I am so glad that I bought a Groupon voucher to take this African dance. I went on a Friday at 7:30 and arrived a bit early to register & redeem the free class (as listed on the voucher). The voucher itself doesn't give that much detail about the teacher--it only states that they are experienced professionals--so I was a bit curious as to what the next hour and thirty minutes would entail. To say the experience was worth the discount is an understatement. I mean, seven live drummers?! They were all incredible and the rhythm was mind-blowing. Those guys were like the class's own personal band! The teacher started with a great 30-minute full-body warm up that got the blood pumping for sure. I was beat! Throughout the rest of class, the teacher taught us fun African dance steps that he broke down in such a way that even I was able to follow along, learn, and have fun, contrary to many other beginner dance classes that are either too slow, boring, or really not for beginners. I had such a blast that after my voucher expired, I continued taking classes and paid the regular $18. One of the best Groupon vouches I've ever invested in. My first pathetic experience in NYC. When I just moved in NYC, I was looking for belly Dance school for fun, keeping fit, sexy movement and making friends. My acquaintance recommended me the dance studio and take a try-out lesson if I would like it. As she said, I checked the schedule on the website while thinking which class I should take....etc..etc.... was so excited. Later, I got a free lesson pass via e-mail. HOWEVER, I realized that did not have any equipment to print it out, even roommates. Went to the Djoniba reception desk, explained to a male staff about my situation and what I am suppose to do for it. Even though I suggested what if I would bring the laptop and show the free pass, he insisted on PRINTED OUT pass.....and his attitude was totally cold.... Instead of getting angry, I felt so SAD. Because of not only for the rejection and his attitude, but also I felt myself pathetic: the Dance instructors might be great as far as I heard, but I missed it because of his attitude and No printer!! I should have gone to kinko's for it? (But I didn't know that at that time and he've never given such an idea. ) Now I got all-in-one printer. nobody's gonna refuse me! I recommend everyone! My dentist, coworkers, friends, not just because it is a great workout, but it is also challenging in that fun, I want to get better way and the class is set up so that you are able to master different dance elements. Even the warm up is well designed to get ready, and always basically the same so that you can see your progress. About a beginner African dance class: (1hr 30mins) Warm up (30 minutes) Dance instruction (50-55 minutes) Dance routine performance (5+ minutes) What makes the Djoniba's classes great: * He focuses on one particular type of dance for several weeks so that you grow familiar to the movement, but he changes things up to challenge you and keeps it fun. * Constant movement and dance. I've been to other classes where I swear the instructors talk all day or allow other students to talk all day and you learn less. Not here! You get every minute well used. * Professional instruction. He breaks down the dance steps and will correct you, no matter how large or small the class size. * Live drummers!! Can't forget the drummers, who are also talented and fun and encouraging. Everyone enjoys themselves and ups their game. Overall, this is my favorite dance class. And it helps that Djoniba is funny too. read more

It's dirty but the studio was big. I was in NYC for the weekend and since I teach a hip hop class at my gym - I thought - oh hell - let's take a class and learn some new moves. Ha - that was a fun thought! I must preface - I'm a 35 year old - somewhat chubby girl that teaches a hip hop class to other 30 year old women in Cincinnati, Ohio. Everybody in the class was under 23 and all were probably trying to be "dancers". That said - I held my own for a while! hahahaha I lasted about an hour - at that point - I just grabbed my bag and left - it was either that or cry! hahaha It wasn't that bad - I just couldn't keep up. I had "Hollywood" - whatever his damn name is Jose Ramos. His assistant did the warm up and she took her time and was encouraging. Jose came in and started the routine - he taught slower at first but then just started teaching a combination and showed you maybe twice and then you did it twice and onto the next. Nothing was that difficult but it was just a lot faster than I was used to (understandably). I didn't expect him to slow down for me - he had to teach to the class - but there were only 5 of us. He basically ignored the fact that I was even in the room - which I found rude. He also showed us the routine up to tempo and everyone applauded - um dude - he's not Shane Sparks. But hey - I'm from Cincinnati - what the hell do I know - maybe that's etiquette. If I'd had 3 hours rather than 1.5 - I probably could have gotten a lot more of the routine. In the end though - I did pick up some new moves that I think I can slow down and use. It was a good experience but not great. When I go back to NYC I might try and get a private lesson with a choreographer - it'll cost more than my measly $14 but I'll get more out of it and feel better after. The studio itself was fine - nice people - had water for sale for $1. You do have to buzz to the 7th floor to get in - fyi. read more

Wow just wrote an essay of a compliment to Djoniba Dance. If people don't read the whole thing: Wonderful live music, awesome instructor; strong workout; fun choreography; and high energy. I am a Contemporary/ Modern dancer, with eventual plans to teach and choreograph. I've had a specific critique of how Contemporary/ Modern can be taught at times----and it's such a common thing in dance classes. At a Djoniba Saturday class, I FINALLY saw a teacher not do this specific thing, that I feel slows down progress for dancers. Now, you could say, well we're talking about different genres of dance. There's that. But dancers like to study across various genres, and some things can be compared, as far as teaching styles. SO OFTEN in dance classes..........You're learning a combination that is challenging and fun, and medium fast. The instructor does slow down and break it into chunks at first. That's true. But next thing you know, your group of 4 is doing the combo at the fast speed, just once or twice, then move on. You watch other groups, still totally confused about what the choreography really is. Then it's your small group's turn to repeat. It's ok. Yes, memorization gets easier if you take class regularly. And yes, some instructors are better with going over the small chunks slowly. I can imagine lots of dancers arguing me on this point.....No worries. We all get our perceptions. But to me, instead of the last 30 minutes of class like: Group of 4, group of 4, fast, fast fast, then everyone's clapping and it's over. What about 20 extra minutes sloooow...... and maybe even repeating one small section of the choreography many more times than you would think, before moving on to the next. Last 10 minutes, sure, speed it up. The body has its own timing to remember movement. Dancers like to show off their fast memorization skills-----and maybe I'm a dancer with some of this ability too (I've been doing it a while). My point isn't really to never speed up, or to say this as a total beginner to dance. I just really and truly believe-----as someone who's danced a long time-----that some amount of the hours adding up in classrooms can get a little bit frittered away or almost wasted. You're a good dancer, but you're faking it through the moves, not getting full impact----simply from not memorizing fast enough. I'm kind of exaggerating the problem, but would be curious to hear from other dancers. ANYWAY! The Beginner level Djoniba class FINALLY did this thing I've been hoping to see. Or maybe I've seen, but not super often (and again I'm kindof exaggerating my critique, or generalizing it unfairly....but you get the idea). The Saturday Djoniba instructor had phenomenal pacing. Fast combinations were taught in perfectly timed repetitions of the small pieces. Then put back together at the right moment, and sped up. Don't be fooled when I say the teaching encouraged actual memorization of movement. I'm not saying the class itself was slow. I worked up a good sweat, and felt challenged. I believe that some of my favorite instructors-----while being NYC dance professionals and right on in many important ways----are missing the concept of pacing/timing. It's not about whether you do slow or fast, more how that progression happens with repetition. THANK YOU Djoniba! I will take class again, and tell friends to take this class too. read more

I'm a little conflicted. After reading the other reviews --all of which I agree with to varying degrees-- I still want to give Djoniba 5 stars. True: -It's not the cleanest, fanciest studio. -There is one working toilet. -People who work there, work there (sign you in and take your money, but same goes for DNA desk staff and everywhere else). -Teachers mostly dance, and keep dancing. There isn't too much time taken to explain each isolated step and nuance. Also true, though: -The studios are HUGE. -I have always been able to use the toilet when I needed it. -No bathroom is as clean as my house anyway. -These are some of the cheapest dance classes in the city (Trisha Brown and Movement Research are also great and similar price), most places are now $18+ for non-member prices. -Because teachers spend less time explaining each little step, you have much more dancing time in spite of the full classes. The nature of the music and dancing is one that you feel the music and pick up the rhythm. It's not meant for you to do it exactly like the teacher, but for you to make it your own. Nuance isn't taught, it's observed and assumed. With that said, at other studios even if teachers are helpful and corrective, they are still the knowing "expert" and you are still the student striving for a certain standard. There is a hierarchy. In these classes, the teachers are more like a guide (definitely they know their stuff, and who knows if there can be some ego and arrogance), teaching you choreography, but not holding you to one particular style. So, if you want to get lost in the drumming and dancing, if a little bit of sweat and grit doesn't bother you, if you are ok with letting go and not needing to know exact steps, then GO. read more

I really wanted to like this place. Really REALLY wanted to like it. I'd been looking for a place to try african dance, and it seemed like a promising studio. It took me a long time to finally try it out, and once I did...well, it was quite disappointing. The class was held in a crappy studio space, but it was temporary so I could overlook this if it were the only problem. My friends and I had coupons from the studio for a free introductory class for new members. However, once we arrived, we discovered that there was an additional $3 fee for live musicians. Ok, that's not unreasonable, but there was no info on the website to inform you of which classes did & didn't have that. So it felt really sneaky. The guy who took money at the door was borderline rude, too. On top of all this, the instructor was literally an hour late. After 15min or so, one of the girls in the class (who seemed to come there a lot) started leading a warm-up. But after awhile, she ran out of ideas, and then we sat around and our muscles got cold again. Now, he did run the class a bit longer to make up for his lateness, but I had to leave at the normal end-time, so it didn't really do me a damn bit of good. And he didn't even apologize for being late. I also wasn't particularly impressed by his teaching skills. He definitely paid attention to the students as we ran through the movements (and he has an impressive memory for names), but he wasn't great at breaking things down. Price: $17 Highlight: The live drumming I had a coupon for the free class for new students but forgot to print it and they don't allow you to show it from your phone. : ( I have loved dancing since I've breathed Earth's air. So I dragged my old bones down to Djoniba which is housed in a facility along with a couple other dance schools. I was in search of an experience similar to the modern/african dancing classes I attended in early high school. I absolutely loved the live drumming and I also loved that the class had people of different skills and ages - everyone was just there for the common love of dance and enjoying themselves in a good sized dance studio, one wall of which was all mirrors. In the middle of the class the instructor walked out. For a break? To answer a call? To see the Supermoon? Well, we'll never know. He reappeared with no explanation and soon after our vibe was broken yet again by someone who came in for a roll call for the entire 15 member class, except there were 16 people in the class. So then began a game of Clue to find who was the insurgent in our midst. Then we got back to dancing. It worked for a fix. Maybe I'll be back...Hmmm... read more

I have been going to Djoniba since April 2007, and I really love my class there. Because I go almost every week, the ten class card makes sense for me, even though it's really only a $10 discount from paying per class, because they charge you extra for using a credit card. First off, my teacher Azza is amazing. She is a great dancer and more importantly, a great teacher. She really tries to teach you until you get it right, rather than some of the other teachers who just kind of dance and expect you to follow along without really explaining themselves. Her wednesday classes are usually packed, so if you want more face time, you should go on Sunday. The facilities are so-so. The floors are pretty grimy, as is the ladies' bathroom. After class, be ready to fight a bunch of sweaty half naked girls for the one working toilet. Also, be prepared and bring flip flops if you're showering, and a hand towel. However, I know that this school is really awesome, and high energy fun. I watch the Samba and Tribal dances all the time, and everyone who does it raves about it. The people who work there are hit or miss - they are either really friendly, or absolutely useless. Either way, try and class (it's free for first timers, with coupon) and have a great time!! read more

I took a class here for fun with a friend. We had a free trial pass and paid the $3 for the drummers. The drummers did only play at the end, but throughout the class our instructor was teaching us different combinations of moves which we put together at the end when the drummers came. He was very fun and embraced us newcomers, and taught us how to dance to drums. The class was a GREAT workout for the 1.5 hours we were there. The first 30 minutes was a warmup, but not your normal warmup since there was a lot of moving around and ab-work involved. I was sore for at least 2 days after this. I am planning to go back once in a while since the class time didn't work out for me for a regualr basis. But when I am in a mood for a great workout, I am definitely going to come. Forget bootcamp, this place kicks your but and is fun! read more

Im surprised at the poor reviews posted on this site. Never the less, Id like to write an honest review for this center. I started coming in 2018, with instructor Joneeba for African Dance. He provides a beginners dance class, and makes it easy to learn via repetition, yet challenging enough to make you want to get it right. Its extremely fun, makes you forget your daily stress, and really good cardio workout! The classes here are a highlight of my week, I leave the center feeling great. I also love the live drumming. Its a great experience. Id highly recommend it! read more

Horrible experience! A huge sign in the street said "free trial class". Me and my friend went there, and in the reception we were told to pay 3$ each, which was acceptable. After 30 min of the class, Djoniba told us to go and talk to the receptionist, without any further explanation. She told us that we needed to pay 17$ to finish the class or otherwise leave. She was not able to refund our 3$ since Djoniba would not accept it. We got the impression that it was not the first (or last) time this happend and that Djoniba is only focusing on earning money and not at all creating a nice atmosphere and welcoming new people. We went back to the class to get our things - without any reaction from Djoniba. The african dance community is normally welcoming you with a big smile. This is definitely not the case here. read more

I love this place, truly I do. I've been coming to Djoniba's beginner African class for eight years now, and very steadily for the last two. I am not a natural dancer and one of the things I love best about his class is how accessible the moves are to everyone, from all walks of life. With four classes offered per week in his beginner class plus many more from his other teachers, I always have a few to go to on any given week. It's also the best workout I've found, and I also take bootcamp, so I have comparison! It never gets old, only better. read more

LOVEEEEEE this place. i bought a ten class card for $140, compared to 15$ per lesson. however, i suggest that you just pay per class, because the class card expires within 2 months. for an hour and a half with great teachers, you really get your money's worth. you can start class at any time, and take whatever classes you want.. which is great since my schedule won't let me commit to one specific time and date. it's not very pretty inside, but it focuses on what any great studio should: dance! many of the classes also feature live drummers. read more

This place has GREAT teachers, but the MANAGEMENT is horrible. The owner, Djoniba knows nothing about customer service and only cares about $$. He treats students and staff horribly. And the staff is pretty bad too (with the exception of one VERY nice man). They are rude and for the most part unprofessional. There are lots of other studios in the city. I recommend looking at Djoniba's schedule and googling the names of the teachers to find out where ELSE they teach. This is based on over a year of attending classes at this studio. read more

I am relatively new to Djoniba's dance classes and really enjoy them. I am not a dancer, but enjoyed dance class as a kid. This class is a great work out. I love the isolations and learning the steps. When he puts them all together at the end of the class, with the live drumming getting faster and faster, I can't keep up at all. But it is all great fun. The drumming is excellent and helps push you all the more. I highly recommend this class. read more

There was a week in Aug the air conditioner was broken (and I lost 4lb that week), but normally the studio is air conditioned. With 4-8 drummers playing live as that many people to share energy to dance, of course it's always HOT! I love it. I'm not a dancer and never really danced all my life, but Djoniba's class is easy to follow and after 5-6 classes I was able to actually 'dance'. People who are experienced dancers seems to enjoy his method, because there are elements he's including for all levels. This is only the cardio work out I can keep up, because it's so much fun. I've been going there about twice a week for 8 months and my body is visibly toned and lost 10 lb. To get the maximum work out you have to do the warm-up/conditioning seriously, ya I know it's really tough one. read more

I was invited by a friend to take a class on a Saturday afternoon and it was my first time dancing in about 2 years. Walked in to the room and immediately felt welcomed by the students as well as the instructor (West African dance class). Between the energy of the instructor, students, and drummers, I felt at home in the space and look forward to being back very soon. Phenomenal studio space and the classes are affordable. No air conditioning. Have you ever tried busting your ass with African dance with no air conditioning in 95 degree NY summer heat? Well, you can here. Oh my god I thought that I was going to die, And, I am in good shape and do this kind of dancing 3-4 times per week. Other than that, the teacher was lovely and very nice, the dance studio was loud, noisy, crowded, HOT and very dirty. The dressing room is super dirty with about an inch of water on the floor and just a curtain separating where you change from a hallway and studio full of people. I am still giving it three stars because the spirit and the people there are great, as well as the teaching... I think that you have to be more hard core than I am to go here. The drumming is fantastic. Something to note, they have a free first time class offer that you can get via email, what they don't tell you is that after you print out the coupon, it expires in a week. I printed it out and then took it down there and they wouldn't give me the free class even though I had a coupon and it was my first time, totally lame. Oh well. read more

I didn't even get a chance to GET into the dance centre -- the bad phone customer service was enough. I called to ask about redeeming a voucher I have for one free class -- the organization's website listed Djoniba as a participating studio and listed their info and link to their site. I went onto Djoniba's site, read their schedule, picked a couple classes, then called, as the voucher suggested, to pre-arrange admittance to the class. I got a guy on the phone who was not familiar with the organization. I tell him all that I did, and he asks me if the voucher says which specific class I could use it for. I said it does not, which is why I called, to see if it could be used for the few classes I was interested in, which I picked from their website. As usual, when you perplex someone whose "job" it is to "just answer the phones," they get defensive. He goes into "I'm just trying to help you," while re-asking me the same questions, and then, when I began to to give him my phone number, as he'd asked before launching into a soliloquy about what he would have to do to find out more info, he tells me "you cut me off when I was talking..." Seriously? I promptly hung up. Here's a suggestion for the owner: get someone who is truly interested in what happens AFTER they "just answer the phones;" the first impression I got from this business will assure that I will not attempt to patronize it NOR refer it. My "free" voucher is not even worth enduring bad customer service, or people who can't assist you beyond answering the phone. No one needs to be frustrated at all, but BEFORE I can even experience a class? And reading the other reviews, I'm probably better off...don't need crappy phone service and then arrive at a "dirty" studio. Wow...you may want to work on some things... read more

I took my first class here this past Saturday, 6/18/11, using the (ahem) "free pass" for the Beginner African Dance session taught my Djoniba Mouflet himself. FYI, there is an additional $3 charge at the door for live drumming, which by the way isn't truly "live" until 15-20 minutes before class is over. I went here strictly for the purpose of a cardio workout...I'm not trying to be a real dancer someday! Nonetheless, a workout was what I got. The warm-up was honestly the hardest part of the class. It's a combination of stretching and ab exercises that were really REALLY challenging and non-stop. After the warm-up he began breaking down movements and parts of the routine that we would put together later on. He's a really fun and energetic teacher who you can tell loves what he's doing. He goes over the movements more than enough times for everyone to catch on...but beware, he'll tease u if u get too awkward looking..don't take offense to this. Anyhow, the class went well, the only issue I had was that the class didnt have a consistent "flow". There were several mini-breaks in between that really broke the rhythm of the class. I dont know about others, but once I'm in the midst of a cardio workout I dont want to keep taking breaks...it defeats the purpose of the heart work. Then the fact that the actual drummers didn't come in until the latter part of the class was a bit "off" for me as well. I figured once the routine in full was taught, we would go non-stop as the drummers played. But it seemed moreso that at one point we were just standing around watching the drummers. Also, maybe it was just me, but once we started putting the routine together, I couldn't understand how many times he wanted us to repeat each movement. It seemed the people up front already had an understanding but I believe Djoniba shouldve been clearer about it. For example the routine may have 5 movements, he should say how many x's we should repeat each one before moving to the next. But oh well. I caught on to the movements but again, I just wish there was a better flow. I didnt have some of the issues other reviewers did: i.e., the dirty & crowded bathroom/shower, the dirty/small studio floor. In fact, the place looked great and I believe it's newly renovated. Idk if people truly understand what it costs for dance classes/lessons these days. This place is really inexpensive and I think you get more than your money's worth. Bottom line, if you want Alvin Ailey, go to Alvin Ailey and be prepared to pay A.A. money! As for me, I'll revisit this place again, and see if maybe I can pick up the flow of the routine a little better! Overall I wanted to give this place 3.5 but when forced, I definitely choose to grade up (4) not down (3). It's one of those places where you just won't know unless you try it!! read more

I was surfing online to finally satisfy my dance craving to try African dance (yes I said "dance craving"! Don't you ever get the urge to get up and try something new?!) and I found Djoniba's website. Okay, so it 's not exactly new to me since I spent about 2 years as a kid in an African dance troupe (but believe me, I was never the prima donna! I had to fight just not to be a bad/mediocre dancer). I had wanted to test out my muscle memory and see just how well I could pick up the steps again and actually re-live/rewrite my past ('cause I actually hated being in that troupe!). Anyway, the classes looked interesting, convenient, and affordable (at $17ea.) so I was definitely intrigued. Idk why (maybe I remembered my old instructor and got shivers), but I didn't sign up right away and lucky I didn't. A few weeks passed and I happened to stumble upon Djoniba's 3 for 1 deal on Bloomspot. So I got 3 classes for the price of one to a place that I had wanted to try out anyway! Ha Ha! Well, I used my voucher and am so glad I did! The first class was pretty awful. I had forgotten much and my ego was pretty bruised, but by the second class I had let go of my previous disappointment and found that I was better able to pick up the steps and let loose! To speak on the class itself, it was big, but not as densely packed as some pics/vids suggest - there was plenty room to move. The choreography was a challenge for me as I've never been inclined to follow such stuff, but the more you relax, the easier it comes. The instructor was nice and humorous (though he may call you out on messing up the moves. He does tell you what you're doing wrong/what the right moves are, so I think it is well-intended and meant to get you on the same page as the rest of the class - just fyi, for the more sensitive types). One thing I must mention is that is a REAL workout. You will sweat. Profusely! It's fantastic if you want to loose weight, just 2-3 classes a week and you'll be swimming in your clothes after a few short weeks. I think this is probably true of African dance in general, but it's all in good fun! I had such a blast every time I went. Hearing/feeling the sound of the drums, jumping around all the time, and being encouraged to loosen up your body and give in to the beat is so energizing! I think I've got to go back and try their Haitian dance class, which went on before the African dance. I don't know how to describe it. It just looked stunning and as a halfie (I'm1/2 Haitian, 1/4 Guyanese, and 1/4 Surinamese), I think I have a duty to give my nation's dance legacy a try :) read more

I am 34 year old woman who started taking the beginner African dance classes with Djoniba two weeks ago and I am hooked! The classes are offered at the Peridance Dance Center on East 13th Street. The classes are challenging. The first half hour is full of things like push-ups, leg-lifts, and crunches. Your abs will never be the same! After my first class, I was so sore that I could barely stand up straight for a full two days (not kidding). If you wanted, you could view the class simply as a workout. This aspect alone makes it worth the price. At that first class, Djoniba asked me for my name and he hasn't forgot it since. He never lets anyone feel left out. As someone who is not a dancer, this is very important to me. I have been to plenty of "beginner" classes in other studios where I have felt unable to keep up -which ended up being a waste of my time and money because I felt embarassed and didn't learn anything. This is not the case with Djoniba! Although there are many students in the beginner class that are clearly at a higher level, Djoniba gives his attention to all his students. He breaks down steps for the new people like me, and challenges the advanced students to perfect their form. Some of the students have told me they have taken the beginner class for over two years! I know everyone mentions the live drums -but truly, the drums make the experience awesome! My favorite part of the class is when we dance together at the end. Not only do you put together what you've learned, you also really feel the spirit of Djoniba, the drummers, and your fellow dancers. It is so fun! If time allows before the next class, you get to participate in a little "jam session". He doesn't force them, but If they are willing, Djoniba will pull out individial members of the class, and they get to shake their thang solo! Love it!! read more

after coming here for over 5 years....I think that Djoniba who runs the place is incredibily rude and that description of his business manners does not do juctice to say the least. The people who work at the desk are not always the most helpful and friendly either. I do believe there are some good instructors there (though the excellent teachers have left over the years...from what I hear, the same reason I am at my last string with this place...Djoniba's attitude and conduct). Without going into great detail, I will tell you that after 5 years of coming to this studio, I am officially done with them. Such an energetic and inspirational class. Definitely a lot harder than it looks but a fun class all the way through. Would recommend to anyone and everyone interested in doing a fun, dance class and meeting great people! read more
