Many of the things I purchased expired 2+ months ago, so I'll begin there. I'm normally good at…read morechecking labels, but it's sad that I have to sift through every single product to find food that isn't expired. -Deli is atrocious, catch them before they pre-close around 4pm and pre-cleaned their slicer) -Meat. I can manage without produce bags, but you absolutely need bags for dripping, raw meat. (Carry hand-sanitizer, I informed the checkout employee there's raw meat on the scanner due to no meat bags- they did nothing- so not much you can do about the people checking out before you if they've left raw food) --I no longer buy meat here. All of this without getting into the scale/weights of their meat consistently being off when I did. -Produce. You'll be able to find decent produce, however, there will always be a few veggies/fruits on your list you opt to get somewhere else (bruised, way-past rotten, the "sale" lettuce and produce needs to be on sale a week prior) These leaky, rotten products will usually be placed front and center too. I know this goes with anywhere that towers their produce in a pyramid, but maybe take out those first few rows of fruit that have clearly been bouncing off onto the floor all day. Avoid the plastic wrapped produce in the foam trays you can't see the back of-- almost always rotten, mushy on the back & intentionally hidden so they don't have to mark it as sale. -It looks like they've spent a lot of money upgrading the security system connected to their carts, but forgot to upgrade the actual carts themselves. It seems like every other time I visit, some old lady is locked in the doorway, cart jammed, theft siren blaring, all because it's clearly malfunctioning (hey, as long as those thieving old women aren't running off with their heavy cart full of cat litter right?) All around just not a good look. -Parking. This place had the audacity to repave their parking lot without increasing the size of the lanes, so it's just as chaotic, compact, and unpleasant as usual. As I was leaving, a woman was almost hit by a car backing out near the cart return! Just get rid of the pregnancy/veteran spots-turn them into handicap (injured veterans and pregnant women can, and often do, get a handicap tag if needed) This would increase the amount of accessible spots without the weird "This spot is unofficially for a particular KIND of disabled person!" message. It's tacky. Like a fake service dog for parking spots. I really can't recommend other places in the area, I'm sure that's how they've been able to stay afloat. I'm keeping my fingers crossed the Super Target rumors are true, at the least, it may incentivize management to return their attention to this location.

The prices depends on what you buy, some are more expensive than at Walmart, but some are cheaper. If your kids want a toy, don't buy it from DG. A question for fellow shoppers at Dollar General -- what would you do in this situation?…read more I ran into an interesting situation while visiting rural Hillsboro, Missouri. I'm originally from St. Petersburg, Florida, and it raised some questions about store policy and ID verification. Here's the situation: * I flew using my U.S. passport, so I didn't realize my driver's license had expired. * When I went to buy cigarettes, the store said the ID had to be scanned. * My license wouldn't scan because it was expired. * I offered my passport, but they said they couldn't accept it because it can't be scanned. It made me wonder how others would handle situations like this. Scenario 1 -- You're the traveler You've just arrived after a long trip. You go into a store to buy a beer, cigar, or cigarettes and show your passport, which is the only ID you have. The clerk says: "Sorry, we can't accept passports because they can't be scanned." What would you do? * Ask for a manager? * Call corporate while standing there? * Walk out and try another store? Scenario 2 -- You're the customer in line watching it happen A traveler explains they only have their passport. Would you: * Speak up and explain a passport is valid identification? * Offer to help by buying the item for them? * Or stay out of it? Scenario 3 -- Limited options The cigarette brand I smoke -- Eagle 20's Red 100's -- is something I've only ever seen sold at stores like Dollar General or Family Dollar. In rural areas, that might be the only place nearby that carries them. So sometimes "just go somewhere else" isn't really an option. Scenario 4 -- You're the cashier You recognize the passport as a legitimate federal ID. You know the system can allow the birthdate to be entered manually, and the ID can be shown to the security camera. What would you do? * Follow the strict scan-only rule and refuse the sale? * Manually enter the birth date after confirming the ID? * Call the manager for guidance? And what if your manager then tells you: "Corporate just called. We need to accept passports even if they can't be scanned." Would that change how you handle the situation? I'm genuinely curious how others see this. Policies are important, but sometimes real-life situations fall into gray areas. So what would you do in any of these scenarios? --- Final thought about this specific store I also want to be honest about the experience itself. One manager at this location showed the kind of professionalism and customer respect that represents what Dollar General says its customer service should be. She calmly listened, understood the situation, and explained how the passport could be manually entered in the system. I truly appreciated the respect and professionalism she showed. Unfortunately, that experience was very different from what happened with the assistant manager and 1 young clerk working today. The interaction felt dismissive and unnecessarily hostile -- including being told to leave the store and given the impression that returning might result in being trespassed or having the police called. Customers should never be told two completely different things by the same store. One employee says the passport is acceptable, another says it can never be used, while a manager explains it can be used but only in one specific circumstance. Policies should be clear, consistent, and applied with basic respect for customers. If a passport is acceptable identification in one moment, it shouldn't suddenly become unacceptable in the next. At the end of the day, this isn't about cigarettes. It's about training, consistency, and the basic principle that every customer deserves to be treated with respect.
