In a word, "Wow." It's a big market, with many indoor "shops" and many outdoor stands- takes a bit of walking to see it all... much bigger in size than the downtown Durham Farmer's Market, for example. There's a bit of everything there- small electronics (especially car adaptors), cell phones and accessories, household items (ranging from mattress pads to fly swatters), toys, BB guns, cosmetics, incense, and other miscellaneous items. Most of it is stuff you'll pass right by, but still neat to window-shop. LOTS of FOOD, too... tons of vegetables and fruit from multiple vendors, candy/ chocolate, etc. Best of all, it's all very cheap! In addition, it's a great place to go just eat! Many vendors sell burgers/ dogs, but also tacos, pupusas, sliced up fruit (like mango-on-a-stick), fresh-made ice cream, cooked nuts, smoothies, and other interesting drinks (coconut milk, tamarind drink, etc). I had a loroco (vine flower bud from Central America) pupusa, and it was delightful- came with a spicy pickled slaw. Also thoroughly enjoyed the coconut milk as well as some of the chocolates from a vendor inside. Best of all, it was just generally "friendly." I felt like a part of a real community walking around there, as the vendors and shoppers were so nice. My son used some of his allowance to buy a box of "snappers" from one vendor, and the vendor went ahead and gave him a second box for free. Many food vendors gave samples, and didn't then look at you funny if you didn't buy anything, but instead, wished you a nice day. Other shoppers were working-class and very friendly, helping each other out. Too often, we spend our days not noticing others around us as we swiftly sweep through sterile shops. This was a welcome change.

Elegant Relic is both a home furnishing store, with a fair mix of redone antique items and modern equivalents. But they also have a cute clothing boutique that has some unusual items. There's a vintage vibe to everything. Maybe it's the subdued lighting, the scented candles and the hardwood floors, but everything is well displayed and draws you in. The clothing in the upstairs area (hen feathers) has a bohemian feel with mostly unstructured garments, but that might be owing more to the time of year than anything else. Although I didn't find anything I had to have, it was nice change of pace. The owner directed me to quite a few items on special and owing to her salesmanship skills, nearly had me buying it all. She wasn't pushy about it, though, and that itself was pretty remarkable. For the most part though, when I preferred to browse without a sales person following me around, the Elegant Relic staff let that happen. It's not a particularly inexpensive store, but they are consistent other stores of this kind. Elegant Relic does have something in nearly all price points though, and enough to let me find a nice gift without breaking the bank.

However, the roll containers just sit in front of shelves that have product on them. It would make sense to keep them in the back, but that's impossible because whoever orders the inventory for this store- TERRIBLE AT THEIR JOB. The way to do inventory would be common sense, order only what you need and maybe the store wouldn't look like it does. Marcus/GM is over worked and under paid. Start paying your employees the proper wage and maybe people would actually enjoy working for your company.

I've had great luck with the housewares- most recently getting an air fryer and a rice cooker and a set of sheets, still in the new packaging. Their prices are very fair, and I feel like they really want to move inventory, which is how it should be. The staff is always friendly and the music they play is excellent. I love spending an hour or so browsing here.
