I really recommend Evelyn and her assistant!! I have a 2 lb yorkshire terrier girl who has some separation anxiety, and is rather fragile due to her tiny stature. I'm one of those "my dog is my child & my world, not *just* a pet" kind of people, and so I am very particular with where/with whom I leave my dog for any kind of care. Thus, I am so grateful & relieved to know and trust Evelyn to be so gentle and careful with her, as well as so tasteful in styling her-- for 3 years now, my pup always looks darling, smells wonderful, and is (most importantly) happy and healthy leaving the salon. We recently took in an elderly dog, and brought her in for what I think was her first ever trip to a groomer. They can take from 1-3 hours for a full body grooming appointment depending on how many knots your dog has and how big your dog is. The best thing is they always accommodate requests for the trim. It's extremely difficult finding a good dog grooming in NYC that's reasonably priced and doesn't have a months long waitlist. I got an appointment next day when I called up and was quoted 85$ for a full groom (cash only) and a 20$ dematting fee. They did a great job, my dog looked decent even though he had to be shaved because of the mats. The last time my dog got groomed (at a different groomer's), he come back with a bleeding ear (they had nicked it) and razor burns, so I was very pleased that Doggie Dearest did a really careful haircut and he didn't have razor burns or nicks. I highly recommended Doggie Dearest, the people working here seem really nice and professional and I'm glad my dog was in such good hands. read more

STAY AWAY! I don't usually write reviews on Yelp, but I had to this time because I love my dog and I want to make sure all other loving dog owners are made aware of this place. I just went to Doggie Dearest to have my dogs nails clipped. I left her there so that I could pick up some cash (they only take cash) and when I returned I notice black marks all over the leash (her leash also is leather and cost $50 and was now ruined). When I asked what happened they said that she bled and then blamed me saying it was because her nails were long. This scared me. I looked closer at her nails and she seemed to have bled quite a bit. When I tried to raise the issue to the owner she cut me off and told me to get out. She didn't let me speak. I responded, "you're being very rude." She said, "Yah, I'm rude, I'm a bitch. Now get out." I was shocked. Never have I been treated so poorly. I don't know about everyone else but this IS NOT the kind of person you should put your dog in the hands of. She obviously has some rage/anger issues and if I were you I would stay away! There are plenty of other places to go in the East Village, so choose one of them before Doggie Dearest. The irony is that the owner named her place after the movie, Mommy Dearest. If you're familiar, its a movie about an abusive mother...maybe not so ironic anymore? read more

They have handled my two Yorkshire Terrorists very well, and they always walk out looking handsome. Walked out. I just lost the oldest, Scooter at 16. Every time we visited Doggie Dearest, everyone has a big smile on their face. When we pick up the little guys, they still had a smile on their face. I know my little boys, and they are very very kind, but hated/hate having their faces touched. They bite if one gets to close with grooming tools. They worked magic! Evelyn is the only person I will trust with my dog. Recently more grooming places have cropped up in the neighborhood, but I wouldn't want to ever go anywhere else. In the past, I have taken my dog to more expensive, fancier places when I was in other parts of the city, only for her to shake uncontrollably when she walks in, and at times she came out with an eye infection or cuts on her skin. Although my animal will never "love" getting groomed, this is the best you can get! She loves Evelyn and the whole process only takes an hour, has competitive pricing and Evelyn can always fit us in. The best fact for me is that she doesn't use kennels! The animals (and owners) are treated with respect and my dog comes out looking and feeling wonderful. I took my 6 month old shih-tzu here for her first grooming and the woman did an excellent job. I asked her to try to keep the hair as long as possible, but agreed that if she found any matting in the fur that she could cut it shorter to get it out. I had tried to trim the hair around my puppy's eyes at home, but she got extremely upset and thrashed around making it impossible. I mentioned this to the groomer to warn her that the dog might be a bit tricky. Anyways, I got a text from the groomer right at the quoted hour that she was ready and when I went back to get her, she looked adorable and very clean. She was in a great mood and did not appear to be stressed out or anxious. The groomer did exactly what I asked for - kept the fur long, and trimmed around the eyes, tummy and legs a bit. The groomer was also very friendly and helpful giving me a few tips for taking care of her between her next appointment. It was very obvious that she loves dogs and my dog was very comfortable with her. Also, I have another adult shih-tzu who has had many, many groomings over the years, and I have had so many bad experiences with groomers that I am grateful that I found this place for my dog's first cut. I cant stress the fact that i have been looking for a groomer for about 7 months. My baby Max is not the friendliest dog. His anxiety makes him bark at anything and everyone. Many times i tried to take him to the groomers i get a phone call in less than 15 mins asking to go pick him up because Max is not allowing them to groom him. The groomers in Doggie Dearest were aware of Max's behavior problem and made him feel comfortable from the minute we walked in. They were able to groom him and cut his nails.
