They have a nice deli and many products that are made in house. I have recently become especially fond of the Bleu Cheese Salami that is made in house; that stuff is killer! Cashiers here are always friendly. The grocery store is always clean, well stocked and a popular pick for locals and tourists. Definitely oozes the small town and communal vibe. Postings at the entrance of the store are always fun to read and keep up with the latest happenings in town. I hope Ely Northland is around for a while because it is absolutely a staple in Ely's community.

When I got back to my car Honda 2000 I noticed that the sign Tire low pressure was still on. I asked them to fix it. They said it will disappear after 20 minutes of driving. After two days of driving the sign was still on. I went back and the Manager offered help. He sat in my car with some book and some small equipment which he connected to the car. After 10 minutes I gave up. Obviously he didnt know how to eliminate the sign. I went home, open Youtube and got instructions how to calibrate it. It took me 10 seconds to fix it. He's got to be European or something, judging by his strange shoes and the way he carries that stylish man purse with confidence. And you're intrigued. How did this man get here... on a dirty city bus with all of these people, who are clearly not as worldly and dashing as he is? That's what the Natural Harvest Food Co-op is like. Now, don't get me wrong. I don't think Virginia, MN, is the equivalent of a dirty, stinky bus. There are hard working, genuine, honest people there. The thing is, they eat at McDonald's and consider "organic" to mean that the chemicals used weren't disallowed by the FDA until the 1990s. Natural Harvest Food Co-op just doesn't fit the profile is what I'm saying here. And, yet. There it is. A natural food co-op in the middle of a small heartland town. It's an anomaly I was glad to find when my family went looking for organic milk and healthy snacks while camping nearby. Five stars for the vast array of choices, the friendly staff, and the fact that it blew my flippin' mind to find it there.

This is a century-old business, but it provides the essentials you need to live in the area. They…read morenot only sell groceries, but gardening supplies, electrical supplies, plumbing supplies, automotive parts, gasoline, maps, rubber boots, etc. Think of it as an old-time general store (in fact, the current building has that as its sign), and you get the right idea. The only down sides are the cramped aisles and small variety -- they have a lot of products, but not many different brands, as fits their patrons' needs. The staff are friendly and helpful, though, so I strongly encourage a stop. If you are in the area, I recommend buying a Superior Forest map at the co-op. They cost around $10 (I got a waterproof one), but they will show the trails and dirt roads that will help you figure out where things are. On-line maps are not reliable at placing things in this part of Minnesota; for example, this co-op is actually a mile or two south of the bridge over the Baptism river.
