I have known Donna Nikander for 25 years now and have found her to be extremely knowledgeable in the field of medicine particularly with the mind/body connection. She is absolutely brilliant and through my several moves (10) around the country I have never found anyone who can tune into an individuals needs as clearly as she does. I first went to Dr. Nikander earlier this year to get a better handle on my health. She was very thorough in my first interview with her and for those that said she doesn't have the best bedside manner, it's because she's a bit quirky and wants to focus on the best care for you and asks a lot of questions. It's best you let her ask questions then you can ask questions when she's done. She recommended a test to check how my liver was functioning and was spot on with her recommendation of a few supplements. I started feeling better after that. She's a super smart lady and appreciates people who take an interest in their health and also take time to take notes and keep health journals. My second visit with her went better and her bedside manner improved but I also realized it's best to prepare ahead of time then ask your questions when she's done with the interview. Communication is key to getting good care. My third visit was even better with her and on before my next visit, I'll request that she either email me or print off my lab results so I can have in front of me while she explains it all. She isn't great about responding to emails so I'd make a list and ask in person and don't send an email. read more

My wife and I have been seeing Donna for almost 2 years. I'm pretty surprised by all of the negative reviews - we have had a very good experience. We both love her use of Genomind to diagnose which prescriptions would be most likely to succeed. And her knowledge of how every system works together (body, hormones, brain, etc) always seems to be more intuitive and make more sense than most other doctors I've worked with. She was so perfect for my wife suffering from 3 years of postpartum psychosis. Sure, she's a human, and sometimes scheduling isn't excellent - we've bumped into other patients who went long before us and we had to wait, and others experienced the same when we went long. And of course, you have to show up prepared to ANY doctor - otherwise you're wasting your time and money. I find that I have to have specific questions and examples ready, but that only increases my ability to articulate what's going on, rather than rambling and hoping to figure it out as I go. Overall, I think that hanging in there with her is well worth it. She's the only doctor I've ever trusted. read more

So this is a first. You know the first thing you do when you go see a doctor... You complete the HIPPA form. The confidentiality agreement that informs you that no personal info between you in the doctor/nurse will be discussed with other individuals let alone other patients. I've never had an issue with this with any other medical professional in my life. But Nurse Nikander took upon herself to discuss my personal information with an outside party. The discussion had ultimately influenced a situation that didn't even involve me... THE PATIENT! SO I feel violated of my privacy and have ultimately lost respect for this practice. What a joke. I thought Nurse Nikander was decent before this... I mean she didn't offer much advice or really seem to care about anything I talked about but I've had worse. But when you seek medical help for an issue and finally break grounds with a medication only to have it discontinued because of an outside conversation not involving "yourself" just flat out pissed you off. It violates any comfort of privacy you felt you had with this individual. Maybe it was neglicence on her part but as a medical professional licensed and with access to my personal info.. She kind of crossed a boundary. Who prescribes you a 90 supply of medication, let's your body become accustomed to it and then takes you off because of an illegal conversation with an outside individual. Who is also a patient. I'm pretty easy going but when it comes to getting worked over like that, u bet I'm not gonna take it. So ya. Unprofessional. Not someone you can count on. read more

However, this woman was incredibly rude, judgmental, and made me feel very uncomfortable and violated. I would recommend you go anywhere else--she is not someone to trust with your health. read more

I can't review Donna because she simply never showed up to my appointment. My appointment was at 2 pm and neither her nor her assistant contacted me to tell me she was out of town. I had to make special arrangements to arrive at her office as I am in a lot of pain, only to be told that she simply didn't come in that day. Incredibly unprofessional. This morning I received an email from her saying "I must not have received her email explaining she was out of town." BS. When I arrived at my appointment the secretary told me she missed her 8:30 and 1:00pm apts as well. I suspect no email was sent. She is flaky and unapologetic. read more

I was reading reviews for Donna Nikander because I wondered if anyone else felt like I did and yes, many do. I saw her when she worked for a medical practice before she went on her own. Instead of taking a seat and talking to me eye to eye like many physicians do, she stood above me and at a distance. It felt intentional to be looking down at me in a superior manner which correlated to how she treated me. She did not like when I questioned her, as if I was challenging her and she was defensive. I was simply asking questions about my health and wanting clarification of what she said, which we as patients have every right to do. She was rude, not very caring, aloof and really did not seem to care. She is too impatient to be working with humans. She is smart, but should be working from a computer. I am not easily intimidated and I was not. I felt disprected. There are many other health providers to choose from who are also very educated, do yourself a favor and save your time and money. read more

I wholeheartedly agree with the other reviewer. If I could give negative stars, I would. I found Donna to be quite rude, dismissive, and she had a distinct air of judgment and dishonesty. Forthrightness in communication is hugely important to me especially when it comes to my health and there is no way I would choose a provider who gives anything less. read more

I too completely agree with the other two reviews. She does not deserve a one star rating and that should tell you/warn you that you will not only save yourself the time and money but more importantly not put you health in jeopardy. As a health care professional myself I found her to be less than professional and knowledgeable in her field. A number of times when i questioned her knowing myself ( I am an RN), that her information was incorrect she corrected herself after referring to her computer notes which she refers to constantly with very little eye contact, with no apologies what so ever. I remember as a nurse in the hospital we use to refer to the Dr.'s with this sort of attitude as having, "no bed side manner." Well.... she had ZERO! She was rude and insulting when I attempted to write notes to myself on her reviews of my lab results, saying I must not understand well enough to just listen and not ask questions. I also found her extremely judgmental and insulting that I wasn't understanding her when I did ask a question. When I asked for a copy of my lab work to look at (saying I was more visual and the copies would be helpful while she was reviewing them) she begrudgingly acted very put upon saying I was wasting time as she proceeded to make copies. She also said that she had already sent me copies to my email address which she hadn't, I had to ask her three times via email and phone calls to please send my records so I could share them with my California Dr.'s. which she finally did. She repeatedly stated that this was going to take a lot of time because of the complexity of my case and the tests, and that she would need to make additional apts. I went in to see her just to get refills on my Cali Rx's?????? how complex can that be????? , After the third time it was clear that she was milking the time for additional apts. at Medicare's expense. After referring back to my two reputable MD's in Calif (knowing them both for 6-7yrs.) I was told she misdiagnosed and the excessive lab testing she had ordered was not helpful or reliable. I've been seeing Dr. Nikander since April 2016. I've read the other reviews and I do agree that being prepared for an appointment is very important to her. She doesn't really tolerate rambling or stories; she just wants facts. I appreciate that she wants to look at scientifically sound evidence such as blood tests and DNA tests. (I saw a traditional naturopath in Denver for two years who used muscle testing which I've heard from a few naturopaths and natural health practitioners that they do not trust or rely on muscle testing.) I appreciate that she has never jumped to a conclusion; she really looks at all of the evidence. She is very knowledgeable about the brain and explains things in a way that I've been able to understand. I think it's been so nice to finally get some answers and real help. That's how I've felt--like I'm finally getting some real help from someone who cares. My little girl has had to come to appointments with me and Donna was very accommodating and was never annoyed that we were interrupted often. I do agree that she is not the best with e-mail communication and you can't just call her office to speak with her directly. That is quite bothersome. That would be my biggest complaint. I think being able to speak directly with your practitioner is important. Because she's not timely with communication I've had to wait a few days for her to call in a refill. I think giving her a heads up in advance is something I'll do in the future. I definitely need to pay more attention to my medicine bottles to see the number of refills left. For those who gave negative reviews I can understand where they're coming from. But I agree that it takes time to develop a working relationship with her and it's worth it to push through. She and my GP In Boulder are really the best practitioners I've had. As far as wait time she's one of the shortest I've had. Even if it's twenty minutes that's far better than an hour like some practitioners. She might be a bit absentminded about printing out test results, but again I think giving her a heads up goes a long way. All in all I think she's a good one and worth the wait. read more
