James Stuart isn't the kind of place you just happen upon - situated in suburban Knightlow Road tucked away from the more popular Harborne high street, it is the kind of place that is recommended by a friend of a friend... and that is how it happened for me. That was three years back, and even though I now live outside of Birmingham, it is well worth the trip back every time my hair starts to feel out of control!
The interior of the salon is neutral and modern, the greeting on arrival is always friendly. A nice stack of glossy magazines to read while you wait, and a welcome offer of a drink. My stylist was a refreshing change to the uniformed young trendies who used to cut my hair in bland city centre salons, where you'd think you were treating yourself, but always ended up with something not quite 'you'. The key here is that they listen to what you want, and somehow know what suits you and your hair. I had my wedding hair done here, and trouped my bridesmaids in too, so sure was I that the right look would be found. For classic styles this is THE place.
Over the years I've spoken to my fair share of hairdressers about their holidays, and experienced the awkwardness as you try to work out what to say next above the din of the blow dryer. Not so here. Conversation flows easily, and I always leave feeling on cloud nine, not just because I'm delighted with my hair, but I feel so up-lifted having received a stream of non-stop compliments and thoughtful comments about whatever it is that is on my mind at the time. Fantastic!
The salon is very reasonably-priced. I pay £24 for a cut and blow dry. Do remember cash or cheque book though - as yet they don't take credit cards or Switch. read more
