As for Family Dollar locations in general I consider them a lower…read moretier smaller branch of a Walmart or Target; carrying similar items, but slightly lower in quality. I love them because you can always find them throughout the city which makes it slightly more convenient to find more than a Walmart or Target. I tend to purchase the typical hygiene & cleaning items at Family Dollar locations, such as shaving cream, deodorant, hair grease, soap, mean green, bleach, etc. I have even purchased food items at Family Dollar locations which it carries the basics, but nowhere near as much as a Walmart. As for this location, it's convenient to me because I live right down the street from it. I can always find simple things to cook, plus the hygiene items that I lack which all are at affordable prices. However, what annoys me about this location are the panhandlers, plus the "blue square" (Newport Cigarette) sellers that are always in the parking lot which I do not even make eye contact with while heading in the store. This store is a huge plus for the East Garfield Neighborhood because there are so many things that the neighborhood lacks, but at least there is a Family Dollar in the neighborhood and from what I see it is relatively new. No complaints on my end, I'am always greeted once I enter and I always have been treated with respect as a customer, plus things are always organized when I shop here. Thomas G

However, the same issues still exist. They never have anything on the shelves....Never. Every time I come in, there are piles and piles of boxes in the aisle. I assume they are always in the process of stocking the shelves, but never really complete the task. Also, all the brands that I buy are behind the cash register. It's so annoying that I can't enjoy smelling the different scents of Dove soap. Family Dollar is great because it almost gives you the luxury of shopping in like a Target or Wal-Mart without having to leave your neighborhood. It also gives you that dollar store experience. Overall, it's great to have this store in a low income neighborhood, because it allows the neighbors to purchase items to clean their homes. However, it's hard shopping there sometimes.

Most generic products are surprisingly high quality, and their fresh meat even looked quite good - better than Meijer's, actually! I'll assume most of you are familiar with Aldi and how wonderful it can be. (Fun fact: Aldi shoppers have much higher average incomes than people who shop at chain grocery stores like Jewel and Meijer.) But you won't find the fancy stuff Aldi carries - wines, expensive European cheeses or chocolate, random home decor, electronics, etc. Instead Save-a-Lot has a slightly bigger selection of most food items, and they'll often offer the brand name next to the generic. Kinda nice if you insist on some name brand things, like soda or detergent or even Chef Boyardee. This store was quite clean when I went in. You bag your own groceries, and they accept credit cards.

Sometimes they don't play well with others. Sometimes they want you to play their game. Sometimes they play their game poorly. Sometimes they blame you for it. This being a small-footprint Target store, the foot traffic is going to be hyperlocal. The neighborhood is extremely unpleasant, and Chicago is one of those places where instead of selling a townhome for a loss, they'll simply leave it empty for their friends to stay in until the market rebounds. A lot of people go to Target for retail therapy. Unless your bad day is worse than their bad day, they'll make your bad day even worse.

I had an extremely upsetting experience at the Joliet mall store today involving a supervisor…read morenamed Tina. I have shopped at Bath & Body Works for years, and I have never left a store feeling as embarrassed and uncomfortable as I did today. While checking out, I asked to use two different coupons by making two separate transactions. These were not duplicate coupons--they had different offers and different expiration dates. What made the situation particularly confusing was that, while standing in line, I personally watched another customer do essentially the same thing at a different register without any issue. When Tina told me I could not do two transactions, I asked what would happen if I simply walked out of the store and came back in to use the second coupon. Her response to me was, "Yeah, if you want to be like that," said in an unnecessarily rude and condescending tone. At that point, the situation was no longer about a coupon. It was about the way I was being spoken to and treated in front of a line of customers and other employees. I asked Tina for her name and whether she could give me a card or simply write her name down for me. She refused. When I asked, "You can't write it down?" she responded that I could "put it in my phone if I wanted it." I found the entire interaction humiliating. I became so flustered and upset that I was physically shaking. I couldn't even find the money I had intended to use to pay for my purchase. Ultimately, I left with only my free item. I did not purchase the other item I intended to buy, I did not get my birthday gift, and I was unable to use my second coupon. What bothers me most is how unnecessarily confrontational this interaction became. If there is a company policy regarding separate transactions or coupon use, I completely understand that employees are expected to follow it. However, there is an enormous difference between politely explaining a policy to a customer and embarrassing that customer in front of an entire checkout area. As a supervisor, I would expect Tina to set the example for how customers should be treated. Instead, her comment--"if you want to be like that"--and her demeanor made me feel as though I was doing something wrong simply for asking a question about using a valid coupon. The fact that I had just watched another customer make separate transactions with coupons at another register made the experience even more upsetting and confusing. I walked into Bath & Body Works expecting an enjoyable shopping experience and to treat myself for my birthday and instead walked out feeling humiliated and physically shaken. I was so upset afterward that I genuinely do not feel comfortable returning to this location. I am asking Bath & Body Works to please review what happened, including the inconsistent handling of coupon transactions and, most importantly, the way this interaction was handled by a member of store leadership. I had been looking forward to getting my birthday reward all week. And I am so sad that this is how Tina treats customers. The fact that I was never able to use my birthday reward and the coupon I earned because I became too upset to complete my intended purchases makes me sad & disappointed.
