I would come back just for this, and I can see why they are well known for it. Price was $11.50 -taco plate: comes with side of rice and beans, or you can just get rice. This place really has me excited - but I have to be honest... too much salt in the food, undeveloped flavor, and zucchini and carrot in the soup in place of what should have been lots of avocado, onion, and cilantro. The Cajun salad tasted good and had great ingredients... fresh avo, and I loved that they use good, rich greens not iceberg - but this was also way too salty and my hands were swollen the next day after eating it. The salad was basic - lettuce, tomatoes, minimal feta, and even more minimal avocado (opted to skip the croutons and cranberries). It came with bottled ranch dressing. Perhaps getting the tortillas, rice, and beans as the side is the better move (though salad was even their recommendation). As for the grilled chicken, unfortunately, I have had better at El Pollo Loco. The seasoning was there and very authentic, but the white meat was dry. Dipping into salsa made it tolerable. Also, the chicken was not freshly cooked and not hot at all; probably reheated to a warm temperature even. Service: The woman taking orders was very nice! She gave us ample time to go through the menu and even worked with diet restrictions. Atmosphere: Went in an hour before closing. Mainly take out orders being picked up. Their chicken here is great but there have been some occasions we have come to Don Pollo and it is closed during their operating hours so sometimes we hesitate going not knowing if they'll be open or close. Today we got a chance to eat here. We decided to try the chicken soup that is labeled "San Diego's Best Chicken Soup" on their menu. I found the soup tasted good but not hearty. I felt that it needed more ingredients. We also ordered a pork street taco. Now that was a good street taco! The restaurant is located in a strip mall surrounding with other various types of businesses. Walked in the wrong door LOL so make sure you look at the name of the restaurant before going in as the businesses are kind of close together and you could accidentally walk in the wrong door. My go to is the chicken burrito, but just their simple bean and cheese burrito is delicious. Their food feels healthy compared to others. I have had the chicken soup, tacos, quesadillas. All delicious. Have never been disappointed. On some level I think the quality of the rice and beans say something about a Mexican take out place and the pride they take in their food. Such a great restaurant that is a hidden gem in Poway. Tucked away in a small shopping center it packs a powerful punch when it comes to taste. Service is quick and they bring your food to your table. I ordered the two piece chicken plate. It came with beans, rice, onions, chicken, and tortillas if you want to wrap up your chicken. I ended up getting a box to take half home which will make a great lunch or dinner tomorrow. Check this place out. They have a really great chicken soup. The meat is juicy and flavorful. The salad is fresh and crisp. It was easy to find parking and I was impressed how busy it was.
