Sometimes I enjoy browsing stores like this, and sometimes I don't. It depends a little on my…read moreframe of mind and a lot on the unique nature of the items carried. Elegant Relic is both a home furnishing store, with a fair mix of redone antique items and modern equivalents. But they also have a cute clothing boutique that has some unusual items. There's a vintage vibe to everything. Maybe it's the subdued lighting, the scented candles and the hardwood floors, but everything is well displayed and draws you in. The clothing in the upstairs area (hen feathers) has a bohemian feel with mostly unstructured garments, but that might be owing more to the time of year than anything else. Although I didn't find anything I had to have, it was nice change of pace. The owner directed me to quite a few items on special and owing to her salesmanship skills, nearly had me buying it all. She wasn't pushy about it, though, and that itself was pretty remarkable. For the most part though, when I preferred to browse without a sales person following me around, the Elegant Relic staff let that happen. It's not a particularly inexpensive store, but they are consistent other stores of this kind. Elegant Relic does have something in nearly all price points though, and enough to let me find a nice gift without breaking the bank.

Hen Feathers had some unique women's apparel but it was exactly that, women's apparel. I feel as if many trendy women would love to shop around on the top floor. As far as the bottom floor, there were some interesting quote boards and other wall accessories. This was one of my last stops as far as antique stores in Mebane so I didn't really check the prices.

The store is massive and carries used books of every genre, as well as gently-loved puzzles, Funko characters, Squishmallows, toys, vinyl, movies, board games, CDs, video games, etc. It's a really fun place to browse and it has something for just about everyone. The store is organized pretty well considering how much inventory they have. My only complaint as a buyer is that most items are overpriced. For example, a used paperback copy of TJ Klune's House in Cerulean Sea is $17 and a lovely used puzzle I was looking at buying was $15. I would rather support McKay's than big-box stores or Amazon, but in this economy it is also hard to justify spending $5 - $10 more for a used version than I would a new one elsewhere. That being said, every now and then, I find a really good deal at McKay's. I purchased a paperback copy of Less by Andrew Sean Greer for 25 cents, which made my day. Selling books here can be slightly disheartening. I recently took in a stack of 18 books, including a popular hardcover which was being sold in the store for $17 at the time, and I only received $13 in store credit for the entire stack. I am not sure how this compares with other stores that buy used books, but in the future I will probably only sell items that I would have donated anyway so that any store credit, no matter how little, feels like a little bonus.

Do be prepared to be sold non working electronics and denied a refund for not having the box it was in. (Even with a receipt). Which made me end up buying 2 ps2 slims for around 100 each. But other than that I have found some incredible things here and have spent a lot of money lol

Oh hindsight, you deviant delinquent you. From the overly slanted lines of the side parking to the top 40 hits resonating from the acoustically refined speakers, I should've known something was wonderfully amiss. I browsed the aisles one by one, each end cap serving as an expertly crafted forward to the aisles classic novel. Canned foods galore, prophylactics perfectly positioned, and Holiday sundries plentiful, I began to fear my bank account, unlike my enthusiasm would soon be drained. Whilst holding back tears, I placed nearly all of my selections back on their respective shelves. Hoping that I, a mere customer would be able to re-display them as impeccably as they once were by the stock boys. Nay, stock artisans. As my journey throughout this store that humbly refers to itself as "general" drew to a close, I had selected one item that I deemed worthy of absolutely draining my Swiss bank account. A candle with the branding of "Truly Living", so fine that simple glass itself couldn't contain it. Made of iron cast by the finest smiths in all of Mebane. The wax contained in this vessel was high maintenance to be sure, but what set it apart from the herd was that it knew it's worth. Yes, this was an absolute vixen of a candle, a siren of scent. Flaunting its alluring smell contained in a miniature cast iron skillet, this seemingly innocent mold of wax knew what it was doing to me. Even as a man of very discerning taste, I can't deny, I liked it. Fast forward, it's just past sundown. Mere hours after I had fatefully exited the haven known as "Dollar General", I lit the candle. How bold I was to set fire to this masterpiece, would you set fire to an original Picasso? No, no, you haven't the gall to do such a thing, but I'm no ordinary being. Perhaps this is the dilemma the artist intended. Create a piece of art that appears as though it's to be set on fire, but sculpting it so beautifully you would never dare. Clever indeed, my sweet, sweet anonymous candle maker. I accepted that dare. As soon as the wick caught fire, my heart was also set ablaze. The smell of apple cinnamon pushed absolutely all feelings aside, save for bliss. For the first time in my life I was truly living. So suddenly I, as all mortal beings inevitably do, had to enter a slumber. Oh yes, how I yearned for the sweet sand of the night man to be blown into my sight receptacles. Bitter reluctance reared it's ugly head with its insistence of safety, I knew what must be done. With the gust of a thousand winds, I blew out the oh so unfortunately mortal flame. As if a volcano covering the isles of Hawaii in scorching lava, wax encrusted the finish of my coffee table. My heart then became as dark as the room the candle had once lit and yet another unremovable stain was added to my soul. The wax has now all but faded, but as an angel unseen, is all around me.
