A sizeable group of us rocked up to D 'n' D on a Thursday eve to sample some more of what Manchester had to offer in the 'gourmet junk food' category. Tucked away down a back lane just off Cross Street and a stone's throw from the Town Hall, it's neon sign outside beckoned to us like an 'insectocutor' would to a fly (but in a good way). Head downstairs and through the doors at the bottom and you're met with a lowly lit, green interior with a fair few leather-bound booths. The menus had just been updated with a host of new options, so I was told, so it was a new experience for most of us (some of the group had eaten here before). We ordered drinks, which comprised mainly bottled beers and cocktails. I had a Kona Brewing Company's 'Fire Rock Pale Ale' - a Hawaiian beer which was pretty good indeed. They also had 'Big Wave Golden Ale' which I was told was also very nice. The cocktails that were ordered looked to be of a decent size too. Next it was the turn of the food. The vast majority of us went for hotdogs with side orders of fries (I opted for the 'Hunting Dog' - BBQ chicken, Swiss cheese and crispy bacon - with cheese fries which was deeelicious). A couple of the gang had pizzas which looked to be packed with cheese and toppings. For me though, this night was all about the hotdogs. The place was probably half-full when we were there so it wasn't as bustling as I imagine the weekend is, but the service was very good and I'm now one of their newest fans. Woof woof.

Once my boyfriend got wind of a restaurant specialising in pizza and hotdogs, it was only a matter of time before we ended up going there. (This is a man who remarks that he wants pizza on average once a day, and loves hotdogs probably more than the next person.) We went along on a Saturday evening at about 6.30pm. It wasn't hard to find having looked up where it was beforehand, though I can see how you might just walk past it if you didn't know it was there. We were greeted by a friendly member of staff, though I felt it was a little odd that they straight away asked if we had a booking. It didn't even really occur to me to book at this sort of place - I thought they might have gone in for the 'no bookings' trend. Nonetheless, the staff here were really friendly. As in, they seemed like genuinely chatty and nice people. I couldn't see any draught beer other than Budweiser and I decided I could live without that so I ordered a bottle of Longboard, which was quite nice. To share we ordered a hotdog, a Caribbean Dream pizza and a portion of naked fries. Which hotdog we ordered is a mystery to me right now - I vaguely remember it having crushed tortillas on top, and I can't find anything like that on the website so it might have been a special. I remember that it was tasty, though! The food was all good: arrived quickly and hot, good simple flavours, very decent price. The pizza didn't have any pineapple on it even though the menu stated so. (I'm not the hugest fan of pineapple on pizza anyway so decided not to mention this to the staff). Overall we had a big feed for a pretty small price. I will be returning when I just want some simple, tasty food in a comfy, friendly place.

Dogs 'n' Dough has been on my food radar for a while, after a colleague at work suggested that it might be up my street during one of our surprisingly frequent discussions about food. I finally got around to going earlier today during a trip to the Christmas Markets. When we got there, we genuinely had to ask whether they were open as I think we were the first ones in for the afternoon. This did mean that there was no wait for a seat. The venue is a slightly dark basement with lots of booths and an almost speakeasy vibe about it with the green tiles and secluded entrance which is actually on Bow Lane just off Cross St. The music playlist during our visit was pretty good too; rock based but not too heavy. Score. There were a good range of drinks without it being overwhelming, with several options in both red and white wine as well as a good choice of bottled beers and sodas. There were only three options for draught, though: Coors Light, Longboard Pilsner and the Long Hammer IPA. I went for a pint of the Longboard, which was a nice easy drinking pilsner. The others I was with went for the Long Hammer, as well as the Chenin Blanc and the Pinot Grigio which were all well received. On the food front, as someone who frequently has difficulty deciding on what to eat, the menu was chock full of deliberation. Do I want a dog, or do I want dough? I went for a hot dog - but which one do I want? There's a whole host of options ranging from a simple plain dog to ones piled high with fried chicken, chilli etc... In the end, I went for "The Cowboy": a hot dog with chilli, bacon, nacho cheese, jalapeños and sour cream. The dog itself was not some weeny frankfurter but a hefty bratwurst type sausage with a good bite and lots of flavour, so if you don't like thick skinned sausages maybe go for a pizza. The toppings were plentiful, though as a spicehead I wouldn't have minded a bit more kick in the chilli and a few more jalapeños piled on. Not that I was complaining, the chilli may have been mild but it was packed full of flavour and went well with the sour cream and cheese. The bacon added a crisp, salty hit to round out one of the best dogs I've had in a long time. The others in our party went for the No Way Jose and Philly Cheese Steak dogs, as well as a Pig Lebowski pizza. All of it looked great, and went down a treat. As well as the titular dogs & dough offerings, we got a portion of the naked and chilli cheese fries and some onion rings with chipotle mayo. The naked fries were hot, crispy and well salted - a simple side done well. The chilli cheese fries were the same, but with the chilli from my dog and cheese piled on. Despite the semi-liquid topping, though, the fries stayed crisp and were thoroughly enjoyable. The onion rings were huge and well cooked, and the chipotle mayo was great. The only downside to our visit was that they made a slight mistake with one of the drinks orders after the meal, when one of us asked for a diet coke and got a regular - but they fixed it as soon as we noticed without any issue so points for that. Also, I'm not sure whether it was just to keep with the general theme of the rest of the joint but the restroom was barely lit. It also could've done with a bit of a clean, but trust me when I say it was very far removed from the worst I've ever seen in Manchester. All in all, we had an enjoyable - and filling - meal and the prices are pretty reasonable to boot. I'll definitely be back again to eat my way through the Dogs side of the menu. And probably the Dough side too.

For some reason I had it in my head that Dogs n Dough was in the Northern Quarter so I was surprised to see a sign for it near the edge of Albert Square one day. I have been desperate to go to I dragged the Mr into town the very next day to try it out. I was not disappointed - this place is like a little underground heaven. It seemed really dark when you get down there but ours eyes soon got accustomed to the low lighting. The guy serving was super friendly and really helpful with food choices and sauce recommendations. They have a whole wall of hot sauce choices, perfect for my chilli loving boyfriend. We each had a hot dog then shared fries, onion rings and beans. All excellent and I can't wait to get back here for more as they have a new menu that's just launched.

Hiding down a small alleyway just off Cross St. is one of the best places for casual, 'I'm hungry' and 'feed me now!' eats. I've been to dogs n dough a good few times now and I love it here! It can be quite hard to find if you don't know where you're going but I think this almost 'secret' location stops the place from getting overly busy.. I'd hate it if I couldn't get a table! You go down some stairs and end up in a basement type restaurant which is quite dark and reminiscent of a very modern American diner with booths. The menu, like the restaurant name suggests, is either dogs or dough (Hot dogs or pizza) which is simple and I love the concept. There is a fantastic choice of both - with my heart always leaning toward the dogs. And that is saying something!! I've tried a few different hot dogs here - but the burrito dog is a must try! An amazing juicy bratwurst wrapped in a flour tortilla with chilli, guacamole, salsa and cheese - fabulous. The cheesy fries are a good shout too! It's messy, fun and tasty.. And reasonably priced too! No wonder I love this place.

After a long day at work and in need of a catch up, my friend and I headed straight for Dogs 'n' Dough on a miserable Manchester Wednesday. We went for one of the combinations on offer - 2 hot dogs and a bottle of wine for £20 - and were more than ready for the food we indulged in! First up was the savoury; I went for the burrito dog and wow, what a dog. Wrapped in a tortilla and served with chilli, guac, salsa and cheese, this was a little bit of something different. The flavours worked really well together and the wrap meant less mess! We also shared a portion of cheesy fries, which were perfectly cooked as always and devoured in moments. The came the real reason we had been counting down the clock all day - dessert pizza. Those two words may sound like they don't match but, trust me, they do. Nutella smeared on a pizza base and topped with 3 sweet options of your choice and one sauce, served warm, and you're ready to go. We decided (after a fair amount of deliberation!) on milk buttons, smarties and marshmallows with raspberry sauce. The marshmallows were simply amazing as they were gooey and melted, and the smarties provided a really nice crunch during bites! It was the biggest sugar rush in the world but totally worth it. We could barely drag ourselves out of the door but it had the desired affect. Happy diners once again.

We came here for a friend's birthday. This place was definitely trendy! A few steps down the alleyway off Cross Street, a cute sign helped guide us towards the pizzas and hotdogs. We're then led downstairs to what looks like a nicer version of the bar Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn kept meeting up in in True Detective but without the sad singer. There were deep green booths decked with vintage lampshades and a full bar! The food looked amazing but was a bit on the stodgy side and very carb heavy - not really my kind of thing. There was a monstrosity of a pizza with burgers on it! The food is fun and definitely worth a try if you're into this burger/hotdog/pulled pork endemic in Manchester. The BEST part of the night was the bar downstairs! The arcade games and pool tables! There are no draught beers downstairs but G and Ts were available so I was not bothered. You can book the pool table beforehand and all the games are free to play!

Another lads night out ..and this where we chose to dine. On entering a large menu can be spotted outside, having now known there were some veggie options we climbed down stairs. I was surprised, I thought it was going to ooze of an generic American diner but it was victorianesque with its walls covered in bottle green tiles. Seated at a large table the waitress shared out the menus. There were ribs, various burgers, pizzas and hotdogs..only veggie option I could see was a veggie hotdog and mac n cheese pizza (which is what I chose for £8). The guys ordered a meat platter with various types of fries, ones with meat and cheese and spicy. The milkshakes were reasonably priced and served in a large metal cup. Slurping away the consistency was perfect. Cocktails were also very strong and flavoursome I think I had smoke on the water. When my pizza landed I cursed slightly, it was massive. I pleaded with the guys to help me out but I could already see that they had the meat sweats. Like my friend we requested a doggy bag, (I have you know it took me three days to demolish it at home!) Overall a good chilled place to come as group. Reasonably priced with a good hip ambience (lots of music by Foo Fighters n stuff playing). It will be awhile before I come back as it is heavily meat orientated.

Hawaii 50 Hot Dog / Chilli Dog plus fries and milkshakes. This is a MUST go to kinda place!

Blink and you will totally miss this place, tucked away down a little ally way. Thank God my friends recommended this place to me. I'm totally a fan and cannot wait to visit again to try something different off the mene. I had the Chilli Dog and Fries. The hot dog was topped with beef chilli and drizzled with sour cream. It's the only place I have ever gone that is mostly about hot dogs and it's definately the BEST hot dog I have had. The portion size was right up my street as it was HUGE. I am definately one of these people with eyes bigger than there belly but with prices as good as they are offering, who cares. Great prices, great staff, the venue is beautiful, dark yet modern. Get yourself to Dogs n Dough soon for an absolute treat of a meal! No kids after 5pm and a Chocolate Milkshake is a must, be warned, that's huge too so don't drink too much before your meal arrives!

You would walk past this place if you didn't know it existed! Hidden down a small alley off Cross Street this place is an american foodie heaven. I first went here on a Friday evening to soak up my wine intake and on arrival we were seated at the bar to peruse (yet another) wine menu whilst they set a newly free table. We were soon seated and our drinks were prompt however I was so torn on the menu between two (calorific) hot dogs which sounded like a heart attack on a plate! Feeling like I deserved a treat as it was Friday I went for the Philly Cheese Steak dog which was served with Steak, fried onions, BBQ sauce, peppers and cheese! It was the tastiest hot dog i've had in years! Not being one to normally order a hot dog or make one at home so this was a real treat! The added extras blew my mind - how come i've never thought about the possibilities to make a hot dog exiting?! We decided to also share some sides of coleslaw and chilli cheese fries (my favourite) and they also lived up to my expectations. This place has true value for money with the hot dog only around the £7/8 mark it doesn't break the bank! If you haven't tried this place already you need to head for dinner one mind - and arrive hungry!

The old railway building. Thanks yelp for making me aware. They have a lunch special with a selection of burgers and a chicken sandwich for £10 (at the time of this review 07/2023). That includes a side of fries. I noticed every restaurant that you walk In the host will ask you about any allergies or intolerances. If you let them know you're they will let you know what to avoid. Or if they do not know they will send you a manager who knows. There must have been a huge problem with allergies and it is a great way to avoid it. It is, in the beginning, a bit annoying until you realize it is actually a good thing (I wonder if Mcdonald's to the same - I'll might have to try that). So I ordered the chicken burger with a breaded fried chicken breast some black pepper mayo sauce some salad, Onions, and a slap of avocado. WOW - the nicely tasting breaded chicken was fried to perfection and it was a really big piece without drying out. Good job! the "burner" was definitely the combination of chicken and that avocado spread mixed in With the black Peppercorn mayonnaise - an almost perfect bite. The bun was not too big to get in the way of tasting what's important all other ingredients have been fresh and am tasty the fries also fried to a crisp state without being burned. Hands down a surprisingly great burger. Oh, I will be back - the service was five starts as well quick, knowledgeable, and friendly!

We arrived early afternoon, after 1pm. The receptionist greeted us, and I asked if there were any tables available. There was not, but there were seats in the bar area, which we decided to take. We sat on an available high top and ordered our drinks and food at the bar. We ordered the Salomon entrée that came with mashed potatoes and green beans, and we added a side of mac and cheese, wings, and shrimps. The shrimps were a bit salty, but still okay. The Salomon was good, and so were the wings. For drinks, we had a virgin, Pina colada, and a strawberry/mint lemonade. Again, my lemonade was a bit too sweet, but as the ice melted, that helped dilute the sweetness. For Christmas day, the restaurant did not seem overly busy, nor was it too loud. Things have changed a lot over this period, the biggest difference is that the allergen menu is now on a QR code basis only, I think this makes it very difficult for patrons who might not have smart-phones etc, it is also reliant on a mobile signal, I was able to access the information quite easily, unlike at TGI's nearby location at the Royal Exchange Theatre, where due to faulty WiFi and no mobile phone signal, I couldn't access allergen information at all. I do think the restaurant looks good, the decor is kind of fancy, they do try to hide the fact they're located inside a busy railway station, but of course, you can't get away from the loud announcements from the train station, so this isn't a place you'd want to come for a celebratory meal unless you're interested in knowing which Avanti service is delayed, and which Northern service has a platform alteration. I ordered the Garlic chicken, with this being listed on the gluten-free menu, my food took quite a while to arrive, this did see the theme of my experience, the staff were super friendly, but the service was super slow, even just to get cutterly or water, especially considering only two other small tables were dining at the same time as me. I did have a problem with my food, I found the fries to be overseasoned, while the chicken seemed a little bland, other than the garlic I couldn't really taste anything, and it wasn't the best quality of meats either. The corn seemed to be buttered on one side, plain on the other, which was a shame as the chilli butter could have given it a nice kick. I did find this to be a little overpriced at £14.50, given the quality of the food. The staff were unable to answer questions regarding the loyalty scheme, and I was originally given the wrong QR code, I think this could potentially be a training issue, as the staff members were friendly, but it was frustrating when no one could answer questions I had, which I thought were pretty basic. I also think it is strange how they close at 5 pm, which seems far too early for a restaurant to be closing, right before the dinner rush. 2* - If you're in a rush to grab some food before your train, you might want to come here but with mediocre food at slightly high places, this isn't a place I'd want to return to if I wasn't travelling from Piccadilly.

Originally seeming to be named New Yorker Diner, it doesn't have a diner vibe, so instead is now presenting itself as American Street Food, serving burgers, waffles and chicken, gourmet burgers, and some other American sides too, as well as milkshakes and Belgian Waffles. It doesn't have a huge range, but what it has it does well. As you descend the steps into the diner itself, it's got that industrial look that most of the Northern Quarter is doing at the moment, complete with bare brick walls, wood cladding, and filament bulbs. Definitely not the Ed's Easy Diner style 50's American diner. Also, it's not a full service restaurant, but in fact a counter-service place with a dining area. The menu is simple but appetising, with some really tasty offerings and at a price that is very reasonable for Manchester City Centre, especially with some of the lunch deals available. I went to the counter and ordered the "American Boy" burger with fries and a Cherry Coke. The friendly staff member gave me a flashing/buzzing box similar to what you get when waiting for seating at big chain restaurants on a Saturday night, and said it would buzz/flash when my meal was ready for me to collect. Handy. The food was ready, and what I got was very tasty indeed. The burger, although not pink, was cooked through, but still juicy, and the trimmings were perfect, although the 'Brooklyn Sauce' built up spice pretty quickly for me, so I'd probably skip that next time. The fries were really good! Properly hot and crisp, and seasoned perfectly meaning the sachets of salt I picked up were never touched!
