(Tookout 06/18/23 SU @ 3:30pm): Donuts - and apple fritters - were always delightful!
After celebrating MacLeod Ale Brewing Co.'s 9th anniversary, I finally decided to try nearby Donuts & Delites to feed an urge. I've driven by this donut shop countless times as it was between two rental properties I managed for my family. How did this first experience go, and did they have all of my favorites!?
PURCHASE
16floz Taro Smoothie + Boba ($5.75 + $0.75): A meal in itself, the taro flavor was subtle and a tad on the powdery side with a light tinge of purple, the consistency was a good thickness that flowed smoothly, while the boba was plentiful and perfectly chewy but not gooey, and it was all topped with a dollop of fluffy whipped cream. Aside from the faint taste, this was a reasonable deal https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=qlgv-yZDvmOhkWMIQISmBw&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw.
THE "APPLE FRITTER IS TAKING OVER THE WORLD TOUR" CONTINUED...
Apple Fritter ($2.50): Not that I was an apple fritter snob - eff it...yes I was! - but there was a certain way I liked mine. 1st, the price was comparable to the going rate (how I longed for fritters less than $2.00). 2nd, it was round shaped, the thickness and density was exactly what I liked, and more the size of my hand rather than my face (an ode to the great Goldstar Donuts in Van Nuys). 3rd, there was a noticeable amount of apple bits. 4th, the overall dark brown color was nice with several burnt ends (I loved it burnt), and the medium glaze was just enough and didn't make for a messy cracking effect. There were several crunchy odd crannies, corners, and nooks which I liked to break off into small little morsels. 5th, it was still fresh based on its temperature and early-afternoon with some hints of oil pockets and gooey apple juices that leaked into your mouth and dripped down your throat. Overall, it had exceptionally good value - 4.5 STARS https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=nnpV0C45XYfdBQqKXidorQ&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw.
Glazed Buttermilk Bar ($1.75): A short and stout heavy-glazed creamy bar of goodness I had for breakfast a couple days later, twenty-five seconds in the microwave softened it up as it easily fell apart while it slightly burned my mouth https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=6sl11l8VFGiKOfGt21GwtA&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw.
Rainbow Sprinkles Chocolate Frosting Cake Donut ($1.50): A sweet treat that always put a smile on my face, I enjoyed this a few days later, seemingly still fresh, thick, and sugary goodness https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=JNutQSHxA7PYuC6Fx0dVkQ&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw.
SERVICE
Kindly greeted by a friendly woman, she quickly took my order after she finished with an earlier customer, took time to make my drink, and less than ten minutes later my entire order was ready. All was good with no complaints - thank you!
PARKING (FREE)
Located within a medium-sized strip mall that contained an insurance company and a handful of other businesses, there was decent onsite parking albeit a bit tight which I found a spot directly out front. Otherwise, there appeared to be sufficient parking along the main drag of Victory Blvd. - 'nuff said.
ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE
A deceptively long shop with multiple donut display cases, Lotto & Scratchers, easily legible drink https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=_FIGeHdgSxO8rNxe9X6tjQ&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw and food https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=phfa15W16srY4s-YRvMzSg&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw menus/prices boards, a wall-sized menu https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=jEhn2uRUFZriFyI6dBLJfw&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw, a few tables and chairs to enjoy your food onsite, and a ton of visuals that covered the entire inside https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=vL8Vh4DD2ENXV59_3OLSXw&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw. Decent amounts of natural lighting came through the semi-covered large glass windows and doors while soul-sucking fluorescent electric ceiling lights covered the rest. I didn't notice any TVs nor background music. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=v8iWyZTHl4c4FU4CxS4E0A&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw
ATTIRE
Totally casual, so I would normally be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops.
OVERALL
Donuts & Delites was "de-lovely" and would consider a return visit. Everything tasted generally fine, the prices were very comparable, and the service was quick and easy. They also sold coffee/drinks/juices/tea, sandwiches, various snacks, and more! Plus, it was always a pleasure to support a mom & pop small business. I found very good value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experience was around $12.00 BEFORE any discounts and/or tip). And, they accepted my credit card of choice... AMEX! 4.0 STARS read more
