Domino's is a brand which needs no introduction, being in so many different countries, I've often found the branches in the UK to be pretty hit and miss apart from sharing the fact that they're all severely overpriced, however this is when the branch at Overtoom turns in, I was in the area after a disappointing experience at Starbucks across the way and being aware of their gluten-free range, I decided to call in.
Domino's only offered two gluten-free pizzas on the menu here, as the case in The Netherlands branches of the chain, which is a shame as in other countries such as back home in the UK, they allow you to mix and match and basically pick any pizza with a gluten-free base.
The staff here seemed really friendly, we even got talking about football, as my team, Manchester City had recently defeated Arsenal 2-0.
This isn't a place where you'd go for a taste of Italy, it's fast food and most of the pizzas are typical to what you'd find in a delivery chain like this, but the menu is so much reduced in size compared to other countries, once again comparing to the UK and the US.
My pizza came to a total of 9.95 euros, in comparison this costs £8.93 in UK pounds and the same pizza in the UK would have cost £14.99 on the regular menu with no offers, this means it is over £6 cheaper. Amsterdam is somewhere I've found to be an expensive city, but to find somewhere with prices around 40% cheaper than the UK really was awesome to see!
As with the normal gluten-free base, it was small and a thick base, but the toppings especially the passata and cheese added to the quality of the base, making it a juicy pizza, the base wasn't my prefered style of base, as I prefer pizzas that are thinner and crispier but that doesn't mean this wasn't a satisfactory pizza as it was juicy and in most bites, it was good. There were some slight issues with the edges of the pepperoni being burnt but this is a minor issue.
The seating in the store was very limited, it was pretty much bar-style high seating in the window, perhaps enough seats for 4-6 people, but this is mainly a delivery retailer, as you can see through multiple branded Domino's deliver motorbikes outside.
Drinks selection was quite limited and mainly consisted of pop and fizzy beverages, the only iced tea was a sparkling one which I deteste.
Overall, this branch of Domino's can teach the UK a thing or two, in what Domino's should be like - reasonably priced, good service and decent tasting food - adding more selection in terms of pizzas and sides for people who are gluten-free, and perhaps a better seating area and maybe a screen to keep track of your order, similar to what you get when you order online would be improvements this store can make, but as this is probably the best Domino's I've been to and one of the better pizza delivery places I've been to, I feel Domino's here on Overtoom in Amsterdam, deserves a slightly generous four-star rating and alongside Vapiano, is one of the great pizzas I've had during my time in the Dutch capital! read more
