We we're married April 15th and part of the initial planning of course was "what are we going to do musically"?? I'm Latin and my husband plays heavy metal, but he mostly listens to 70's Soul, Classic Rock, Country and Early Heavy Metal. I love all kinds of music but currently; I'm all about 70s Latin, Jazz, Experimental and local bands. After much thought and discussion, we decided there wasn't a live band on the planet diverse enough to play the soundtrack defining our lives. Enter DJ Vinnie!!! Finding a good wedding DJ can be a bit tricky, since they're one of the few vendors that you can't really see or experience their work beforehand. Luckily we found DJ Vinnie as a recommended vendor through our photographers, Helena and Laurent. After reading positive Yelp reviews, we reached out and got to know Vinnie over the phone. He was friendly, easygoing, professional, and just fun to talk to. We liked that he's knowledgeable about all kinds of music, has a lot of DJ experience, and still spins vinyl records. (He's old school in the best possible way.) And he's definitely not a cheesy DJ, which we didn't want. Out of the other DJs we chatted with, Vinnie just had a better vibe (and a better quote) so we hired him right away. About a month before the wedding, we met in person to discuss song choices and logistics. Since he has a lot of experience with weddings, Vinnie walked us through all the necessary details and equipment, from his setup at our venue to exactly what he should say for announcements. We also appreciated that he's always prepared in case things go wrong. For example, we wanted a lapel mic for our officiant, but he also suggested having a backup mic plugged in nearby. And he assured us that he'd have hard copies of all our music at the wedding instead of just relying on wifi. He even helped us with our timeline, such as figuring out when to do speeches and our first dance. After our meeting, I put together a few Spotify playlists for him: for the ceremony, cocktail hour/dinner, dancing, and a do-not-play list. After reviewing the playlists, he gave us some helpful feedback and suggestions. Everything went great on our wedding day. Vinnie was a wonderful DJ and MC and even helped us stay on schedule when our day of coordinator had to run a quick errand during our reception. All the music, vows, and speeches throughout the night sounded clear and were on cue. Since my husband and I aren't great dancers (and I've found most people aren't interested in watching an entire 4-minute-long dance), we wanted everyone to join us when the tempo picked up halfway through our first dance. We let a few friends know beforehand and would motion to people to join us, but we also asked Vinnie to make an announcement during the song. It worked perfectly, and it was a fun and effective way to transition from our first dance and also get people on the dance floor. Vinnie did a great job keeping people dancing all night. I even saw my elderly Asian relatives dance for the first time! And unbeknownst to me, my husband had requested that Vinnie dedicate a specific song to me, which was a wonderful surprise. I went into Groove Merchants (an outstanding record store in San Francisco) a few months ago looking for recommendations on a good wedding DJ. The owner gave me Vinnie's name, saying "Vinnie's about the best you'll find." He wasn't wrong. Vinnie is consultative -- he spoke with us several times on the phone, and helped us think through so many different elements of the night. These conversations went way beyond music. He really wound up being one of the most valuable behind-the-scenes contributors to our wedding. And then of course there's the music. Vinnie spins vinyl and has a terrific ear. We really appreciated the way he mixed in the deep cuts we wanted with things that would keep everyone dancing. Our dance floor was full the whole night. Last, it should be said that Vinnie's just a really nice, easygoing dude. He's easy to work with, yet totally buttoned-up. We got married in June and starting from our early conversations we knew that Vinnie was going to be the perfect DJ. We heard the sample mix on his website and it was a perfect combination of international groove, old school soul and contemporary. Vinnie was an absolute professional really taking the time over multiple phone conversations to get to know us and guide us through all the aspects where he would be involved throughout the wedding. We chose Vinnie to DJ our wedding in April based on a few factors: he came recommended by our venue and plenty of other couples here on Yelp, his prices are reasonable, and he took a thoughtful approach to music that aligned with the experience we hoped to create. I appreciated that in our intro call, Vinnie took time to describe his process end-to-end so that we understood how equipment set up, transitions, playlists, requests and announcements would work. We knew that we wanted lots of funk, soul and Motown overall and we provided a few song choices for each phase of the evening that Vinnie turned into fully fledged playlists to suit the mood of the moment (upbeat/sexy cocktail hour, warm/mellow dinner). Day-of, he arrived early to set up his gear and do a mic check with our officiant. Throughout the day, he seamlessly shifted equipment so that music followed the crowd as we moved from ceremony to reception, keeping noise levels just right. This meant that music was simply the backdrop and we were never conscious of all the technical aspects he was managing. He worked closely with our day-of coordinator for announcements during dinner speeches and his background in radio made him a natural, un-cheesy MC. Dancing after dinner was a memorable highlight. After our first dance, rather than throwing out a club banger to sort of awkwardly force a dance party, he played classics that got older relatives out on the floor for a while. My husband and I were searching for a wedding DJ when we heard about Vinnie from a couple we met at a party. WHHHHHAAAAAT?!? This guy is amazing. Hands. Down. Freakin. Amazing. We were incredibly frightened at the prospect of picking a DJ for our wedding. Our friend who used to work for Bill Graham Presents, the Fillmore and Yoshi's recommended him. If that wasn't endorsement enough, he sent us links to samples of his music, met with us to have beers and talk over the event and our expectations and was incredibly professional to work with. On the day of the wedding he took the pulse of the crowd and kept every single person dancing to amazing music with great beats. He never interrupted to say cheesy wedding cliche's, never played some horrible top 40 song, never got in the way of the fun. I have had about 10 people since the wedding ask me if they could get a mix of the evenings music just so they could relive the party. Let me first start off with describing Vinnie as a person then I'll get to the music. Vinnie was so accommodating. He met me to discuss details in the town that I live in, which was an hour away from him. I liked him off the jump. I gave him my deposit. Since the wedding was Months away, he would check in on me to make sure if I had any additional requests, questions or concerns. Then my wedding was postponed for another year. Vinnie was cool about it. When we finally committed to a new date, I reached out to Vinnie and he was available. He even let me use the deposit that I gave him for the original date. I most certainly figured he deposit was gone since I canceled. He met me again but this time I lived 1.5 hours away. Vinnie didn't even bat an eye. Now to the music! Vinnie has a lot of vinyl but his collection is not limited to only vinyl. My musical taste is eccentric to say the least. Vinnie was ok with all of my requests. I was even asking him to put music on the list the night prior to our wedding. He was cool with. Vinnie is not your typical corny wedding DJ. He was so helpful. This review comes three months late, but that has nothing to do with any sort of lack of enthusiasm, but rather my own chronic procrastination. My then fiancee/now wife and I were considering doing a DJ-less, iPod mishmash for our October wedding. Over the summer, as we were planning our wedding, we attended a dear friend's wedding in St Helena and DJ Vinnie was spinning for an outdoor crowd. We noticed a few things: -he wasn't corny...in fact, he's as cool as a cucumber -we weren't surprised that he spins at hip, local bars...he had a serenity to his craft -his tastes were great: we loved his cocktail hour and dinner music...when he did take the mic, he was clear and to the point -we loved his dance mix OK, so long story short, we contacted him and we went over details twice at a local bar. Clearly, we made the right choice. Dude is professional, no nonsense, kind and thoroughly knowledgeable of music. His thing is vinyl (he'll work with mp3s, CD's and the like as well....but we loved the fact that he actually spins) which was great because we had a lot of great records that hadn't seen the day since our turntable broke. He broke everything down for us, and really sectioned off what he could provide and what music choices we had to convey to him (for cocktail hour, dinner, grand introduction, slow dances, dance). He was very engaged. When we told him we wanted 50's lounge/exotica for cocktail hour, he was totally in and had stuff. We wanted early country and old Mexican ranchera/bolero music for dinner and he nailed it (even went so far as to bring a ton of Pedro Infante!). Didn't blink twice when we told him we wanted Black Sabbath for our grand introduction. Dude said he'd be on time, and boy was he. I showed up early to my wedding and he was already set up. Here's the kicker, and the moment I knew this guy was legit beyond: we told him months before that we didn't want ANY current Top 40 played. At some point near the end of the night, a bunch of the kids in their early-20's requested some corny-ass bullshit. DJ Vinnie actually came up to me and told me, "You said no Top 40, and I will totally respect that. But just to let you know, some of the kids requested (insert crappy artist) and I just wanted you to be aware and wanted to know if that'd be ok." That blew me away...I had had such a great time at my wedding and had really ceased caring and forgotten about my earlier Top 40 comments. But the fact is: HE remembered, and came up to me personally and asked my opinion. I respect that. He is a man of his word (for those of you wondering, I of course let those young'uns have that song!) Great job. All around. Couldn't recommend him more. read more

Vinnie is a consummate professional who helped make our wedding a success. He was initially recommended by my daughter (a non-wedding DJ) as one of the best wedding DJs and her recommendation was spot-on. Prior to the actual event he spend a good hour going over every single detail with us, covering items that we hadn't even considered. Our wedding was a small affair and he was able to keep a mixed age group up and dancing for most of the night. During non-dance times he played just the right music to accompany these quieter times. The entire event was supposed to be held outside, however due to the heat in the Blackhawk area, we had the ceremony outside and moved the dinner inside. Vinnie is an awesome DJ. He's professional, is incredibly knowledgeable about music, spins with vinyl (and has an insane collection), and is super easy and fun to work with. I hired Vinnie for a non-traditional wedding party in which the only request was to keep everyone dancing, and that he did. We met a few times and exchanged phone calls and emails leading up to the date - he was very thorough in terms of asking what we wanted, how we envisioned the night going, etc. We gave him a short list of the type of music we liked to dance to and from there he spun up an amazing array of songs that ranged from jazz to Brazilian to Motown to indie rock to old school hip-hop. I went through a couple DJs and had the worst experiences just finding one. Some were flaky and couldn't get mixes to me and some were just down right rude. I'm glad that I did have those experiences because in the end I found Vinnie and it made me appreciate him that much more. I wanted to find a DJ that could still spin vinyl, take some of the music that we wanted played, and add his own spin to it. Vinnie did all that ,all the while mixing in soul, latin, and some reggae. If you have songs outside of that genre that you want played, he's happy to mix it in knowing that sometime you need to make your guests happy. Vinnie is truly a professional and cares as much about your event as you do. He would take the time to call me to confirm how things should be set up and was very prompt in his responses. He's so friendly and down to earth... I didn't consider our meetings business meetings but more like getting coffee with a friend. I turned to Yelp to find a DJ for our wedding and I stumbled across Vinnie. These reviews are not wrong- 5 stars, excellent DJ. Vinnie is very professional, but not stuffy. He took the time to come to our house and talk about music that we like, schedules, etc. He is very good at returning emails promptly. He knows a lot about weddings, so he makes you feel very comfortable that he knows what he is doing. I didn't have too many ideas about how to run things and just left the show to Vinnie. However, he did a great job of incorporating the handful of songs that I specifically requested. And he literally had every single guest on the dance floor. I am still hearing from people, young and old, about how great the music was. And on top of all that, he's a very nice person. We had the pleasure of having Vinnie Esparza DJ our wedding. Months before our actual wedding, Vinnie got us thinking about many elements of our wedding to make sure that the music and any announcing that we would need would run smoothly. We met two different times in person and had several different phone conversations. In a sense, Vinnie was like a music and sound consultant as well as our DJ. Our wedding was in two locations: Our ceremony was in San Francisco and the reception was in San Rafael. Vinnie was able to run the music and set up in both locations, something we knew would be a challenge because of the time and distance between the two venues. He talked with us ahead of time about what type of music we wanted to have played and had us give him a CD of songs to be played for the ceremony and for our first dance, etc. at the reception. The rest of the music was on vinyl. That's right. Actual records. This was something important to us, as fans of soul, r&b, indie rock, hip hop and other genres of music. Vinnie wanted to make sure that he knew exactly what we wanted him to announce and how to pronounce the names of the wedding party. Being bilingual, Vinnie was sensitive to accurate pronunciation and in announcing in Spanish when necessary. He had top quality equipment, including a wireless microphone that allowed people to make toasts and speeches from different locations in the room. The actual music Vinnie played was a wonderful mixture of what we had asked for and selections that he knew would work at the appropriate times, whether it was tasteful dinner music, Jewish or Mexican folk music or funk and soul dance songs. As with any wedding, some things happen that are unplanned. Vinnie was very flexible when any changes had to be made and had great communication with us throughout the evening to help make sure things were going the way we wanted. We had a horrible experience with the DJ at our wedding 6 years ago and was reluctant about trying again, but felt confident in hiring Vinnie for my husband's birthday party last night because of all these wonderful reviews on Yelp. He accommodated our every request -- even when we decided to throw in a Lip Sync-off which made him get scrappy pulling Beyoncé and Bonnie Tyler from an iPhone. Vinnie DJ'd our wedding this past weekend and everyone had a really great time. We had a 70 person wedding and I'd say 63 people were dancing. He's in general a very nice and genuine person and we only met with him once before at the location, then traded a few emails, then were ready to go. He is extremely professional. We sent over a song list (we wanted 80s and 90s fun ones to sing to since we were having a small crowd and everyone was friends) and he played many of them while incorporating requests from the crowd and other fun ones. I had a bridezilla moment when I boo'd him for playing Brass Monkey (which some wedding guest probably requested) and he totally took it in stride (Sorry Vinnie!) and changed the song and kept going. He also stayed for an extra hour because people didn't get on the dance floor until an hour before it was supposed to shut down. He was totally flexible and just kept playing.
