I've had my hair coloured, (that's the gentleman's word for it), before and I've often found it a bit annoying when the colourist is bobbing between heads of hair, rushing from one side of the salon to the other, applying dye to someone's hair, then drying someone else's, then foiling another's, all at the same time At Julias Scissors, Jeni has the colourist all to herself. She's relaxed throughout and the treatment is at around half the price of elsewhere.

It is irrational and ridiculous and it has also meant that I've sampled a good few hairdressers over the years and never been able to settle on one. Until now. I feel relaxed whenever I go in, which is a great start. There's always a smiling face waiting to help behind the desk. The cuts are good value, and if you go on a Tuesday they are even better value as they have a special deal on. I have no time for fussy styles or complicated fashion cuts but that doesn't mean I don't want to look good because I'm vain enough to care about my appearance. I get a great cut from Helen. It always looks good and I don't feel pressure to ask for the latest style, colour etc if I don't want to. On the other hand I'm sure they can do all of this with ease should I change my mind. They also offer a great value service for kids. A haircut for a fiver and a choice of lolly at the end-what more could you ask for?

As he was reluctant to go anywhere too dainty, I persuaded him to go to these no-frills, no-nonsense men's barbers in Mere Green. I was there to hold his hand. Run by Kevin for many, many years the boys and men of Four Oaks have long been coming here for their short back and sides. Busby's doesn't pretend to be anything it isn't, tapping into the fact that most blokes and kids don't want to be pampered or fussed over, all they want is a good quality haircut and then to be on their way. Kev broke out the clippers and did the business. It was the neatest my husband's hair had looked in ages, and even he had to admit the benefits of letting a talented Gents barber do the work for him. There were no balms, no lotions and no discussions about holidays, just a bloody good quality haircut.

But don't misunderstand, this is not a piece of nostalgia: here you will get a perfect haircut for a reasonable price. You don't last 30 years without it. A real Mere Green fixture. Recommended.

I thought they could easily pile me off to the work experience girl and allow her to dye my hair any colour of the rainbow! However luckily for me, they booked me in with a qualified stylist and also a great colour technician. I had a few ideas in my head which I rambled to them. They understood completely and gave their own creative ideas which I always love. The cut and colour were amazing, I was so impressed. I opted for having blonde bits pulled through the underneath and it looked gorgeous. I would definitely recommend. My stylist was Lee and colour technician Hannah.
