They didn't even pull it into the garage and charged me $74 to tell me I needed a new Starter Motor. Which was already known. So here's the full story-- Called early morning Wednesday (7:09am), The mechanic that answered looked at the schedule and said he could take a look and to bring it in. It was towed and dropped off at 7:50am. They couldn't get to it (I'm a single mom so had to rent a car to pick up my son from school) They called me the following day Thursday at 12:40pm, telling me they didn't pull it into the garage or run a full diagnostic as I requested, but instead they tried starting it up and that the Starter Motor needs to be replaced. (We figured that much) -- Noticing I will need an oil change soon they added that in, for a total of $880.00 for the repair. I asked for the price without the oil change and she said $728. NEARLY $160 for an oil change is absurd. When I asked about the diagnostic and why I was being charged for a diagnostic when they didnt even give me any information we didnt already know, and they didnt run a full diagnostic, I was faced with an attitude and told "we could have charged you $140 for an hour of diagnostics, but we only charged you for a half-hour". I'm sorry does pushing the start button on a vehicle take 30 minutes? As someone that lives a block away and this is the most convenient place, I STILL wouldn't go back. Even the guys at O'Reilys said they were total rip offs.

The second time, it was obvious fraud (complete failure to address the problem coupled with replacing a part that was good). Am I glad I switched! They do look at things carefully and give accurate assessments of both current and impending problems (like tire wear, for instance, AHEAD of when they need to be replaced). There is absolutely no pressure to buy parts or services from them, based on what they report. From what I've seen and other people tell me, the Darlings try to keep repairs as reasonably affordable as they can. They are more than willing to prioritize what needs to be done, so it can be spread out. Their hourly labor rate is competitive with similar businesses, but since they are competent, it's kind of a bargain. The only drawback is that A LOT of people recommend Phil and Son's. That's bad because it means that there's a wait when I want to get MY car in. In spite of that, I've directed my best friends there because what nicer thing can you do for your friends than to find a very good and ethical mechanic? He's always there, when I have a surprise mechanical hiccup and need his help. No matter how busy he is, he finds a way to get me into his hectic schedule. It means the world to me to be able to maintain my car in an affordable way, and to have the work done in a shop that is Honest and takes Pride in the service they deliver. Most recently, I had 3 small issues, right when Dave was on Vacation. In a pinch, I tried a large shop that is nearby me, on Broad Street. The place begins with G. Gee, was that a Huge Mistake! Not only did they charge for a Diagnosis, which was not discussed, or needed, but the work bid, in addition, was over $2200, and that was an estimate! Oh, and they couldn't tell me when my car would be fixed! On top, they are a AAA shop and I got charged for an extra tow, just to get my car to Dave's. 'Not finished working with AAA on that. This story ends, Happily. Dave repaired my car and the bill was about 75% Less than I was quoted from Garage Gee Whiz! Are you Kidding Me! I knew Paul, Dave's Dad, and he was an Incredible Gentleman, too. 'So Wonderful to have Chuck's, with Dave and his new partner, Elvin, at the helm. I don't how to say Thank You, enough.
