I shall go again whenever I'm back in the country. As its name indicated, it is on a lake, its setting one of complete tranquility, broken only bird song and the occasional splash of a fish in the water. The rooms are perfectly furnished and stylish. The bow-fronted dining room looks out across the grass to the lake, each table having its own window and view. The decor is light, the atmosphere soft, the furnishings subtle and playful, an unobtrusive display of the owners' refined and creative tastes. Each evening the restaurant offers a fixed four-course menu (thus saving diners the anxiety of choice) with the option of carefully selected, accompanying wines . The food I had was superlative (this is one of those rare Michelin starred restaurant) in creativity, ingredients, preparation and presentation. Whether it was venison in filo pastry, turbot on mountain lentils, or, in a crescendo of tenderness, three cuts of lamb from Lake Müritz, each course seemed to top its predecessor. The wines were bright and subtle in flavors, colors and contrasts. The service was so unobtrusive, the pace so relaxed, that the meal seemed to appear of its own accord. Dessert came with a Vermouth La Copa, which balanced two sherries like voices in a choir. If you stay overnight you have the added pleasure of breakfast, a quietly lavish spread of breads, cheeses, meats and fruits, gleaming jewel-like in the morning sun.

While Berliners are used to seeing Asians in their international city, it's not the case in Rerik. I did get a few stares but the worst was when the staff at Captain Flint said "NO FOTOS!" Oops. Guess only Asians take photos of their food? o_0 My fiancé has been here before and does not recommend the entrees. However, their fish sandwiches are FANTASTIC! We ate here 3x over the course of 4 days that we were in the area. And how can I not? these sammiches are cheap! It's best to grab these to go and sit at one of the benches outside and people watch. My fave is the Backfisch and it's only €2.50! the fish filet is fried nicely, flaky and has a smidgen of aioli and a single lettuce. Super simple, super filling! I also LOVED the very very sour Matjes (herring style) with raw onions. Intense flavors sure to give you bad breath ;-) The maritime décor of the restaurant is so fitting for the setting. But the name made me laugh since where else can you find an American sounding restaurant but in the middle of small town Rerik?! Good times.

Captain Flint is one of the few restaurants at the "Haff" which is a market place-like square in the middle of the town. Here you'll get traditional Northern German cuisine which mostly consists of some sort of (fried) fish, fried potatoes, and green salad with an undefined sauce. Solid food, nothing special - you'll get a good idea about what the folks eat here every day of the year. Portion size is okay (see pictures), and so is the value (Brathering mit Bratkartoffeln, 9 Euro, Matjesfilet mit Bratkartoffeln, 10 Euro). The dining room has a nice maritime theme and it's pretty cozy in there. Be prepared that you'll eat with a lot of older folks - most of them seem to be bored to death. Funnily enough, they don't really talk to each other but will stare at you while you finish your meal. Oh Baltic Sea, you are so joyful and optimistic.
