Fun times practicing 8-ball at Dooly's. They also have a snooker table.

The staff is very friendly, the food is great (just finger food) and the pool isn't overly expensive. They also have a virtual golf course where you can bring your own clubs and shoot balls as if you were on a real golf course. It is quite expensive, but it's a great alternative when it's raining outside or during the winter and you having a craving for golf! We played pool for 2 hours and had 2 beer and it was less than $60.00.

The price was very reasonable for the 2 hours and in retrospect, I should have tipped much better than I had. When we arrived 15 minutes early and the previous patrons were still in their game, the bartender was very friendly, clearly wanted to be helpful and ensure we had a positive experience. It was nice to have plenty of room and a couch/sitting area behind the 3 game simulators, while we waited, stretched and warmed up. Once we were ready to begin, being a bit rusty on how to set our game settings, the bartender was helpful, gave explanations with out being too much or assumptive. Seeing that he might have been the only staff on hand for the entire facility, I was impressed with how well he took care of everyone and seemed very positive. Many people must be regulars as they knew him by name and made sure to acknowledge him before leaving. We had a few drinks. The bottled Coors Light was satisfactory . The Chocolate Monkey and Grasshopper I ordered were mixed well and enjoyed. They disappeared quickly... I did find that the furniture was mostly dated - typical of most billiard rooms. The course selection was pretty good. We played Banff Springs Overall, we had a good time and would go back again - maybe with a couple of friends for a round at a warm southern golf course.

Charlie's is a pretty chill place to go hang out and have a few beers…read more The crowd can be a little rough around the edges but I guess the university throngs have pretty much pushed the average drinking man out of every other bar in Halifax. Pool tables are a nice addition... I wasn't really sure what the $2 cover was going towards besides upkeep? A grungy/funky spot in the North End that's for sure!

This is not a tourist bar, unless you are a linoleum architecture tourist, or a $2.75 tequila shot…read moretourist, or a tourist of watching tight knit groups of locals sit around in circular formation. Charlie's is where you go when you want to go to Cheers. (Not the Cheers on Grafton St., the Cheers on TV according to your 6 y/o mind, which is really just the the theme song, fuzzy visuals, and conflating real life people with Cliff and/or Rhea Pearlman.) In short, it's where you go when you come home nostalgic and want to see all your old friends, enthusiastically buy each other drinks like it's a genuine gift, dance to one of those weird new electric blue jukeboxes, shout and pontificate around a pool table, and generally have a back slappin, squeezey hugging, chortling little time. The decor is like any affordable house, only the door has a key code and a woman sits at a table with a guest book when you come in. This does not make you feel cool, but it does make you feel like life is funny. The bartender is so used to over-friendly drunk patrons that nothing can melt him. I imagine that deep in his core is something more kind than anything I have ever known, but it is too precious to be shared. The last time I came here, someone apologized for asking me to dance when I turned him down. Apologized. For my rejecting him. A dark little mineshaft to the salt of the earth this place is, lemme tell ya.

Fortunately there was power at the retail area of Larry Uteck and after braving a mad crush at Timmies for my morning fix, it was time to find somewhere to eat. A couple of the restaurants in the area hadn't opened, but Patrons was showing signs of life, so in I popped. It's a bit of an oddity. To the right of the door are a couple of high tech' golf simulators. To the left are two distinct areas, the first being a kind of lounge set-up, furnished with comfy chairs and sofas. The second is the main bar/restaurant area. Not surprisingly is was pretty busy and all the tables were taken, so I pulled up at the bar. The barman and single waitress were being rushed off their feet and the kitchen appeared to be way behind on orders, all thanks to the power cut. A second waitress who lived locally was called in at short notice and together, the three of them performed heroically. The drinks choices are fine, with some coverage of the local craft scene, including a couple of the better ciders and the menu is standard pub fare. I went for the poutine. A mass of fries, slightly less than optimum portion of curds and a generous topping of smoked meat. The gravy was just the right temperature to melt the curds and seasoning was good. I was thoroughly stuffed by the end. Not cheap at around $13, but not too bad for Halifax. The main bar is a bit of a barn and I'm not sure it would make for a cozy local pub, but for beer and tucker you could do far worse.

The good: Pool tables are in excellent condition. The prices are reasonable for playing pool. The bad: Drink prices are high, especially considering the location. Food prices aren't cheap either, but not as contrasting. Some servers are slow and seem disillusioned. I'm sure the job isn't Disneyland but as someone who worked worse jobs to pay my way through University, any job that requires customer service, well, requires customer service! One server was insanely rude to my friend. He complained as we left and asked to speak to the manager. He was told the manager wasn't in. When asked when he would be, the server said she wasn't sure. My friend came back two days later and asked to see the manager. A different, more polite server said the manager was on vacation. Alright then. The ugly: Two years ago the little strip mall adjacent to Bedford Place Mall was fine. Now, residents in the area, mainly seniors, get to enjoy interesting looking patrons/staff smoking and cursing outside. Incredulously, they start a bit after noon. Like I said in my Bubba Ray's review, it's astonishing, as someone who works 40-60 hours a week at a good job but only after working my butt off studying and moreover, paying my way through school by working, that people can afford to drink pricey booze and smoke 22 dollar a pack cigarettes on a Tuesday afternoon. I saw an elderly person ask a young man with a cigarette and a neck tattoo to not smoke in front of public establishment. His response was to give the lady a terrifying look and to flick with cigarette about 20 feet (which was in a weird way, impressive. I'm sure he has had lots of experience to develop such a skill). I'm not sure if by design, but the cigarette went so far it hit some poor person's car. He strutted back into Dooly's, without saying a word. The look he gave on the other hand, probably made that lady resent opening her mouth. This outraged me, but considering my disdain for conflict, I asked my brother, an officer in the armed forces to speak with the manager. He said he wouldn't complain since he himself hadn't seen the incident, but did offer to go down and play some pool and have a beer and "observe." This time we went around 8pm on a Friday. Many people went out and smoked right outside the building, violating smoking by-laws which require smokers to a) smoke 5m away from an entrance and b) not to litter. Moreover, people were using those vaping things in the bar. Neither of us are big fans of inhaling nicotine. At this point, we asked to speak to a manager and were told the manager would be in on Monday. Manager's apparently don't work too much. As we left, we saw a man, who appeared quite intoxicated, get into his car and drive away recklessly, narrowly missing a parked car. There were about a dozen people outside in the cold, smoking away, throwing/flicking their butts away randomly. Quite the scene. We called non-emergency police services and after voicing our complaint, were told that police had been "around" and noticed no problems. An officer called us and as I tried to explain people were drinking and driving, was told, facetiously, "thank you" and hung up on. That is another matter I'm handling through different avenues. If HRM would like to generate funds quickly, put a competent police officer in an unmarked car in the parking lot of Dooly's and Bubba Ray's and I'm sure he/she could write 10-20k a week in littering, smoking violations and DUI tickets a week and that is a light estimate. Pretty heinous that our tax dollars pay the salaries of the police, yet we are hung up on for complaining (or trying to) about unruly people, flicking cigarettes around, making other establishments less appealing and driving around drunk. In the words of the officer we spoke with, "We have a great relationship with them (the aforementioned establishments)." I'm not sure if he meant his girlfriend worked there but that's a farcical statement. This situation seems inevitable to escalate, and must be indirectly lowering the property value of all the property in the surrounding area. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/attempted-murder-charge-in-bedford-strip-mall-stabbing-1.2100689
