AVOID THIS PLACE LIKE THE PLAGUE! COMPLETE RIPOFF! This has got to be the biggest ripoff ever. Reserved a minivan for 2 weeks in Cancun through Expedia for $1,130.30. When I arrived after a long day of travel, they would not let my husband in the rental car center with me because the reservation was in my name. My Spanish skills are severely lacking, but my husband speaks fluent Spanish and is from Central America. I was an easy target once they separated us. Then they would not rent me a car unless I purchased the "mandatory" insurance "required by law". I fought with the guy for over an hour to not buy the insurance, but he wouldn't give me a car without it. I finally agreed to the cheapest option (what a joke). He said I was lucky to get a car at all since I did not prepay for it. Then he gave me a much smaller minivan than what I was supposed to get...for 7 people and luggage. According to Google the additional "mandatory" insurance in Mexico ranges between $10-$20 per day. THEY CHARGED ME $2,579.56! That's an extra $103.54 per day for insurance. Of course this is all quoted in pesos so you don't really know how much you're agreeing to. On top of all this, they put a $2,500 hold on my credit card. I complained to Expedia but since I supposedly "requested" the extra insurance, I'm out of luck to recoup any of my money. Thanks for nothing Expedia, not sure what the benefit of using your service is. Also, they'll try to get you to go to a timeshare presentation. AVOID DOLLAR, THRIFTY, HERTZ (AKA AVASA) IN CANCUN! You're welcome.

    Car Reservation made with Hotwire
    Heidi M.

We recently returned from an 8-day trip to Mexico, flying in and out of Cancun. Our trip was from December 24th to January 1st. Two days prior to our trip, we booked a rental car. The rental car deal was found on Kayak, and then booked via Hotwire with Dollar Rental Car. Our confirmed reservation was for an economy car at $22.48 per day for a total of $267.74 including all taxes, surcharges, and fees. Prior to departing for Mexico, I called Hotwire and Dollar to confirm the details of the reservation because we had heard stories about rental car companies not honoring reservations. Both the Hotwire and Dollar representatives confirmed the accuracy of the reservation and guaranteed there would be no additional fees and that we would only have to pay the total from the reservation. I had made a tentative reservation with Avant Car Rental for reference to pricing that also included all fees and insurance. Since the Hotwire rental was not a hot rate, we could have easily cancelled the reservation and rebooked with Avant Car Rental prior to departure. Given the current reservation made and included all additional fees, we continue with our Hotwire rental. Upon arrival at the Dollar Rental Car location in Cancun we were told that the reservation would not be honored, and instead it would end up costing $655.32. The daily rate was higher than what was quoted in the reservation, additional fees were added, and $26.00 per day was charged for liability insurance, even though the Hotwire website quoted liability insurance in Mexico as costing $13.00 per day, if required. We discussed these discrepancies with the Dollar staff in Cancun, but they were unwilling to honor the original reservation. We were told our only recourse was to raise this issue with Dollar and Hotwire customer service upon return to the US. To date, any efforts to resolve this issue with any of the customer service representatives have been met with silence. January 7th, I called Hotwire around 8:13AM to discuss the fraudulent charges. She called several times from different phones because the customer service agents continued to say they could not hear her on the other line. This seemed odd since all the phones were land lines. The first person she spoke to was named Andy. She explained the over charges that occurred and reviewed with the agent what the reservation charges should have been and reminded him that the reservation was not a "Hot Rate" booking. Andy put I on hold and when he returned, he reported he could not hear her and hung up the phone. I called Hotwire again around noon to speak with a supervisor. Violet answered the phone this time. She read over the previous agents notes and started her statement with "Hotwire did not do the billing for your reservation so this is not something Hotwire is responsible for." Although the billing aspect may be true, Hotwire was the booking company that provided the reservation at a given price. They are working with companies vouching for their integrity and business. I asked to speak directly with a supervisor. The line was disconnected in the transfer. I called Hotwire for another time and Jennifer answered the phone. I immediately asked to be transferred to a supervisor and was transferred to Jen. Jen reviewed the reservation, asked for reservation numbers for both Hotwire and Dollar, and asked for total charges that occurred. Jen stated she would need to contact Dollar car rental directly. I was placed on hold. Jen then came back on the line to confirm our Dollar reservation number because she reported it appeared the reservation was never fulfilled on Dollar's end. I repeated the Dollar reservation number, to which Jen confirmed on her end was the same. Jen then asked me to check my receipt and see if the reservation matched. Upon looking at the receipt, the booking number at the top was in fact different. This brought to my attention that not only were we overcharged, but Dollar had created the charges outside of our reservation. Dollar did not honor our reservation despite us showing them our printed reservation in hand that we had a reservation made by Hotwire prior to our arrival. We were not aware the reservation was not used until I made this phone call. Jen then proceeded to ask me for the booking number on my receipt. She said she was going to follow up with Dollar but since the receipt did not match the reservation, Hotwire may not be able to help. I was very upset by this statement. The reservation being done under a different booking number was done without either of our consent or knowledge. It now makes sense why Dollar said we would need to contact Hotwire and Dollar when we returned to the states to deal with the discrepancy. They knew they had changed the reservation and that Hotwire would not be able to manage our reservation. I was left on hold with Jen for 20 minutes with no response. Our conclusion is that she also became aware we were scammed.

My reservation L50305859C7, was booked to be picked up on April 2. While I was on my flight to the destination, our plane had to make an emergency landing which caused us to miss our connecting flight outside of my control. I called hertz corporate number and informed them of the situation and they informed me that they would notate it on my account so that my reservation would remain the same and I would just pick up at the airport 1 day late. When I arrived in Cancun on the morning of April 3rd, I explained the above information to the receptionist. They called the manager who said they would resolve it and just said to get on the shuttle and come to the hertz office. When I got there, I explained the above-mentioned details to the clerk who stated my reservation was in the process of cancelling and I could only start a new reservation: at 7 times the original booked rate. I asked to speak to a manager; a taller gentleman in his early 40s. He became immediately dismissive and said there was nothing he could do for me and began acting extremely rude and unprofessional. He then became rude and dismissive to my pregnant wife who was standing there with my 6 and 8 year old children. When I called him out on that he immediately became PHYSICALLY defensive and walked around the counter getting in my face in a manner as if he wanted to FIGHT me. All of this was in front of my pregnant wife who was sobbing and my children who were also crying at this point. He then had to be PHYSICALLY RESTRAINED by his co-workers. When I asked for his name he covered his badge and refused to show me. He was a larger Hispanic male with short hair in his 40s. My wife and children and I then left on foot to walk to find a different rental car company. I am absolutely disgusted with the lack of professionalism demonstrated by this "MANAGER". As a professional who works in law enforcement, I was appalled by his behavior. Stay away from this company.

Having finally given up any hope of a positive resolution, I'm posting online about my experience…read morebeing scammed at this Hertz location in the hopes that it will at least help steer others away from here. Here's how it works. You make your reservation online (in our case, we were pleased to reserve an SUV for 15 days for under $800, which seemed like an amazing deal). I had read on various forums that we should book directly with a local company, but I ended up deciding that it was worth it to go with one of the bigger name companies in case anything went wrong. It was a mistake. Once you show up to pick up your rental, one of two things happen. If you're lucky (like my Dad was, who was picking up at the same time as me), everything goes smoothly and you get your rental without any issue. If you're unlucky, they tell you that it is "illegal to rent a car without additional insurance" and tell you that you owe an additional $500+ on top of the $800 reservation, and that they will not give you a car unless you pay for this insurance. Not sure how you end up in one category or the other. It may be luck of the draw - maybe my Dad just ended up with an honest person checking him in, while I randomly ended up with the scammer. More likely, they saw that I was exhausted from a long day of travel with three young children and correctly recognized that I wouldn't put up too much of a fight, and also wouldn't call their bluff and just go to another rental agency. From subsequently reading about this scam on message boards, it sounds like if you really stand your ground and fight back, they will eventually give up and let you have the car for the price you reserved it for, but it can sometimes take hours and I definitely didn't have the capacity for that. Also, if you're thinking "my credit card provides rental car coverage", that's not going to help you. They just tell you that you can't have the car without paying additional money. Pointing out that my father wasn't required to pay the additional fee didn't make any difference (and honestly we didn't want to push too hard on that because we were glad he wasn't a victim of the same scam!) If this happens to you, you'll reach out immediately to Hertz customer service, but they will tell you there is nothing they can do until after the rental is completed, and to ask the Hertz staff about it when you drop the car off. You will follow instruction and ask the staff about the situation when you drop the car off. They will be very sympathetic and agree that what happened to you was wrong, but they will say they can't help you and you'll need to reach out to Hertz directly to resolve things. So, you'll reach out to Hertz. If you're like me, you will spend 4-5 months speaking to dozens of different customer service representatives trying to get someone to understand and care, but it will ultimately be for naught. Most of these reps were very kind, but they all said the same thing: "We spoke to the location, they said you agreed to the extra insurance, so there is nothing we can do". The fact that I was aggressively forced into signing for this insurance under threat of having my rental taken away did not seem to matter to any of these people. If you're thinking "but I have status with Hertz, I'm sure it will be different for me", I regret to inform you that my President's Circle status made no difference in any of this. So, five months after being scammed out of $500, I'm finally giving up and admitting defeat. My final act is to post my account of this experience on the internet in the hopes that it might save others from the same fate! I wish I had done more research in advance, as stories about this specific scam are all over the internet now that I know what to look for. I'm mostly disappointed in Hertz as a company for allowing this sort of thing to happen, and refusing to believe me or do anything to make things right despite literally dozens of emails that I've sent to different customer support members.

But at the Fox Rent A Car counter in Denver Airport, they added massive undisclosed fees and duplicate insurance, turning the bill into $797.68 total charges, with $553.97 extra charged to my card! They charged: * ATS $111.92 (airport shuttle surcharge - not in the Expedia quote at all!) * Duplicate liability insurance: RLP $148.48 + SLP $150.00 (I only agreed to one additional coverage for ~$140 as an international driver) * Inflated Concession Recovery Fee $54.59 (vs $8.99 quoted). When we arrived at the Budget counter in Cancún, the line of customers stretched out the door even though only six people were waiting to pick up vehicles. Despite having four counters open, it took nearly an hour to reach an agent. The delay was caused by constant disputes: every customer ahead of us was arguing with staff about a clear bait‑and‑switch, and many were visibly upset and raising their voices. After about 40 minutes, I asked my wife to hold our place in line and walked to a neighboring rental agency. An employee there urged us to rent from them instead, warning that Budget would try to charge us around $800. I explained that we already had a confirmed reservation for much less, so we decided to wait and see what Budget would do. When we finally reached the counter, the Budget representative told us we were required to buy their insurance or they would not release the car. We explained the multiple layers of coverage we already had, but he insisted it was not acceptable and presented a total of approximately $790. At that moment, it became clear why every customer before us was so angry. We objected and told him we could easily call for a ride and rent elsewhere for less. The agent said he needed to speak with his manager to "see what he could do." After about five minutes in the back room, he returned with a "best offer" of $669.08--still more than double our original confirmed price. Had fueling and insurance scams happen to us, after we avoided their false damage scam. 1. They charge you "required" additional insurance even though the reservation specifically states the price includes the required insurance ("Third Party Liability is included in all rental rates") and after the long wait for their shuttle to take you to a location far from the airport, you're stuck paying hundreds of dollars more just to get a car. 2. They lie about how much gas was initially in the car and then charge you an exorbitant amount for the (small) difference, even though we returned the car with more gas than when we received it. We carefully took videos of the outside of the car to ensure we avoid them scamming us for fake damage on return, but didn't think to take a picture of the gas tank display since it's written on the rental agreement, only for them to completely disregard that (like the ignored the terms in their own reservations). Seems like this gas scam is their (new) way of scamming those who they can't scam for fake damage. I had already paid for the car rental upfront on Wisecars for a full 12 days in Cancun MX which included CDW & TP insurance. When I arrived Ace (aka Movii) wanted a $400 USD ransome for what they claimed was insurance on the car in Cancun. This was about identical to the base rate I'd already paid beforehand for the car in the US. There was an extended "discussion", but of course I needed the car to get to Carmen and it was already dark outside. ACE/Movii simply wouldn't let me take the car without paying this ransome amount and a $1000 deposit (the family before me paid some amount more than that). ACE/Movii isn't listed on Googlemaps in the correct location, making it another outrageous event finding the place on the way back. Now, you know why.

I had a very frustrating experience with Europcar in Cancun…read more I booked my rental through Priceline and was quoted one price. Before arriving, I even called to confirm the deposit amount. However, when I got to the Europcar counter in Cancun, both the rental price and the deposit were completely different. After some back and forth, they adjusted it and I ended up paying a lower rental rate with a reasonable deposit, which I appreciated--but that was just the beginning. When I returned the car, they claimed that one of the wheel caps was damaged or missing. This made no sense because when I received the car, two of the caps on the left side were secured with zip ties, while the ones on the right side were not. It was clearly inconsistent from the start. Despite this, they charged me nearly 2000 pesos for a cheap plastic cap that is nowhere near worth that amount. What upset me the most was the misleading information about the insurance. At pickup, I was told I had full coverage and that I wouldn't need to worry about anything--whether I hit something or someone hit me, I was supposedly 100% covered. But when the issue came up, they said the insurance only covered certain types of damage and did not include things like tires or related parts. That was never clearly explained. Overall, the lack of transparency, inconsistent information, and unexpected charges made this a very disappointing experience. I would not recommend renting from this location unless you are extremely careful and document everything in detail before leaving the lot.
