New Location For "Crystal Basin Cellars!"…read more SITREP First off (to be absolutely clear), this is a FIRST REVIEW for Crystal Basin Cellars' New Location in Placerville, CA. Their old location in Camino, CA has shut down, but it would appear that all of our old Yelp-reviews have been *forwarded* to this Yelp business-site, making this merely a review-update, instead of an original review which it should be. Anywho..... THE SETUP Now located in Placerville, CA - a mere eight (8) miles from its old location in Camino - but now much closer to the business center of the thriving metropolis of Placerville - Crystal Basin Cellars has amped up their profile and marketing efforts to grow their business. Having been a fan of Crystal Basin Cellars for the better part of a decade now, I've thoroughly enjoyed taking my treks up here to The Apple Hill region of the foothills to take in the bounty of Crytal Basin that it wonderfully shares through it's vineyards, barrel rooms and wine bars. RELATED ENDEAVOR In addition to the winery itself, it should be pointed out that Crystal Basin Cellars has a "Crystal Basin Station" - it's stand-alone Wine Bar - located in the Historic Folsom Street district. MY WINE PICKUPS Owner Mike Owens signed me up to his White Wine Redneck Club last time I was up visiting him and the Crystal gang at their old Camino facility: I get three (3) wine pickups a year with 3 different varieties of white wine (my choice) for only about $60 each pickup (3 bottles, not bad!), all excellent wines. The last few times, it was far easier to get my pickup from their Folsom location when I was doing other stuff in Old Historic Folsom. However, this time, I wanted to visit this NEW location. It was a lot of fun to get the tour of the new winery facility with KZ, try some new wines (such as Renegade White), and do my Tri-Annual Wine Pick-up! EXTRA EXTRA! And I can't miss mentioning the awesome new line of mustards, olive oils, balsamic vinegars, spices, pretzels and other yummies you will find filling up the shelves. SO GOOD. And the wine during your tasting will wash down the yummies (and cool off your tongue during the tasting). THE LOWDOWN Make sure to check out this new Placerville location! My favorite was the margarita so yummy with a drizzle of pesto to make the flavors pop. The wine bottles were all decorated artistically of Davell's family. Her son painted the labels. The owner Davell was very friendly and informative of the different wines she offered. They also have a very cute friendly dog, welcoming all the guests. Relaxing day or night. We get to our table, explain the Groupon to the server in which she declined the Groupon. We asked for a little more time to decide what we would order instead, server NEVER comes back. Takes us 20 mins to flag down another server who also never comes back after our wine is dropped off. Once our original server comes back around about an hour later after our glasses are empty, she is stumbling on her words (clearly has been drinking) and makes an offer for the Groupon that didn't even make sense lol. I want soooo bad to be able to go back again but damn I'm disappointed. As a server myself this is unacceptable. Even for our anniversary we weren't expecting anything special just honest and attentive service. The experience left such a bad taste in our mouth. She mentioned being short staffed but the vibe at a winery to begin with is slow paced and never an excuse to just outright avoid your tables entirely. When we made the reservation for the Pinot Niors we thought we had made the reservation for Myka, since we did it from the Myka website. Upon arrival there was some confusion about our reservation. But our party of 6 finally was seated, a bit far from the tasting room and actually closer to the sister one. Either way the setting was lovely. Our next dilemma was the Pinot Nior flights were not served the day we were there, Friday. No where in our search of the website did any of us catch that. So we ordered other tasting flights from that day's menu. Service for seemed slow or off. We were seated to far from the staff or maybe they serve the members first. Finally the wine maker did stop by the table to introduce himself. It was a short conversation. The overall experience and the tasting left me feeling eh. I made no puchases to take home. The outside seating were picnic tables under beautiful trees providing enough shade and coolness to be comfortable for the experience. At one point, I was in awe of two hawks flying over that were making noise adding even more beauty to the experience. My partner and I opted to taste through their whole flight as they had 4 different flight options and all of them sounded so lovely. Our host brought out the flights in three and are poured in advance versus pouring each individual one which gives a great opportunity to pace yourself through each tasting and discuss as needed with anyone else that is tasting with you. We were lucky enough to meet the co-owner and winemaker, Paul, who was super sweet and engaging. I got to ask a few questions related to harvest and he was happy to talk about it and also share some history with their previous beautiful dogs that were part of their family before their passing. We LOVED their Grenache and Cab Sauv and took home three bottles of these. We look forward to coming back and tasting their delicious wine again and enjoying the great hospitality and experience!

We ordered at the bar inside and then the wines were brought out to us on the patio. It took longer than expected to get our flights, and then we were a bit disappointed that the sommelier didn't spend much time telling us about the wines. She brought them out and told us what each wine on the flight was, then left and we never saw her again. We've had several amazing tasting experiences in wine country where the sommelier tells you many more details about the wines including where on the property the grapes are grown, how it is made, and what different notes we will taste in each wine. It was a pretty basic explanation and we didn't feel that it was very personable despite it being a slow weekday. We ordered two tastings but all the wines were brought out in small carafes, we couldn't tell if each one held enough wine for one of us or both of our tastings combined. This wasn't ever explained either, so we assumed it was for both of us to share. We had the turkey and brie sandwich which was absolutely decadent and delicious. It was accompanied by an outstanding mac and couscous salad and spectacular house made pickles. We also had a (SLBC) draft beer off the solid beverage menu. Couldn't resist grabbing a peanut butter blondie for dessert later.
