We had another great meal at Don Ramon Mexican Restaurant. The chips came out warm and crispy and paired perfectly with the cold salsa and the delicious bean and cheese dip. We ordered the Texas Don Ramon and the portion was huge--definitely big enough to share. The margaritas are always perfectly mixed and the perfect way to finish the meal. Ordered soup and a taco salad as take out. Food was prepared and ready exactly as they said it would. Soup was plentiful and had lots of chicken. Great sides/condiments with the soup. The taco salad was good but not outstanding. A little too much queso. Next time I will ask for less or even to have it on the side. read more

My partner, myself, and a friend of ours came here last night (12-30-23) to grab some dinner before the night ended, the food was amazing. Service was quick, attentive, and very sweet. The atmosphere was beautiful. Unfortunately there is a negative-ish part to this review.. I did not finish all of my food and requested a to-go box, moved the food, closed the box, left the restaurant and came home. Well this morning my partner asked to finish off my leftovers and I agreed, he opens the box for the first time since leaving the restaurant, eats most of what was left when he pulls what seems to be a small thin piece of metal (photo attached to review) out of his mouth after he chewed for a second. Upon pulling into the parking lot you'll notice a good crowd of people who frequent Don Ramon's. Once inside you'll notice the Mexican decorations and a full sized wagon wheel framed out in window above one of the booths, which bring out a nice flair for the restaurant. Our waitress was very quick to bring out chips and salsa for us to enjoy as we perused the menu. Going for lunch seemed to be only half the experience as the dinner portions and choices were generous. I ordered the Burrito California, a tasty combination of Mexican rice, Steak, Chopped onions, burrito, and queso blanco (hot melted white cheese). Service was good, as our waitress brought over refills on chips, salsa, and drinks throughout the meal. so the food was the best thing her and it wasn't all that great....So I had grilled shrimp in a spicy sauce, rice, salad add beans, it tasted okay together... not separately. salsa--no , margarita tasted like a watered down snow cone. Service was trash, I walked in and the caucasian lady at the register acted as if I was invisible--no hi , no just a sec, how can I help you .. nothing . I spoke to her after a minute or too and asked was it self seating. she replied i'll seat u in a sec........? so a guy comes up and offers to seat me. Got seated waitress comes up and says drink ? no greeting . I order. the same guy from before brings my drink and food. My waitress NEVER came back. Hubs & I arrived in Forest City today for his work. After setting up our home on wheels & unpacking the vehicles, we were tired & hungry. We were headed to a seafood place when I spotted Don Ramon's. Hubs was on board since Mexican is one of his favorites. We started with the standard chips & salsa. I requested a mild salsa due to a sensitive tummy. Usually, mild salsa is pretty bland, but theirs was very flavorful. We also ordered their spinach & cheese dip. Whoever came up with the idea of putting that on their menu needs a raise. I already love cheese dip, but not a big fan of spinach unless it's raw on a salad. The spinach just added the right amount of tang to the cheese, plus it was a huge serving. We couldn't even finish it, which is a first for us. Hubs decided on the Don Ramon, which was a mix of veggies & chicken (his choice of meat) over a bed of rice; I ordered Pollo Fundido. He was very pleased with his meal. Said it was different from what he usually orders (burritos; he loves burritos) & that he'll probably order it again in the future. As for mine, it was hands down the best I've ever had, flavor-wise. Even the rice & beans that came with it were exceptional. While all of mine was pretty standard Mexican restaurant fare, this had a different taste than what I'm accustomed to & it was delicious. I rarely clean my plate, usually getting a box to finish the food off the next day. I couldn't quit eating this plate of food. It was THAT good. We should be in this area for 3-4 months & I'm pretty sure that Don Ramon's will be one of those places that we will go to over & over. I might try their chimichangas next time. Went with friends to lunch. . I was one of the last to pay. Manager added food charges to my bill becasuse he said someone ordered it so I needed to pay it. Told him it was not mine. Said still had to pay for it. There are much better mexican restaurants in Shelby to dine. read more

My first time eating here and my last. The flies were terrible. The waitress we had was not good, we ended up having to ask to get refills and service. We waited on our food for a long time and what was brought to the table was not enough for the price you pay, but I can say, the taste of the food was good. Don Ramon's is consistently crowded and to be frank, I have no earthly idea why. The food is not very good. The chips are pretty good but that's it. The service has been slow every time I've been. If you want Mexican food in Shelby don't go here, try El Acapulco, Mexican Express, or even Mi Pueblito. read more

This place was packed full with people and I can see why. We had to wait about 15 minutes before we got a seat, and it took about another 10 minutes to get our drinks/chips. I can understand this as they were completely full. I ordered the Chile Colorado with steak, chicken, and shrimp. The Chipotle sauce that came on it was very close to authentic. It was spicy and delicious paired with a tortilla, rice, and beans. The cheese sauce they serve with the chips was delicious too. The part that got me was the price. House specialties for $12 and under? That's the most you'll spend for anything, and I fed 4 people for under $40. Our table's food came in in five minute increments. By the time my daughter was finished with her food, mine had arrived. My daughter had a guacamole salad which was comprised of iceberg lettuce, tomatoes and guacamole. I love the Don Ramon Favorito (Texas - with shrimp, chicken, and steak) I've tried a few other dishes here and every time I have they have been delicious. The cheese dip is really good and the guac is alright. They would do soooo much better if the guac was fresh prepped at that table like one of the other places (I won't mention the competition in a review for another just seems wrong). Anyway this is a great spot to eat in Shelby. I would love to see them do a buffet. We lack a quality Mexican buffet in this little town and if they introduced one here like our neighbor city (Gastonia) I think it'd do well. read more

Now that El Eden is gone, Don Ramon's is my favorite Mexican Restaurant in Shelby. It's a friendly, colorful, fun place with excellent chips and salsa, a very diverse menu, and pretty reasonable prices. I went last night and had the chili colorado. I will admit that it was pretty spicey, but it was still quite good. Their fried Xango is also very good. Not as good as Mi Pueblito's, but still delicious. The rice here is very good, too. Lots of flavor and bits of vegetables mixed in. Me gusta! read more

My wife and I ate here while driving through Shelby recently. Our experience was fine, but it didn't stand out. Pros: Service was fast (particular considering the place was packed). Food was hot and tasty. Cons: The restaurant is kinda small and claustrophobic inside. On a Saturday evening, we felt a bit crowded. The menu said Chimichangas came in chicken or beef tips, so I asked for beef; I got ground beef. Not a huge issue and I didn't ask for it to be remade, but I would have specified beef tips if I'd known that ground beef was an option. While the food was good, there wasn't anything to distinguish it from any other Mexican restaurant. read more

I am shocked! This business has been at this location for over a year, and I am the first to review! In the 4 years we have lived in Shelby, I think this is first restaurant in this location to make the one year mark, so that speaks well. It is a difficult location (accessibility, limited parking) but the food, the atmosphere, and the service make it worth the hassle. There is a small outside area. The restrooms are exceptionally tidy and the building overall is very clean. The dining room is often decorated with the theme of the moment (Halloween, St Patrick's. etc....) and the staff goes right along with it. Food: Excellent! We went a few weeks ago and food was terrible. I got fajitas steak, chicken and shrimp. Shrimp was ok, but the steak and chicken were horrible. You could tell the chicken was precooked and probably heated up several times. It didn't even resemble real food. read more

So this has become mine and my husbands new Thursday date night. The servers are so kind friendly and this is what customer service should be like. Never liked guac now...only guac I will eat. Husband has never eaten salsa....he finishes the bowl :) the only thing I have noticed is since eating here so much....the consistency is not on point. Sometimes guac smooth, sometimes chunky. Refried beans sometimes smooth sometimes seem maybe a little old? Minor things but I like what I like. You have to try because they do know what they are doing! This is a good solid Mexican restaurant. If you don't see it on the menu, you can describe it and they can try to make it. Great for lunch, as they have the typical bargains/lunch specials. I really enjoy their lunch steak fajitas. Pretty good salsa. They generally have a special of the day and a beer/drink special. Dos Equis Amber on tap. Try the chile rellenos, if you go for that sort of thing - very tasty. Small outdoor patio area for nice weather. Good place to bring the kids. read more

Sadly, this was far from authentic Mexican food. Coming from the Southwest, where they know Mexican food, this was a marginal alternative. The beef in the tacos and enchiladas lacked seasoning. The beans needed salt and some spice. The burritos lacked any vegetables like lettuce, tomatoes or onions. The green "chili" sauce was more like canned green verde salsa. The red "chili" sauce for the burritos resembled Ragu Spaghetti sauce. Then came the sopapillas. What a disaster those were. Flattened tortilla-like bread that was seriously over cooked, drizzled with a chocolate ice cream sauce and smothered in a watery Lite Cool Whip. The food was very disappointing. The only bright side was the staff. They were friendly and attentive. Kudos to them. At least this evening gave us some memories that will last for a while. read more
