I went in with a potential-emergency situation at 4pm. While I was sitting there freaking out, not only did I get to listen to the entire office laughing about how Dr. McCormack was going to "get out of there last", he apparently was going to do his best to change that and get the appointment over with fast. No questions, not even if I'd had any trauma to my head, and when I tried to bring such incidents up he dismissed my effort. Not only did he make me feel like he couldn't be bothered with my troubleshooting and conerns, but he only checked the damaged eye. He didn't even take a simple look to see if the other one was effected or was healthy. And then I got billed for a full exam!! I left there not confident in his advice and went for a second opinion. I had a Very Poor experience with this "doctor" which sadly has been experienced by many others. He actually got things "wrong" with my exam that I did not find out about until my new glasses came back. I could not see with them and it took some effort to find out the cause. It was His mistake with the wrong prescription (not the new eye glasses). I went back and prescription was mostly corrected but with No Apology and with a new bill. I saw Dr McCormack several times during the time I lived in Colorado to treat a recurring case of Iritis. One of the things I liked about him was that he coordinated my treatment with my other specialist and discussed my treatment with that other doctor to find the best way to best treat the Iritis. Worst doctor we've experienced. Does not convey the information you would expect from a supposed trained professional in the field. My wife had three (3) visits with this guy, and every time he treated it like a guessing game. Each visit was very brief (a few minutes) and very expensive, with the last one being nearly $200 out of pocket excluding any medications. The worst part is that the visits were worthless in terms of helping the problem (something causing a red eye, unfortunately our ~$500 spent out of pocket on this terrible doctor can't tell you more than that). Bottom line, if you want a real professional that will give you answers and proper service in exchange for your money, then avoid Dr. Donald McCormack. This guy is by far the worst Dr. that I have ever visited. I was billed nearly $200.00 for a less than five minute visit. No exam of any kind was taken. With all of the complaints I'm surprised that The Boulder medical center has not kicked him out. He would probably have trouble becoming a plumber or bartender. If anyone gives him a good star it would probably be one of his family members. I told my insurance company to check this guy out because I think he is a fraud. He probably does not have many patients so he gets all of the money he can from all of the rest of us. I wont be going to the Boulder Medical Center again for any service until they dump this guy. read more

Dr. McCormack is an Opthamologist, not an Optometrist, which for me, meant that my annual exam would be covered by my insurance with a co-pay of only $50. I made an appointment, and spent roughly FOUR minutes with him. He did the normal 1...or 2..... exam, said my current glasses prescription was fine, and passed me off to someone else to do my contact lens fitting. (The whole reason I went for an exam was to get a new contact lens brand) Before the new person started, she told me she charges $46 for the contact fitting and prescription. I said "wait, a normally $350 exam doesn't include that?" and she told me I had to pay separately because she's in a different department. A couple weeks later, I got a bill from BMC for an ADDITIONAL $50! It was labled "Contact prescrip/ sub", which I thought I had already paid for. The billing person that I talked to said I had to pay again because the doctor looked at the contacts in my eyes EVEN though I had to pay separately for the prescription and ACTUAL fitting. It is extremely frustrating. JUST PAY FOR A NORMAL OPTOMETRIST AND GET MORE PERSONALIZED CARE, AND AVOID GETTING NICKLE AND DIMED BY BOULDER MEDICAL CENTER. I thought doctors existed to help people, not to gouge wallets for services they didn't even provide. Frustrating. read more

McCormack charges 250 dollars for a ten minute exam, that in my case turned out far les accurate than a commercial optometrist. I now have to stay within one foot of my computer to use my computer glasses. He takes a co-pay as you go in, then sends you an outrageous bill after you thought you were done with the co-pay. read more

Chose to go to an eye doctor, instead of my usual eyeglass appt, for dry and bloodshot eyes. Did not need a new eyeglass or contact prescription. I was told that I had to get the eyeglass and contact prescription exam too. Ok, what-ever, as long as I can see a doctor about the dry eye. I brought the over-the-counter drops I had been using. The "doctor" did the same exam that I get from the eyeglass store, nothing more. And again,I didn't need the eyeglass or contact prescription. Told me to keep using the drops I was already using. Then, I received a bill for $301 ($251 for eyeglass exam and 50 for contact exam).- for what my eyeglass store usually charges me less than $100 for. And for what I didn't need. I now owe $301 for the doctor to tell me to keep using the drops I had already been using. I also have a glasses and contact prescription that I didn't want, and don't need. I am glad to see the other postings here and know that it wasn't just me. read more

I've been having a little more trouble reading things from far away, so I came in to have my eyes checked. On the downside, I need glasses (shocker, I know). On the upside, Dr. McCormack spent a lot of time getting my prescription right and answering all of my questions about astigmatism, glasses vs. contacts, eye-strain from computers, etc. I'd definitely recommend him. read more

If you need an ophthalmologist in Boulder, I *highly* recommend Dr. Donald McCormack! In fact, he will *save* your eyesight - at least he did mine. Here's my story: I went to a different eye doctor in a different part of town, because I had flashes and floaters in one of my eyes. He correctly diagnosed a PVD (posterior vitreous detachment) and while in and of itself PVDs are common in my age group, he told me to call if I had either lots of flashes or "a veil coming over that eye," as that could be a sign of my retina detaching and that is very serious - serious enough that if it happened on the weekend I was to go directly to the emergency room. On Friday I woke up and had a symptom that I *thought* could qualify as a 'veil' but I wasn't positive so when it didn't go away I called his office in the early afternoon, told the receptionist what was going on, and she said she would have someone get back to me. Well, guess what. They *never* called, and by the time I realized they hadn't called it was a few minutes after 5:00. I thought maybe what I had described on the phone hadn't sounded serious to them and thought about just trying again on Monday, but something told me that maybe it was serious, so I called again, just in case, and got the answering service who said the on-call doctor would get back to me. Well, it turns out that all of the ophthalmologists in the Boulder area cover for each other, so instead of another doctor in the same practice, it was Dr. McCormack who called me back. "Yes," he said, "what I was experiencing *was* potentially serious," and he really should see me that very night. As in, within a few hours. Dr. McCormack met us, at 9pm on a Friday night, at the locked building, let us in, opened his office, examined my eye and...whoa! I had a big tear in my retina and it was very serious! Ordinarily it would have required immediately going to the hospital so he could use the laser to try to repair it, but in another stroke of luck (the first being that it was Dr. McCormack on call), that laser had just been moved to the Boulder Medical Center offices the previous week! He performed the procedure on the spot. And that other doctor's office? They didn't contact me again until *Tuesday*! If I'd have waited for them to call me, the odds are very good I would have lost vision in that eye. I have a background in two different medical professions myself, and all I can say is that Dr. McCormack is incredible - he's straight-forward, very competent, and generally wonderful. He has my undying gratitude! read more

My experience with Dr. McCormack was okay, although pretty expensive. But the real problem is Russ, the contact lens specialist. You have to get your contacts from Russ, and he is a disaster. He ALWAYS gives you lenses with an incorrect prescription the first time you see him, with the hope that you'll make an appointment with him to fix it. If you make an appointment he charges you, so make sure you just drop back in without an appointment. Russ has screwed up my prescription all 3 times I've seen Dr. McCormack, and I usually have to go back to Russ 2 or 3 times before he finally gets it right. He's a real scam artist. Unbelievable they let him stay at Boulder Med Center. I would not go to see Dr. McCormack if you intend to get a contact lens prescription. Dealing with Russ is just not worth the trouble. It took me 3 times to figure this out, but now I will not go back. read more

Unethical business practices. I requested only the specific services that my VSP insurance covered for a small deductible. They ended up doing a number of procedures without telling me it cost extra and then billed me hundreds of dollars. I complained to both Dr McCormick and Boulder Medical Center Business office and followed up with registered letters of complaint but neither offered to make amends. I was happy that his office could fit me in the same day I called since I've been having a lot of trouble with itchiness and swelling in my eyes for 1 week, but the experience was less than satisfactory. The nurse and the doctor really did not seem interested in hearing the entire case. The doctor looked at my eyes for less than 30 seconds and concluded viral conjunctivitis, and then had the horrible bedside manner as he was leaving to say "well, I'd shake your hand but,...." I never got to ask him if the mildew from our flooded basement could have played role in my eyes' itchiness?, did I have swollen bumps on my eyelids, which I've had before and are a sign of allergies?, he couldn't answer if it's normal for viral conjunctivitis to first present as a week of itchy eyes with no discharge. He really just treated me like I had the plague and wanted to get away fast, even though my three family members in close contact with me all day have not contracted anything. Then to conclude the strange experience, I asked the nurse what my vision had tested as as I was leaving. I thought this should be a fairly simple question since I was the only patient there, and really that information should have been given to me during my exam anyway. The nurse proceeded to take a long phone call, and do another exam! before getting back to me. read more

Dr. McCormack has a great "chair-side" manor. He is calm, knowledgeable, and explains things in real English. I had headaches that turned out to be from having glasses that were too strong. He drew diagrams that helped me explain this and his new prescription helped get rid of my headaches. That took a little while, but he told me that it would take some time for my eyes to adjust. I went to Dr. McCormack for a very bad eye infection. On my first visit he wrote me a prescription for eye drops and told me to come back the next day. When I got to the pharmacy the drops were $100 and then when I went to my next appointment, he seemed shocked they cost so much then told me I needed another type of drop as well. He gave me these for free then told me to come back again in a week. At this point I told him that this was getting a little expensive and that last time I went to a Boulder Medical Center Doctor it was $90 per visit. He reassured me there was no way I would be charged this much so I came back for a third time. At this point my eye was better yet he still told me to come back again. I finally refused thinking a fourth visit was completely unnecessary. Lo and behold the bill comes for these visits and I have been charged $109 per visit and this was after insurance covered $35 per visit. I called the billing office to plead for them to lessen the charged and they told me that only Dr. McCormack could set the price and he refused to change the amount. I only saw this man for 5 mins each visit and he flat out lied to me about the cost. This doctor is only out for your money and will make you spend unnecessary amounts on treatment you don't need. I will never set foot in his office again! read more
