    Do Division

Summer just started cause I'm in the Division street fest. Weather is perfect, it not too crowded this Friday night, the band is playing - what's not to like? We're back to Normal? People watching here is always interesting. What's cool about this is starting from Ashland ave going west before you even hit the fest on Damen is rows and rows of restaurants with outdoor seating most of them bougie. Check the website for all the events like fashion shows or kids activities. Drinks are around $8. Warning though parking is a challenge so be prepared to be patient and to walk a lot.

We went on a Saturday when the Hawks were playing and won and the nice rainy weather we had on and off. Yet people were still hangout out. I was told that this was a 3 days event. We were here because my brother lives off this street. There was a $5 donation at the entrance which was ok. They had two live band stages on both ends of the street. I wished one of them had different DJs playing instead. They had plenty of port a potties and some picnic tables for folks to sit down and eat. The food venues that were set up in the middle of the streets were ok. You can also eat in the actual restaurants off the street as well. I wish the restaurants themselves would have at least set up a section and sell their most popular dishes as appetizer size for us to purchase, like Taste of Chicago.. I have to say that they did keep the streets clean from garbage and flooding water when it rained. There was a pretty good crowd and a lot of them dog owners. The crowd itself was mostly folks around their 20's-30's and a few with their kids. This would be a great Fest to meet local people if you live around the area. Overall, it was a nice experience as this was our first time attending these types of Fest in Chicago.

The famous beer sheep made prices reasonable.

Somehow the math doesn't add up right. So you've got this street fest in a great neighborhood (well, there is some bar fail in the area, I admit) with good bands (especially big with the kids in said neighborhood), a friendly atmosphere (Marty Lennartz from WXRT just being another person in the crowd instead of on stage like usual) and potentially great food vendors (Mana Food Bar, anyone) and yet the whole thing adds up to an average experience. Yeah, maybe it doesn't make any sense because I forgot to "do division." There is some variable that I'm missing that the whole fest is divided by. I would have to say that the "x" for this festival stands for "x"ecution (this review is about math, not spelling, darn it). The problem with Do Division was that it was too compact. There were enough booths inside for four blocks all compressed into two. Sunday wasn't horrible for space, though still a bit messy, but I could only imagine how crowded it was on Saturday. The sound was also terrible at the main stage unless you were close. It wasn't hard to get close on Sunday (the only way to meet Marty Lennartz) but even about two storefronts away from the stage, we could hear nothing but bass. There definitely needed to be more variety as well. The vendors were sadly predictable. Is there really any need for two sunglass tents? There were some new faces (and the spray pancakes were incredible) but I feel like it's possible I'll be seeing those at every fest to follow. So with the exception of the vegetarian food choices and the beer sheep (some ingenious locals dropping beer from the sky out of their apartment in a sheep shaped bucket for cheaper than the $4 PBRs at the beer tent) there was sadly no x factor to multiply Do Division by to separate it from any other festival.

I thing that's really cool about my b-day weekend (other then the obvious) is that their are a butt load of fests. Out of all of them Do Division is making it's way to up to the top of my list. It certainly had the better bands this year out of all the festivals and those to come from what I see. Usually at these things I follow a check list 1. Get drink 2. Walk from end to end just to check out vendors (Hey Yelp booth!) 3. Pick food vendor, get food 4. Find nice spot to eat and listen to live music I know simple... yet smart!! This year was ok, crowd was getting a little crappy later in the evening (hipsters and trixies galore) but always fun to watch. I found really cool t-shirt vendors which I'll be scoping out later online. I'm happy with it. White Rabbits rule!!

For my 1st Chicago festival of the year, Do Division Street fest was a little underwhelming. It didn't disappoint as far as having something fun to do on a Saturday. But in comparison to other festivals I've been to in the past, there weren't a lot of food and drink options. The fest really only has 2 drink tents that features the same beers, cider and Sangria. You'd like to see more than 6 options. And it didn't help that both tents were on complete opposite sides of the festival. Food options were a little better. They had a huge food tent with wing buckets, cheese fries buckets, italian beef and a bunch of other things you would find in a sandwich shop. And they also had an orange chicken stand that was packed with people. The saving grace was the local establishments. So if you didn't want the food or drinks at the festival, almost every establishment was jam packed with people eating and sitting on their patios. We stopped at FAME and had a great time there with their $5 dollar burgers and pints special. For $5, its worth it if you are out with friends. Just wish there were more options food and drinkwise.

Bought an awesome $5 ring :)

I don't eat good tamales very often and it was very convenient to have one location with all of the local venders so that I could try multiple restaurants at once. -Narrowing down which restaurant was my favorite to avoid future disappointments. Hands down, Yvolina's was my favorite. The chicharron tamale with green mole sauce was still in my mind when I woke up this morning. But sadly, I had to eat a grapefruit instead. ::sad face:: They run about $10 each, but are very large. I did also enjoy Yvolina's Chicken Tinga tamale, but the chicharron is the one I'd go back for. Didn't love the churros from Xurro, but I'm a pastry chef and make churros quite often. Maybe I just prefer my own. I ordered the churro s'more and wouldn't order again. It was all way too dry. Not enough chocolate either. There were many kinds of venders. If tamales aren't your thing, you aren't out of luck. With tacos, tortas, burritos, quesadillas etc.. sold up and down the streets, there's something for everybody. My only regret was not ordering the street corn that everyone seemed to me walking around eating. As much of a pain it was to be raining, it was the perfect time to go. The crowds were very minimal. It was still a lively bunch though. Many people dancing in the streets as the music blasted in the air. I very much enjoyed my evening and will definitely return next year. Parking is a bit of a beast. Prepare to have to park a bit far and walk.

At $15 for two adult entrance tickets and free parking, it was pretty reasonable for festival pricing. As you do at a rib fest, we ordered a bunch of ribs from the following places: - Rasta Joe's: The best out of the bunch. The ribs were cooked perfectly and the sauce was great, with a hint of Caribbean flair. The portion size was also quite generous as we received 6(!) ribs for the 1:3 size that cost $10. This is what I expected a half slab to be. We were extremely happy with this! - Chicago BBQ: Decent. The ribs are quite fatty and fall or the bone. I would equate this to like Barnellis ribs. They're tender and BBQ-ey but nothing extraordinary. I would eat them again though. At $8 for 3 ribs, I'd go for Rasta's. - Texas Lightning: Ew. Ew. Ew. Complete regret for this one. So glad we got a sampler because I think I would have shed a tear if we bought a full slab. High expectations for the Texans but they failed to deliver. The ribs were extremely dry, flaky, and flavorless. It was like someone microwaved a slab of ribs and drizzled some sauce over it. The Jamaican Pork at Rasta's was pretty good too! Good spices. We would definitely give Rasta's an A++ for their ribs. The carnival itself looked fun but also very expensive. Overall, it was a decent event with live music and booze.

To be honest, I enjoy em, and this one, called Buffalo Grove Days, or what the cool kids call it -- "BG Days" is A-OK with me. I do like how this is well laid-out. There are shuttle buses to take/drop you to where you need to be. I didn't bother looking for parking and ended up parking at wherever the Buffalo Grove Days parking signs pointed to, which ended up being at the Buffalo Grove Metra station, which was free. I do have to say that the offering of carnival rides BG Days have, compared to the other copious amounts of suburban festivals, was less. It was actually hard to use up our 22-tickets (this year it was 22-tickets for $25) and I'm glad I didn't go with the unlimited rides for $25 each. The carnival games included pop-a-shot, lucky ducks, and other typical games. Food-wise, the food tent was actually pretty big. Lots to choose from, from pizza, to Mexican, to Dairy Queen. Food prices were A-OK and definitely not like the $40 for a piece of lettuce prices you'd find at the Taste of Chicago.
