Don has been my barber for over a decade. He is the best in the business and I would not dare visit anyone else, no matter the price. And based on the resounding majority of the reviews here, I am not alone in my unanimous praise of Don's Cutting Edge. Yelp is a funny place and you need to learn how to separate the truth from the pathetic haters. For instance, I don't know who this "Gene O" guy is... but seems like a lame attempt at Yelp sabotage to me. He must be working at the barber shop down the street. Just imagine being poor "Gene O" - the one sad sack amongst a sea of delighted customers high-fiving each other at the awesome haircut party. Yikes... Because honestly, what is there not to like? You like the best? Go to Don's and get the best and at a very reasonable price! Your hair will be cut by either Don or his outstanding colleague Mauricio. Both are masters of their craft. Disappointing. Went in today for a haircut and beard clean up. Picked this place because of good reviews. Started out ok, people there were friendly enough. However the lady who was assigned to me did not give a great haircut, and a BAD shave. Should have just done the shave myself. My neck is bleeding from her shaving my beard against the grain with the electric razor and had a very hard time leveling it out until it was higher up than I wanted. Doesn't look good for my date today. Told her I didn't want the hair on top touched but she used trimming scissors anyway. Not very happy with the look and there are more than a few hairs out of place. If I come back, I'll ask specifically for Don. He seems to do a much better job. read more

Moved back to oc Jan 2016, and we make time to drive to Santa Monica to see Mauricio. He is absolutely the best and he's always on time, and there's no bs. Sorry Mauricio, my husband had to get an emergency hair cut in Irvine and it's the most terrible haircut with the most pretentious people, with loud obnoxious music, and they're always running 2 hrs behind, minimum. We made this mistake twice, horrible haircut. We always make an effort to drive to Mauricio every 3 weeks. For me, I'm low maintenance, and get my hair cut twice a year and I only trust Mauricio with my cut and color. He did my ombre, a line, solid color dye, and my bangs and trim. I trust him 200%. I've been coming to Don's for years now. I originally had my hair cut by Don. Over the years, he's referred me to his counterpart, Mauricio, when he's busy. I can be extremely hesitant to trust someone new with my hair; however, Don and Mauricio do an excellent job of cutting hair and providing stellar customer service. I love that they use straight razors and warm shaving cream to clean my neck up and send me out feeling fresh and ready to conquer the world. I love Don and Mauricio's work and I view them both as equals. I appreciate that I have the flexibility to see Mauricio when Don is busy with full confidence he's going to send me out the door looking my very best every time. Probably the best haircut I've had in years. I totally stumbled by this place by accident. Needing a haircut pretty badly, (was just gonna pop in at the shop that cut my hair last time) walked in and got sat right away. That's when I figured out that this place is couple blocks away and it was to late. But that's ok because I got a really good haircut by a barber who knows what he's doing. Mauricio hooked it up!! I have wavy to curly hair and it's thinning a bit. Well you can barely tell now, cuz Mauricio took the TIME to cut in different ways (directions) and thin out the areas that are a little thicker to even it out. This is a review for my boyfriend. The first time we went there without an appointment after looking at yelp reviews and to his dismay, Don was all booked for the rest of the day so my boyfriend decided to come another day. However, as it is a little out of the way, he decided to get his hair done at a local neighborhood barber and they spent 40 minutes cutting his hair and it looked like they only cut his sides. The top looked completely uncut and he looked liek he had a fauxhawk. My boyfriend hated his haircut and decided to go to Don's the next day with an appointment. Don was such a nice fella and he recognized my boyfriend as having gotten a haircut since he last tried to get one here. He made wonderful conversations and asked my boyfriend exactly what he wanted and gave him that. I think this is one of the best haircuts he's had in a while. He did it quickly and all in all, We got in and out of there in half an hour including a quick hair rinse and a massage that left my boyfriend not feeling strained in the neck as he usually feels. That's 36 years of experience for you. Total came out to $25. I dont think there's a 5 dollar off Wednesdays anymore though. He was going to give him tip too but Don refused the tip because he felt bad that my boyfriend had to get two haircuts within the week. What a great guy : ) Will definitely come here again! My first time here and the experience was phenomenal. And Scott really nailed the cut. I made an appointment Saturday morning for 2pm that day, and when I showed up he offered me some coffee. Now I've been rockin the same 'do for a few years, so I was looking for something a bit fresher and something that worked better with my hair. Scott understood and delivered. Came out to $30 + tip. A bit more expensive than Floyds 99 down the street, but well worth it as Floyds can be a crapshoot. I'm definitely going back. PRO TIP: Do make an appointment, and do it early. Needed a haircut on the Westside. This place is slightly more expensive than my usual guy in Torrance but had a convenience factor so it was worth the $25. When I walked in I was greeted by Don and Tracy. The shop was clean and they offered me coffee or water when I walked in which was a nice touch. Tracy was very sweet and had a great attention to detail. She took good care with my side burns and the front hairs that can be a bit difficult. She also washed my hair afterwards. This place was worth every penny, and I'll be getting a haircut here in the future instead of my usual guy. They are cash only so make sure to hit the ATM first. read more

Most of these reviews are about Scott, so I'm going to add a little variety and write a review about a fictitious hair stylist here with a different name. How about Paul? Yeah. That's his name. But to be clear, Paul is based on Scott. And not like, partially based on him or inspired by him or there is a story that resembles something that once happened to Scott. Nah. This is 100% based on Scott. But we'll call him Paul. Just to change it up a bit. Monotony can be a very tough thing at this time of year. So here we go. Paul cut my hair this past Tuesday and I feel like I am pretty cool now. I never was cool before. Okay, that's not true. I've been cool a few times in my life but I somehow find a way to lose that coolness. Not this time. Paul has kept me feeling cool for at least five straight days now. He's pretty laid back but not so laid back that he might accidentally cut off your ear or something like that. He listens and he recommends and he goes a good job doing what he does. Cool neck tattoo. Might be the same as Ryan Gosling's tattoo in The Place Beyond the Pines. I just looked it up and I was very far from accurate. My bad. Anyway, go to Don's and ask for Paul. And when they tell you that there's no Paul who works there, just remember that you read this entire Yelp review and you will never, ever get the past two minutes of your life back. I was tired of the same cheap buzz cut I had been getting for years, I was in search for something new. I went searching on 'the Yelp' for a Santa Monica shop that was not quite barber shop, not quite high-end salon. Don's Cutting Edge was just what I needed for my transitional period. I told Michael G. my woes about my hairstyle history. He seemed to understand where I was coming from, and had a good idea of what he thought my new direction should be. I really didn't know what I wanted, so I was glad he had something in mind. Should I have trusted someone I have never been to before with free reign of my hair? Probably not, but I'm glad I did. Not only did he execute a great cut, he let me know what it was that he had done and how to communicate it effectively. That was really crucial, because I probably wouldn't have been able to put into words how to get this cut again. It wasn't until I got back into my car to drive back to work from my lunch break that I checked my awesome new cut in the rear view mirror. I failed to notice the considerable amount of hair residue on my face, ears, and white shirt while I was still in the chair. While he did brush off my face after the cut, it might have been nice if he had used a damp terry cloth to remove some of that or even a quick rinse. I'm not sure if that's just not the standard with a $25 +tip cut in Santa Monica. I know it's not the standard with a $8 +tip in the South Bay, but I guess I expected a little bit more when I'm paying that much more. read more

The last time I got my hair cut I went to Rudy's. Needless to say my experience was equivalent to that of Vince Vaughn in wedding crashers after he's awaken by Rachel McAdam's brother in the movie. I missed a 10 am appointment because my baby was ill and called in the next time the shop was open. Scott who usually is a pretty cool guy says "it does me no good that you called two days later". This guy really does think his time is more valuable than his customers and needs a reality check that the only reason he has a job is because of his customers. I apologized for missing the appointment but having being spoken to rudely and then asked to pay for a missed appointment is appalling and exactly why I'll be taking my business somewhere else. read more

Just got my hair cut here this morning and I must say that this is the place to go if you're in Santa Monica. All of the staff are skilled in their craft but today I have to talk about Mauricio. The cut went smooth and quick, he defiantly knows what he's doing. Very efficient especially since I normally don't have a lot of time. For 10 years straight I've done my own hair - #1 on the clippers - GO! Last October I decided to stop cutting my hair. After 6 months, I decided I didn't want to shave it off but get it cleaned up and styled a bit. I freaked out! After doing some research and finding Don's on Yelp, I walked in as nervous as if I were going to the dentist. Leslie had about 15 minutes free so she sat me down and whipped out a great cut and style AND made me feel totally comfortable and welcome. First time cut at Don's was a good experience. Don is a good man and likes meeting customers. Leslie is a wonderful gal and conversational. She also knows a thing or two about hair as she immediately knew what kind of cut I liked (just scissors). The cut was fast and came out great as I was complimented on it later that week. What more could you ask for in a cut? Oh yeah, price... Fan-freakin-tastic! Normally its $25 (no big deal) but Wednesdays its discounted to $20. SCORE! I was a starving UCLA kid and cut my own faux hawk for the longest time, but needed something a little more professional looking for interviews. Went in on a Saturday afternoon and the place was actually pretty empty, probably because it was labor day weekend, but Leslie did a great job on my head. Told her i needed something that I could dress up to look professional and mess up for a night out and that's exactly what I got. Even my hat hair looks pretty good now haha. The only reason I took a star off was because of the price point. I like to keep my hair cropped pretty close and $25+tip is just a little steep for me. read more

WOW. OK. I finally have a place to get my hair cut in Santa Monica that does not reach for the clippers right away and make me look like a marine! 1st IMPRESSION: Its a nice old barbershop, i walked in off the street and i was greeted quickly and kindly, it was my first time there so i signed up with Scott for an hour from then to come back and get shaped up. A gentleman offered me a coffee, water or Jack Daniels, all nice options and a nice little touch. STYLIST: Scott- Awesome Job! maybe my favorite haircut iv ever got, and i used to date a hair stylist. My hair was long but i needed an all scissors cut just to thin it up and make me presentable, he totally got it and said he did it all the time and called it the "non haircut". I don't like to walk out and look like i got a cut and i like the unkempt-ness of my hair a bit. Cut came out perfect, styles easy, looks good and still have the same look i was going for. had a good knowledge of hair types, some product and what people want. Nice guy, personable and friendly. I started coming to Scott about a year ago after moving to the area and finding Don's here on yelp. Now I really won't go anywhere else. Scott is a great hair stylist. This guy listens to what you want and knows what works best for your hair/face. And he's CONSISTENT. I get a cut every 6-8 weeks and he gets it right every time. That kind of trust is hard to find in a stylist or barber. Plus the vibe of the shop is mellow and Scott's super entertaining to talk with while he's trimming you up. Every time I frequent Don'e Cutting Edge for a hair cut I am welcomed like an old friend, am engaged in entertaining conversation, and most importantly get the exact hair cut I am looking for. Got my hair cut here recently. I'm one of those guys who has no idea what they want done with their hair. Mike understood and gave me my best haircut ever. Definitely will be coming back here. Great conversation, great sense of humor. The kind of guy you want to be friends with immediately. He even recommended a nice Mexican place by my house! I payed twice as much as I used to pay back home in Alabama ($30, $5 tip), but it was worth every penny. Mike is a great guy and I totally recommend him if you visit! Note that despite some reviewers stating that this place does not take cards, that is (as of now at least) untrue. I was asked if I wanted to pay with cash or charge, with a $2 extra fee for using a card. I paid with cash and Mike said they prefer cash. Given this information I suggest that you bring cash, but if you're in a pinch you should be able to use a card. read more

Incredibly professional, you can really tell he knows what he's doing, I've had some pretty scary experiences before finally finding Don's. I've been coming here for over a year now since I moved to Santa Monica and I have to say that Scott is the man. Just to give some background, I have thick straight Asian hair and all my life I've been going to barbers and salons where people just don't get it (Asian hair that is). I've been trying to change my hairstyle for years now but despite telling/showing my hairstylist exactly what I wanted, the end product would inevitably be the same... short fade on the sides and somehow spiked up top. I've lived in San Diego, San Francisco/Oakland, and even New York City and no one has been able to give me the cut I want. The top Salons in NYC (100+ for haircuts) did ok with the texturing and style up top but basically had no knowledge when it came to blending the side with clippers. Other barbers had the clipper cut down to a T but had no idea what they were doing up top. I'm happy to say that after working with Scott through multiple cuts I've finally found someone who really understands Asian hair. 5 stars for the conversations, great attitude, easy scheduling and excellent cuts. I'm a longtime lurker on yelp but decided to post a review to let everyone know how satisfied I am with my cuts. I can't speak for the other hairstylists in terms of the cuts they provide but I'm sure they are just as great. read more

Mauricio was awesome. Super nice guy, and an even better barber. Close attention to his lines, great with the clippers and shears. I went to him for the first time today and I will be making the trek from Marina del Rey every few weeks to sit back in his chair. The shop is a no-nonsense, hole-in-the-wall barbershop; just the way they should be. No trying to get you to buy product, or trying to get you out the door as quickly as possible. Pro-tip: It's not technically cash only, they use Square on their phones, BUT I know Square users pay a sizable processing fee and I felt bad for making him swipe mine so try and bring cash if you can. read more

Fantastic barber shop! Brenda, Don, and Mauricio are all especially great. Brenda is my go-to hairdresser. I've gone to her for the past three years and I can always rely on her for a high-quality, personalized, and speedy cut. She used to work at a shop closer to me, but I'm willing to make the trip to this location to see her! She's also very friendly and a good conversationalist. I've never gotten haircuts from Don or Mauricio, but I've seen them both around the shop. They're both very warm and welcoming, and are often willing to join in on the conversation when they're not busy with their own clients. The shop itself is in a great location. The outside is pretty low-profile, but there's plenty of free parking behind and next-to the shop, food spots nearby, and a fantastic hobby shop next door (fun place to peruse before an appointment!). read more
