Owners are slumlords in Yuba City. Take ZERO responsibility for houses with mold, roaches, RATS…read more I really loved the vanity piece in the Chico paper about how dedicated Janet Balbutin is to 'wellness & health.' Wow - what a colossal joke! She can't even stop by the slum she's renting out and see the sick children that had to live there for years because the family had little money to move. I *did.* I saw the coughing and sickness. I saw the bubbles in the bedroom ceiling when the roof leaked and wasn't patched for months. I saw the black mold, the roaches, the RATS. We went over with cleaning vinegar and vitamin C and told them to "get out when you can." I see the "yard" that is completely infested with spider mites and weeds. I see the plaster patches and paint being slapped over the literal cracks in the exterior of the home. I still see black mold on the outside north face of the home and protruding from the attic vents. I see the rot of all the wood around doors and windows. I've had to hire pest control to stop the roaches from coming over to our property and remediation for the mites multiple times. I saw 3 cars being moved to the street so that the Balbutins could avoid paying for towing themselves. They did the same with shopping carts full of trash - left them at the sidewalk so that the city and the police would have to take care of it instead. In short, I have no idea how the Balbutins have such a stellar reputation in Chico. Here, in Yuba City, their name is scorned and uttered in sentences like, "When is the city going to take that house from Balbutin and tear it down??" "How could a family with all that money make Yuba City deal with their trash?" In fact, a printout of the vanity piece from the Chico paper was given to me by a neighbor with the comment, "Can you believe this? Obviously, they don't care about people at all!" as she nodded toward the slum next door. So, if you don't mind taking medication from people who can't take the time to visit - let alone care for - a property they own in YEARS, go ahead. But I certainly wouldn't risk it!

They aren't very visible, although located right next to the street I had no idea what type of items they sold. Going in just before Christmas, I found them to be an adorable gift shop with lots of ornaments and easy gift options for women. There wasn't really anything outside of the little Thomas Kincade gallery that could be given to men, IMO. They had some adorable and inexpensive jewelry, lots of scarves and purses including those crazy Miche bags that have the changable outer portion so you don't have to transfer the contents of your bag every time you want a new look. They had a handful of bath & body type products and a rather extensive collection of Yankee candles, and a variety of cute knick-knacks & tiny throw pillows with silly phrases, and a handful of wine bottle toppers. I could have knocked out quite a few of the girls on my Christmas list at Dove's had I known they existed during my shopping frenzy, but I doubt that I would have successfully got anything for the men on my list. As for my $25 gift certificate, I bought two pairs of "reversible earrings", and a few really cute ornaments, and probably only had to throw in $4 additional. I'm still trying to sell my husband on a $45 knick knack that was just too perfect for our house. Most things were pretty reasonably priced, if you ignore the Kincade gallery part. I don't think they have a regular website, but they have a facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Doves-Boutique-and-Gallery/101958

They also have a cute selection of fairy garden accessories :-) hope they can stay in business in a small town.

Sadly, I feel the need to lower my rating due to a particularly disappointing experience. I purchased an item for my son for Christmas that he thought was authentically old and historical. We went half on it as it was spendy. Immediately after purchase I brought it out to him in the car (he was staying with our dog) and had him look at it (we had seen it the day before in the case in the store) and now in the sunlight, he realized that it didn't hold any historical value as it was a modern replica. We are learning here. Not even two minutes later, I went back in to explain our disappointment and asked to return it. I had paid cash so it would have been easy. I was met with some pretty cold vibes and told in a cold and final tone that there was nothing that could be done. That was it. No exploring options, no conversation and no sense of human connection. There were 2 other employees watching this unfold and nobody said anything and it was really a weird vibe forming. I was so uncomfortable. I went on to explain that my son had used part of his own money and this was for Christmas. He worked hard for 2 months to earn this and had a special place waiting in his historical collection for it. This was one of his main gifts and a financial sacrifice for us this year so this was especially difficult to hear. I could understand if this was a genuine antique and I'd taken the object home for 24 hours and then come back but it wasn't, and I literally just paid for it. I felt truly crushed upon leaving this store. I'm not sure how much of the bad taste was left behind by the policy itself or by the cold and angry seeming demeanor of the shopkeeper. I didn't feel addressed as an important customer, more like a repugnant annoyance to be gotten rid of. I left feeling like I'd done something terribly 'wrong'. We want to keep coming back but that was one of the worst experiences in a small town that we love and had hoped to keep supporting.
