The texture and flavor of the ice cream is perfect and their menu is so cute and unique to them. I only wish there was a better place to enjoy your treat, more little tables and things. You can find Dorman's Dairy Dream at 189 New County Rd, Thomaston, ME 04861 - this is one of the main drags through town. There's a lot of parking to one side and a few picnic tables under trees at the back if you decide to eat on location - as with many ice cream establishments, you order at a window and wait while they put your order together (no seating inside). We were coming back from dinner nearby and wanted to finish things up a bit with ice cream (the dessert options where we had been didn't appeal to us). Dorman's had been recommended to us by our local friend. It was during the week post-tourist season and everything in Thomaston seems to close fairly early - I think we arrived around 8:45, 15 minutes before closing. We each ordered a Sunday - mine had a scoop of banana and a scoop of pistachio, with chocolate sauce, whip, walnuts and a cherry. The ice cream was very good - high milk fat really is the key here. Perfect dessert, if a bit more expensive than the local DQ - still well worth it. Window service was good with a very patient employee eager to answer all our dumb questions. After driving by Dorman's multiple times and ALWAYS seeing a line, we decided to stop in and see what the fuss was all about. Dorman's is a local ice cream shop that has been serving up handmade ice cream, soft serve, milkshakes, and other dairy delights. We hopped in the line and had to wait about 15ish minutes before making our way to the window where the friendly staff patiently answered our first-timer questions and endulged us while we sampled multiple of their decadent, creamy, and unique flavors. Highly recommend the popular pistachio and grapenut flavors! The grapenut in particular was an interesting flavor (kinda like cereal) that I've never seen or heard of before that was yummy. They have ice creams and toppings that have peanuts, but then have a whole set of precautions to make it safer for those of us navigating a food allergy. The minute I brought up a peanut allergy, the young person at the window took it seriously and knew exactly how to handle it. And the ice cream was delicious! We both went with hard scoop ice cream, though they have soft serve too. He raved about the raspberry chip and oreo flavors. My husband and I went here because it was across the street from the Hampton Inn we were staying at and I noticed the long line outside of it when we were leaving to go to lunch. I checked the Yelp reviews and after seeing them decided we would go after lunch. It lives up to its reputation. The ice cream is great and they serve huge scoops of ice cream. Great ice cream, huge portions. Each time we drove by there was a line to order and pick up, so when we happened by and there weren't a lot of cars we stopped. It's a little bit on the pricey side but the portions are gigantic. A single scoop cone is easily a two scoop cone elsewhere. The coconut chip was delicious coconut ice cream with coconut flakes with flat chocolate flakes/chips. It was outstanding. My traveling companion had mint oreo and it was delicious also with giant chunks of Oreos. Wouldn't hesitate to visit again and try some of the other yummy looking flavors displayed in the window (and change regularly). read more

I am a long time fan of Dorman's Ice Cream and eagerly awaiting its re-opening every season. But I had a bad experience that I felt should be shared. On Friday August 20, 2021; I stopped in for a scoop of my favorite Mocha Chocolate Chip in a waffle cone. I broke a tooth filing biting into the hard round chocolate chip nuggets used now in this ice cream. These nuggets took the place of the rectangular soft chocolate chips used in years past. I now need a $1,200 crown molding on a tooth that has not needed any work in many years. I hope that Dorman's can return to its old chip formulation and get rid of these small, hard chocolate nuggets so that I can once again enjoy my favorite ice cream from my favorite ice cream stand. PROS: generous portions, great prices, local small business, certain flavors have been consistently amazing for years. Not impressed with this local ice cream shop. Ice cream tasted old and had ice crystals through out like it had been thawed and refrozen. I order one scoop in a waffle cone and when they gave me my cone it was cracked and falling apart. The window was quickly closed before I could have said anything. Only a couple benches to sit and eat your ice cream on so be prepared to eat in your car. On the plus side parking spaces are available on both sides of the building. read more

Best ice cream ever. We had the mint chocolate chip which had tons of chips and just the right amount of mint flavor, not too strong and not too mild. We also had the coconut chip. Delicious. Fatty, creamy goodness. As a native New Englander, I grew up in Land of Super-Premium-Home-Made ice cream. Dorman's lives up to my expectations--especially the raspberry chip. Dorman's is in a tiny little shack on the side of Route 1. I've only been a few times, but there is always a line. They clearly pump their profits back into the ice cream, and not the building. Down East Sundae Shake: I had three in seven days and still yearn for more. I have been eating Dorman's for four years now (while visiting the Mr.'s family in the summer), and this was the year I fell in love with it. It had to do with the Down East Sundae Shake. This is a "small thick shake with a junior sundae on top", which translated means "an enormous amount of delicious ice cream topped with sundae toppings that you need a straw and a spoon to eat". Dorman's is cheap for the quantity given, and you can taste that it's homemade. I only get the Grapenut, which I highly recommend with hot fudge. It's better than Momofuku cereal milk soft serve. I personally prefer Dorman's shakes to scoops, but am not sure why. As my husband says, "It isn't summer until you've been to Dorman's." read more

Quaint, Local, Delicious There's only one little table to sit at, out behind, under a tree - which is good, it's much more fun to stand around exchanging smiles with folks and chatting as you enjoy your ice cream. If you really want to sit down, hop in your car, take a right and drive for a few minutes, North on RT 1, and, instead of taking the left down main street in town, just drive straight and go to the public pier in Rockland to enjoy their large portions of delicious ice cream as you look out on the harbor. read more

I told the worker (same one I placed the order with) that I had ordered two different flavors. She said we can't put two different flavors on one cone. I said well you didn't mention that when I placed the order. She looked at me like she could not have cared less. So I asked to change to just one scoop then. She took it back and someone else brought my one scoop cone which was still on a cake cone btw. So I was out $1.50 (one scoop vs two plus no sugar cone) which no one offered to refund me.
