The procedure itself seems scarier in your head, but Dr. Benderev gives you the correct expectations and communicates the whole way. It really isn't bad at all, I absolutely recommend to get it done with Dr. Benderev. He even checks up on you after the surgery multiple times, I'm really so thankful I chose him to do the vasectomy. Dr. Benderev is the man!

5 stars. I chose Dr. Benderev largely because of his great reviews, and after going through the…read moreprocedure myself, I completely understand why. Scheduling and preparation were incredibly easy. They covered everything so thoroughly beforehand that it was actually difficult to think of questions to ask. During the procedure, Dr. Benderev explained what was happening as he went, which I really appreciated. The actual procedure was incredibly quick--I'd estimate about 15 minutes, plus another 15 minutes or so for prep and afterward. I had a little discomfort, but no actual pain. I opted for the nitrous and would absolutely recommend it. It made an already easy experience even more comfortable. What impressed me most, though, was the follow-up. With how efficiently the office operates, you might expect to feel like patients are just being moved through, but my experience was the complete opposite. Dr. Benderev personally followed up by call/text over the subsequent days to see how I was doing. That level of personal attention really stood out. The staff was also fantastic. I had an unexpected death in the family the week of my procedure and thought I might need to reschedule. I ultimately didn't, but the staff was completely understanding and ready to work with me while I figured out my family's plans. Recovery was MUCH easier than I expected. I took Tylenol preemptively but never needed it for ongoing pain. Icing was more than enough. Three days after the procedure, I went on a family trip to Big Bear with two kids under two and was able to keep up just fine. There was some minor discomfort, but nothing I would describe as painful. (Of course, I definitely described the situation a little differently to my wife for the first two days...) For any guy putting this off because he's nervous: I kid you not, about 15 minutes and it's done. If you're deciding between this and having your wife undergo a more invasive procedure, this was far less invasive than I had imagined. With two kids under two and stairs at home, I milked the first two days with my wife, but by days 3-5 I felt basically back to normal. A couple of practical tips from my experience: get the nitrous, consider taking something before bed if you're a stomach sleeper, and have some dark-colored supportive briefs available during recovery. I had a little spotting after the third day, although I was probably doing more than I should have while on vacation. Overall, excellent experience from preparation through recovery, and Dr. Benderev's personal follow-up afterward really sets the practice apart.

I had a very frustrating experience with The Clark Center Surgery…read more I needed to reschedule my surgery due to nerves and wanting more time to fully understand the risks. That is when I was told about a $500 cancellation fee within two weeks, something that was never clearly communicated. My entire scheduling process was handled through text, not a single phone call, and even at my pre op appointment exactly two weeks before surgery, this fee was never mentioned. When I called, I was repeatedly told "it is the policy" without any real explanation. I asked to speak to a manager, and the assistant administrator, Shannon, called me back. Unfortunately, she was very difficult to deal with. Her tone was stern and dismissive, and I barely had a chance to explain my concerns before she said, "Angela, it is our policy," speaking slowly in a way that felt condescending. I explained that I was not calling to argue that they have policies. My concern was the lack of communication and the fact that everything was scheduled so close to that two week window. I asked to speak with the administrator since she reports to them, but she refused and said, "No, this is my job, and no one will be calling you back." At one point, she also said, "Well, I am going to charge your credit card on file," which was completely inappropriate. I fully understand that offices have policies, but this is surgery, clear communication matters. Patients should not be expected to rely on fine print from an initial visit when surgery was not even planned yet. Even on my preop, it was not mentioned. I do want to say Dr. Clark and Carrie have been great, but because of how this was handled, I will not be returning.

His dermatologist recommended Dr Gelman and another specialist in Utah. We chose California first because it was closer. Unfortunately, our experience was INCREDIBLY DISAPPOINTING! My husband was experiencing severe scrotal lymphedema that continued to worsen despite seeing multiple doctors before we met with Dr Gelman. During our appointment with Dr Gelman, we spent approximately 45 minutes being told that his weight was the problem. Grabbing his belly, calling him fat. COMPLETING HUMILIATING. Told him he needs to get gastric bypass, then maybe we could talk about surgery. What made this even more frustrating was that Dr Gleman has published research and treated patients with much larger cases of scrotal lymphedema, including the patient featured on TLC with a 132 pound scrotum!! My husband was nowhere near that size, yet we were told his weight was the issue and no effort was made to determine the underlying cause of his lymphedema. As we later learned, obesity was NOT the cause of his condition. We later learned that the underlying problem was severe lymphatic dysfunction. His lymphatic system was not properly draining the fluid from the area, which caused the progressive buildup of fluid, inflammation, and tissue. His condition was much more complex than simply being overweight like Dr Gelman blamed the cause on. A little while after his appointment with Dr Gelman, he developed cellulitis that progressed to sepsis where his kidneys began to shut down. We had just switched insurance plans and happened to be in a 15 day coverage gap leaving us with approximately $50,000 in medical bills. He had never spent a single night in a hospital before. Imagine this never would've happened if Dr Gelman actually wanted to help look for a solution instead of being fatphobic. We saw the second specialist at University of Utah who IMMEDIATELY said, "We need to fix this." He immediately recognized the severity of the condition, fought through the insurance hurdles with us, and performed surgery. Looking back, it's heartbreaking to think about how much suffering, time, and money might have been prevented if we had received a more thorough evaluation and a willingness to investigate the cause instead of attributing everything to weight. I would never recommend Dr Joel Gelman.

According to his own post-surgery notes, he estimated my tumor size at 1 cm. However, in our pathology meeting, he contradicted himself and said (I record all my medical meetings, so I can quote him): "It's a big tumor, it's about 3 centimeters. It was a very sizable tumor." Notably, a tumor over or equal to 3 cm would be the only feature of my cancer that would push me into an intermediate-risk category--and he happens to be running a clinical trial for intermediate-risk bladder cancer treatment. He and his Clinical Research Coordinator, Imma Villamor, then pressed me to join his MoonRISE-1 trial for intravesical therapy for intermediate-risk bladder cancer patients, which is funded by Johnson & Johnson. He said the other option was "a medication called BCG, which is dead tuberculosis, and it just basically burns everything. Burns cancer, burns your bladder, burns everything." He said that I had an 80% chance of the cancer returning, but with treatment, that likelihood would drop to 20%. Boy, that sounds scary! That's because what he said was either an exaggeration or, in the case of the size of my tumor, a complete lie, to get me into a medical trial that serves no medical purpose for my condition. Since my tumor was 1 cm (not 3 cm), I'm in a low-risk category and do not require intravesical treatment, particularly not with BCG. My current urologist estimates recurrence at 50-60%, clearly explained his rationale for treatment, and recommended two regular cystoscopies for monitoring--which obviously is better than the hassle and side effects of two years of intravesical chemo treatment. My future is still uncertain, but I am thankful I eventually got a correct diagnosis and didn't rely on these unscrupulous researchers. Imma Villamor has not returned my emails, and I've had a phone call with Genesis Headache Clinic Program Director Alicia Duyvejonck. Nobody seems to think there's any problem with anything that happened to me. So you be the judge--would you want to be treated by doctors who lied to you and misdiagnosed your cancer to get you into their study?
