Westside

It seems the Serendipity Shoppe must have relocated since the reviews of a few years ago…read more Serendipity is not in the Blackrock area. It is located within the First Presbyterian Church at the corner of Wadsworth and Pennsylvania. The entrance is on Wadsworth, but there is parking available via a driveway on Pennsylvania. Additionally, there is handicap access available. If needed, call from the parking lot and one of the volunteers will come to escort you to the code-required elevator. Okay. Now that we know where Serendipity can be found, what can we expect within? At least one serendipitous find. For instance, last Saturday my daughter, just prior to attending a graduation party, found a graduation card there, obviating the need to stop again to buy a card. That could not have been more serendipitous. Okay, okay. Imagine a thrift store and an antique store got married and had a baby. Serendipity? But, of course. You won't find clothing, as a rule. Not saying never, but Amvets and Buffalo City Mission have clothes. At Serendipity you will find collectibles of myriad types, books, jewelry, lamps, dinnerware, pottery, home décor, eclectic gifts. Perhaps a hat. Possibly a shawl. Books are nicely shelved and categorized. Every other thrift store I have been in could take a lesson. I had planned to return and take some interior photos before reviewing; seeing as the location seemed to be in question from past reviews, however, I decided to post now, make the location clear, and return at some later date with more photos. The address above is correct: One Symphony circle. Phone 716-248-0232. ALL proceeds benefit people living with HIV/AIDS. Donations are always welcome -- saleable items, as well as cash. The charity is The Aids Plus Fund of WNY, a 501c non-profit. On Facebook, look for Serendipity Thrift Shoppe. Several photos there, too. And they do accept credit and debit cards, as well as cash.

Service was lacking, a bit pricey for second hand items donated. A lot with no history to them…read more Just nothing to brag about honestly.

Main Street

Family Dollar is a discount chain store with discounted prices on a number of items…read more This particular store is across from the Utica Metro Rail Station and is in one of the most poverty stricken areas of Main Street. The store requires bag check-ins when you enter, and the store is laid out in such a way that it feels like a maze....I'm assuming to make it difficult for a shoplifter to bolt from the store easily. Decent prices on bottled water and in the snack food sections, perfect for a snack run if I'm not hungry for Subway or another dinner. Being the only real local store to that area, it's BUSY most of the time, but the cashiers work their hardest to keep up with the traffic in the store. Definitely will return, since it's so convenient if I have a lengthy connection time, and sometimes if I'm in a hurry.

I've been here three times. The first I came in, I was looking for birthday decorations, was…read moredisappointed in their supply as well as the cleanliness of the store so I told myself I would not come back. The second time I was here, I was looking for magnets, they did not have any and then I remembered why I told myself I wasn't going to come back here, the store is not kept clean and has a bad smell. I made the mistake of going in there a third time so I figured if I write a review, maybe it will stick in my mind not to come here. Don't get me wrong, this place has a lot of different things, but they are not for a dollar. In fact, the majority of the items in this store are well over a dollar. I came here hoping to get some supplies for my bathroom and kitchen. I needed a garbage can but they were selling them for $16 and they weren't anything special. I could have bought a better garbage can for the same price at Target or Walmart. I needed dish towels but they did not have any for a dollar. The cheapest ones they sold were $4 and they felt VERY rough. Laundry baskets cost $7, dish racks cost $10, odor eliminators cost the same as Wegmans charges. The store is set up in a very strange fashion. There is a blockage right when you walk into the store, so the entire place feels like you are trapped, it's very tight. There is a sign on the front door that says you need to leave your purses at the cash register before you begin to shop around. That'll never happen, I'm not a fan of that rule and therefore have never obliged. My purse is mine, thanks. Ultimately, I did not see any good deals here that would make me want to come back.

None of the workers talked to us until we asked them a question and then they offered us their thoughts on our outfits and was much more visible and approachable. There's a really good selection here. The men's section is pretty much two-three racks. Which was disappointing. There's a ton of quality options and even better when you come during one of their sales. Came during their pink and blue sale. 50% and 30% off of their clothes. There's boots, hats, jeans, dresses, jumpers, night gowns, slits, lingerie, jackets, jewlery and more. A lot of cute things. There's about 5 different rooms for you wander around. Fitting room is in the back of the store. There's 4 I believe. There wasn't a great range of sizes. The entrance is hidden however. You need to walk down a semi ally to get to the store. I didn't see any signs on the street. There was a small rack of clothes on the sideway which let me know that I was in the right area. Parking is on the street. Depending on the time of day, it could be easy or you'll be walking a few blocks. If you're parking on the main street, make sure you pay for parking during the week because parking enforcement are always around.

This is the first review I've written in years, but I needed to say it because other customers…read moreshould be prepared for what they may encounter at this business. From 2020 on we used to get food, snacks, beer and other stuff here very regularly...like three times a day sometimes. We got dinner from here at least three times a week and we loved it. At some point a new owner took over and a lot things went downhill. We eventually had to stop going there all together because of all the mistakes and lack of accountability. We recently tried them again and was happy with the food. Well, that was short lived. The last three times we've placed an order online it hasn't even been started by the time they said it would be ready and we have to wait. In addition to that, it has been totally wrong with missing items each time. It happened again this morning, our order was missing two orders of hash browns. I called the listed number in an attempt to get a refund (because this is the third time and it's adding up) and it's off the hook, busy signal. This isn't new. The kitchen literally takes the phone receiver off the cradle so that they won't receive phone orders. My husband has witnessed it in person. Apparently they don't want to cook. Since the renovation the phone is digital, but they still turn it off. This has been happening since the new owner took over and he won't do anything about it. This is strange to me. Doesn't he want business? Anyways, sorry for the long review. We can't get food here anymore (again) because times are rough (again again) and I'm not going to buy from a shop that won't refund for wrongly prepared or even completely missing items. Bye Elmwood Market (AGAIN, out of chances)!
