nights of the week from 9pm, with a band on every Friday and Saturday night. True to their roots there is also traditional Irish entertainment there every Sunday afternoon. In terms of food it has a great range of pub style food at great prices. I've found the food to always be amazing, even the specials (usually $10-15) are spot on! You definitely can't go past the $10 steaks that they do for lunch and dinner! One of the main things that I LOVE about the food here is that they stick to what they're good at; good quality pub-style food at a reasonable price! This is a great pub that caters for everyone, from families, to older couples and young 20-somethings looking for a good night out, there is something for everyone in Fiddlers. This is a true testament to the hard work and dedication of the owners and management! See you there!
