Incredible food! Great menu, fresh ingredients beautifully cooked. I love this place. I am also…read moretold that it has an excellent Sunday lunch carvery, although I have never tried this so cannot comment with any authority. What I can say is that the food I have had off the menu board here is great. They also have a very nice selection of beers and the older seating area is beautiful with its stone walls and fireplaces. Allow plenty of time to get seated and served etc though as, like most places worth going, Ye Olde Mustard Pot can get busy around meal times.

We have eaten here several times before and always enjoyed the whole experience. HOWEVER, we ate…read morethere last night and it was appalling, it has obviously changed hands again, as it was not a patch on its former self. The menu was full of seasonal salads? in November? (it was minus 5 degrees outside, definantly not salad weather) We started with goat cheese salad with walnuts (no walnuts) and far to much raw onion, totally over powered the subtile flavor of the goats cheese and pate with a large salad garnish and only one slice of toast, which was sufficient for one of the two slices of pate given. Tomato and tarragon soup was nice. Followed by the mains of, Fish cake with selection of vegetables, this fish cake was deep fried and was ineadible, carrots over cooked, swede cubes and new potatoes, and off the specials board brandy braised steak. This was described on the board as 'To Die For' it was dry, over cooked, had no flavour and had no brandy in the sauce whatsoever, set on a bed of mash. We did however have a great bottle of red which we enjoyed. When we mentioned this to the waitress (who was efficient) we were told it was the chefs first day...Should be his last as well. It was such a dissapointment, we have loved the food and atmosphere here so many time before, but on a Sat Night to only have 14 people in the whole place speaks volumes, or maybe it was REM coming out of the sound system that was putting people off, definantly not the right backround music for 'fine dining' as much as I like REM.... Avoid this place like the plague, until they get there act together.

The bus service is every half hour from Holmfirth/Huddersfield but are not really reliable. A great place for a family meal though. But it would be only an occasional visit as opposed to a regular haunt

As a vegetarian there was an extremely limited choice. Two starters (both pastry) I chose a mediterranean veg pasty. this was very bland (forgot seasoning?) also very soggy with a great handful of green leaves and a watery spoonful of tomato sauce (it may have been just sieved tomatoes as there was no taste to it). for the main I had the other starter which was a goats cheese and caramelised onion tart, again with a handful of lollo rosso this time which is very bitter. (This tart was also very soggy) The veg (expensive extra charge) was very poor and the servings tiny. Never mind I thought the puddings might be better. No - a rock hard slice of cold treacle tart with ice cream. Sorry I won't go back. I don't mind the cost but expected the food to be good. The chef had offered to do a mushroom rissotto but as this takes a long time to cook and requires one to one attention I suspected it may not be fresh. Can anybody tell me of a restaurant that serves both non-veg (for husband) and interesting vegetarian for me.
