Don't judge a book by its cover?! This place is sensational! Serve breakfast and lunch at same time which is awesome since I'm not big on breakfast foods. Everything is from scratch! It is soooo delicious. It takes a little longer to make but not much and very worth it! I had a fajita quesadilla that had tons of filling, fresh sour cream and salsa with a nice bite. He had Enchiladas Divorciados and raved. The place remained busy while we ate in; lots of to-go orders too. The locals know great food. The staff were all super kind as well. Everything! Great baked foods and great breakfast burritos. Wonderful atmosphere. The restaurant is in a turn of the century historic building in Monte Vista. They have a drive through that opens at 6 AM and the bakery opens at 7 AM. Everything closes at 3 PM. read more

Wow- we popped in spur of the moment and were so surprised at how delicious our food was. Husband tried the Achido Burrito with bacon and I had the Chipotle Chicken Burrito. Both were excellent. The reason I wanted to try Don Tomas was the many 5 star reviews and the impressive website. When my husband and I entered the establishment, I was disappointed immediately. We ordered food at the cash register but the menus were old and dingy. The website gave the impression that all items were available. I was especially interested in the crepes but was told they only had the Nutella crepe. I ended up ordering the cheese enchilada with bacon, and my husband had the breakfast burrito with sausage. I might be giving away a local secret.. but this is a must for breakfast or lunch. We were driving through for skiing and stopped in off a recommendation from a local. There's a stocked cabinet of fresh pastries right inside the door, and a counter overflowing with coffee and juices options. At the register you can order a hot breakfast like eggs, scrambles, rancheros, or a breakfast burrito. Then you grab yourself a coffee and nibble on a pastry while you watch them make your order in the kitchen. You pay once you enjoy the fantastic meal. As for the food, let's start with the pastries. They have the original inspiration for roti buns here. Ricas Conchas, which are light and airy buns coated with a sugary-coffee top. They're amazing with coffee and for when you don't want something as sweet as a donut. Their Taiwanese & Korean sister the roti bun are filled with butter or cream, but these are better for breakfast, I feel. As for the hot food.. just fantastic. The eggs are local, the bread is homemade. It's better than mom's breakfasts (sorry mom). Overall, this place is a must when you're driving by on your way to the resort. Our new secret treasure, found! Smiling faces, extremely friendly staff, great baked goods, great prices. We walked in a few minutes after closing according to the hours posted on the door though the neon "open" sign was still on. Don Tomas and the staff were sitting down to dinner, but they hopped up to serve us, even putting on a fresh pot of coffee when she saw us heading for the serve yourself pots. So nice! Now, whenever we're driving through the San Luis Valley, Don Tomas will be where we stop for coffee, donuts, smiles and maybe a breakfast burrito. Yum. read more

Stopped by this classic small town bakery. Seems to be a easy going family run place. A display case in the back left, showcases an abundant assortment of freshly baked goods. Was not disappointed. Be warned, hold the screen door, or it will slam and you'll look like a tourist. read more

One of the pastries was a cinnamon roll that I snuck a bite from while I was waiting for my meal, ended up getting a few more of those with a half dozen cookies and some other variety of pastries. The people are friendly but the service was very slow. The food was good. My breakfast had bell peppers in it which was not listed on the menu. Not a big deal for me but my other half is allergic to bell pepper (just means I can't share ). The donuts looked yummy but one of the things I have to avoid. read more
