No appointment? No problem -- early arrival is key!!! I agree, at times it can be a hassle, but I've gone both with an appointment and, like today, without one. Honestly, it's all about timing. I arrived at 6:15 AM and waited in the car line for the gate to open. Once it did, everyone rushed to park and get in the actual line. I was 7th in line. They only handle Real ID applicants from 7:00 to 7:40 AM. Promptly at 8 AM, I was inside. The front desk attendant was pleasant, and I got my number. I waited about 15 minutes for it to be called. The next attendant was also very helpful, and we were done! I still need to return to complete my paperwork, but I already set up an appointment for that. No one wants to wake up early, but if you don't have an appointment, it's BEST to arrive early so you don't end up waiting longer than necessary. read more

You know what! I was raised my whole life coming to this DMV and never had an issue. My parents recently went in trying to renew their ID and to their surprise, they had to do it online not in person. The audacity of the worker to tell them, " if you don't know what you're doing, what are you doing here". GTFO! Get better staff who can respect people! I'm a disabled veteran. I went in to get my DV plates and registration waiver or whatever it's called. I get to the gal to get my number. She's looking at my forms. She confirms with the other lady that the letter from the VA is accepted, it is. I get my number and sit down. Waiting almost an hour I finally get called to window 22. The lady there is just outright RUDE (Unfortunately I didn't get her name as I was too pissed off to ask for it or ask for a supervisor to explain further). She asked for the medical certification form from my doctor. I told her I had a letter from the VA that I was told was acceptable. On the REG256 form section 3, the instructions state the following: In order to qualify for exempt registration benefits for one vehicle and disabled veterans license plates, an eligible disabled veteran must submit the following to the DMV: 1. A copy of proof of true full name and DOB (used my DL, no issue there). 2. ONE of the following required documentation: a) The medical certification below (section 4) completed and signed by one of the medical professionals indicated. b) A certification completed and signed by a COUNTY VETERANS SERCVICE OFFICER THAT CERTIFIES THE APPLICATNT IS A DISABLED VETERAN AS DESCERIBED IN CA VEHICLE CODE 295.7 (Could be one option I say I chose) c) A certification completed and signed by an authorized representative of the Dept of VA (CalVet) that certifies the applicant is a disabled veteran as described.... OPTION I COULD SAY I CHOSE d) A certification completed and signed by an authorized representative of the US DVA that certifies..... This is the ACTUAL option I chose. The form says ONE of those options were required NOT option A AND another option. I qualify, the lady at the DMV was just being LAZY because it was the end of the day! Upon entering this DMV there is a "no appointment" line and an "appointment" line. The two ladies who were working today in that area are absolutely rude. My drivers license was stolen and I asked if it was possible to take a new photo along with renewing my drivers license. The first lady said I wouldn't be able to take a photo. I went back in my car and found out that indeed I was able to take a new photo. I went back inside and the second lady rudely rejected me as well. This all would have been a lot better if they were kind throughout the process but they were SO RUDE. ZERO customer service skills. I drove all the way to Glendale and waited two hours. PLEASE READ, it may help you out more than it did me! If you're looking to get anything done with your ID, including Real California ID, make sure you have a form of mail with your name and address and bring your birth certificate. If it says "ABSTRACT" on your certificate they will not accept it anymore and you'll have to get a new one. I had trouble removing JR as a suffix from a mistake I did years ago and it took them several mistakes before they finally figured it out. If you paid to have it fixed and it keeps coming back wrong make sure you have your receipt with you so they don't try and charge you again. If you can remember who you dealt with the previous times that will also help. My issue was I asked to have JR removed and I assumed the worker knew, but right before I took my picture I saw the receipt and they had still added JR going off the old ID. I went back that same moment and had her remove it, but whatever reason the system didn't read it and I kept getting JR on all my new ID's that came in the mail until they did everything from scratch again and had my picture taken again. read more

It's always worth making an appointment in advance if you have business at the DMV. I made my appointment two weeks prior and walked right in and was seen within 10 minutes. The line for non-appointments was at least 100 people deep. I felt so bad for them as it was raining outside, once I got in the building, they have their own fast track lane for appointments which is awesome and they called my number within 7 to 8 minutes.
