It's important for a woman to trust her hairdresser. I know one girl who despite living in the…read moreMidlands, travels all the way up to Chester to get her hair done. Thankfully, the only hairdressers my girlfriend trusts work in Vangelis, which is just down in Bearwood. One rare occassion we both had a day off I ended up in there reading the paper whilst she had her hair done. It's a clean and pleasant, functional place - it's not the flashest salon in the world, but it's not stuck in the 1980s either. The ladies who work there - it does seem to be all ladies - appear to know what they're doing. The girl who did my girlfriend's barnet wasn't particularly chatty, but nor was she the false, inane wittering kind of hairdresser. I was just left alone in the corner untroubled with me paper. I think the whole thing cost somewhere between £30 and £40 for a trim.

Not long moved to B'Ham so was literally looking for a haidressers on my bus route. I had been to…read moreVangelis before and paid £30 for a wash, cut and blow dry. As I was very happy with the result I rang again this morning just for a quick, dry cut, trim with Anna only to be told that would be an extortionate £20!!!!! When I asked the young lady on the phone why it was £20 when I had previously paid £30 for a wash, cut and blow dry, all she could rudely say was"well that's how much it is"!!!!. Needless to say I will never be going back there again which is a shame as I thought I had landed lucky and found a good hairdresser that I would have continued to use for years to come. Vangelis - maybe you need to revisit your pricing structure?

James Stuart isn't the kind of place you just happen upon - situated in suburban Knightlow Road…read moretucked away from the more popular Harborne high street, it is the kind of place that is recommended by a friend of a friend... and that is how it happened for me. That was three years back, and even though I now live outside of Birmingham, it is well worth the trip back every time my hair starts to feel out of control! The interior of the salon is neutral and modern, the greeting on arrival is always friendly. A nice stack of glossy magazines to read while you wait, and a welcome offer of a drink. My stylist was a refreshing change to the uniformed young trendies who used to cut my hair in bland city centre salons, where you'd think you were treating yourself, but always ended up with something not quite 'you'. The key here is that they listen to what you want, and somehow know what suits you and your hair. I had my wedding hair done here, and trouped my bridesmaids in too, so sure was I that the right look would be found. For classic styles this is THE place. Over the years I've spoken to my fair share of hairdressers about their holidays, and experienced the awkwardness as you try to work out what to say next above the din of the blow dryer. Not so here. Conversation flows easily, and I always leave feeling on cloud nine, not just because I'm delighted with my hair, but I feel so up-lifted having received a stream of non-stop compliments and thoughtful comments about whatever it is that is on my mind at the time. Fantastic! The salon is very reasonably-priced. I pay £24 for a cut and blow dry. Do remember cash or cheque book though - as yet they don't take credit cards or Switch.

BEST SALON IN BRUM BY A MILE!!! Astral Bodies in Great Barr…read moreisn't just your average high street salon. It's cooler, chicer and unbelievably more affordable too! This place caters for everyone guys, gals, kiddies, young, old, glamour pusses, the more conservative and the more cutting edge. Decor-wise it's trendy, minimalist and, above all, immaculate. In short, it's a place that as soon as you walk in instantly inspires confidence. You know you're going to walk out of here looking and feeling great! The ambience in the hairdressing section is funky, the mood and music young and upbeat. On my first visit I'd booked in for two appointments with the first being a wash, blow dry and style with head stylist Liann. This girl is at the top of her trade and I would recommend entrusting your hair in her hands to anyone! After all, she manages to tease my lank, lifeless locks into beautiful, bouncy curls with a gorgeous golden sheen. And that's no mean feat believe me! You'll never go thirsty or bored here. Refreshments are on tap throughout the whole process as is the friendly and personal service. Having your hair done here feels more like having a cuppa and a chat with friends! The second appointment I'd booked in for was a Swedish massage with head beauty therapist Laura McKay. The treatment area which adjoins the hair salon area has a blissfully tranquil and calming vibe. A perfect refuge for the tense, stressed out, shattered or heavily hungover amongst us and let's face it that's most of us, most of the time! I can quite unequivocally say I was thrilled with the results! Laura clearly knows her stuff and is keen to share her expertise as she asked me many questions on skincare, lifestyle, diet, moods and sleep patterns. She was immediately able to highlight one of my major problems digestion (I suffer from bloatedness and slight indigestion). The treatment began with an all-over body brush to exfoliate and boost circulation. This was followed by a heavenly massage a mixture of lymph drainage and conventional Swedish using essential sweet-smelling oils and wonderful hands-on manipulation. The treatment focused on increasing oxygen flow in the blood whilst relasing toxins from the muscles and was a pure pampering as well as therapeutic experience! I would wholeheartedly recommend it! My brilliant therapist was able to pummel away all the tension and discomfort in my tight muscles leaving me, as well as my skin, feeling wonderfully rejuvenated. More to the point, the cramps, bloatedness and general feeling of discomfort in my stomach more or less disappeared. AND the dreaded dimply area around the top of my thighs looked less conspicuous! Definitely worth returning for that alone! At the end, I was left to relax and reflect for ten minutes in a lovely warm towel with a revitalising cup of peppermint tea and an overwhelming feeling of calm. Would I go back? In a heartbeat. At just £35, for a full hour of relaxation and reinvigoration, and just £25 to have hair like a (blonde) Cheryl Cole, I certainly didn't break the bank and felt the benefits for a long time afterwards.
