He generously shared stories about the store's history, from when it housed the second freezer in North Carolina (the first was in Kinston!) to the days when families rented freezer space because most homes didn't have one. One of the coolest details? The original fireproof cases behind the counter, where customers' monthly account slips were once kept. Lee has even saved some of those old papers--tangible pieces of history you don't often find in a working grocery today. Along with the history, the service was outstanding. Lee was kind and welcoming, and Howie, a young employee, went out of his way to be friendly and helpful. That personal touch makes all the difference. Of course, you can't leave without trying their famous homemade specialties. We picked up some of their pimento cheese, chili and cucumber salad--they were absolutely delicious, fresh, and full of flavor.
