The Long Version: This Filipino restaurant opened up July 28, 2024 where LeeGa used to be. I dropped by for some takeout lunch. Their combo is a great value. For $10.99 you get noodles or rice with 2 main dishes. It's cafeteria style, so they have what's available in trays and you just tell them which items you want. The drawback is you are limited to the selection they have that day. Also, none of the items are labelled so if you don't know what it is, you have to ask. The day I went, (a Sunday) their selections were fried shrimp in shell with corn on the cob, squid, fried chicken wings, a beef with peppers dish in an oily broth, a pork belly dish and a vegetable dish. The noodle dish was Pancit Canton. I went with the noodles, chicken wings and the beef. I asked for no broth with the beef because I didn't want all the oiliness getting into the wings and noodles, so the lady actually put it in a separate container, which I thought was nice. She still gave me lots of the oily broth though, lol. The beef was full of fat and swimming in oil. I wasn't a fan, but at least it had actual lean pieces of meat in it, in addition to all the fat. I just had to do a lot of work cutting off all the fat, lol. The meat was tender and flavourful. The fried chicken wings were great though. Very flavourful and not any greasier than chicken wings at other places. I got 4 pieces, 2 drumlettes and 2 flats. The pancit Canton was good. It had vegetable in it like snow peas, carrots, cabbage and bell peppers. It also had pieces of pork belly in it, but the pieces were really fatty, so I didn't eat them. I got a huge portion of noodles! In terms of value for money, this place is awesome. Easily 2 meals can be had from the combo. The actual food, particularly the beef and pork belly in the noodles, was too oily/fatty/greasy for me. I realize this might be the style for this type of cuisine, but it wasn't to my liking. The flavours were good though. For me personally, since I like lean meats and food that's on the drier side, I would rate 3 stars, but I get that the dishes were likely by nature more fatty and honestly, if they had other selections like BBQ chicken, I would have gotten that instead. So I'm giving 4 stars because I think for what it is, it was good and I have a soft spot for independently owned local businesses. Service was neutral but efficient. There's seating to eat in. The Long Version: This is the second location of the Khao restaurant line. The first is on Murray St in the Byward Market. This one is on Richmond Rd in Westboro and focuses more on Thai street food and decor is brighter and more colourful and playful than the more traditional original location. My friend and I had dinner here and overall we had a great time. We had a lot of catching up to do and staff were patient that we took our time to order. We split the chicken satay appetizer ($12). I got the beef Pad Khi Mao ($20) and my friend got the Mackerel with Chu Chee Curry ($25) and a bowl of brown rice ($5). Then we split the Thai Milk Tea Creme Brulee ($7). The chicken satay was delicious. The meat was lean chicken breast that was nicely seasoned. The meat was tender and moist. There were 4 skewers per order. It came with a slice of toasted white bread cut into quarters as well as a peanut dipping sauce, a watery chili dipping sauce and some slices of raw cucumber. My Pad Khi Mao came with a generous serving of tender beef slices, al dente broccoli, bell peppers, onions, mushrooms and basil. I got spice level 3 of 5 and it was mild-medium to me, so it was perfect. The flavour was phenomenal, but the dish was way too oily for me. I would have enjoyed this dish more if they toned down the oil. My friend's dish came with 3 whole fish, with the heads and tails (!) She enjoyed it but asked for the mildest level of spice and she still found it too spicy. So I feel that your mileage may vary when it comes to spice level here, lol. The Thai Milk Tea Creme Brulee was very rich and decadent and had a potent Thai Milk Tea flavour. I only had a spoonful and my friend had a few spoonfuls and took the rest home. It was good but too decadent after an entire meal, especially after my oily noodle dish. Service was great. Servers were attentive and friendly. Although my dish arrived quite a bit before my friend's dish so it was a bit cold by the time we both dug in. Water bottles were replaced when empty. I also liked that they gladly split items on the bill. The decor is colourful and fun. There's both indoor seating and outdoor patio seating. Example, lemongrass fried chicken wings and fried garlic is a knockout appetizer. The mango salad with anchovies is excellent too. The main such as panang chicken curry and beef pad Kra pow are very good. The drink menu is good too. Service was attentive although they were very busy. The air was a bit greasy when they stir fried certain dishes - it smelled like oil and red chilis. Nice but a bit uncomfortable at times. I hope they can sort that out. Definitely added to my list of fave Asian restaurants!

The Long Version: State and Main is a Canadian chain restaurant that started out in Calgary, AB. I feel it's similar to Moxies. Most items are not made from scratch and the menu while it has creative elements is never all that adventurous. It's a great restaurant for a mixed group. Those meat and potatoes types will find something inoffensive to them, and those with a more adventurous palate won't be too bored. I'm a bit critical of chain restaurants in general because I prefer small independently owned mom and pop shops where everything is made from scratch, and usually with love and passion. My preference is no secret to anyone who knows me. However, I feel that State and Main is one of the better chains. I went to State and Main with 2 of my friends for a late lunch that coincided with their Happy Hour. Their Happy Hour is 2-5pm and 9pm to close, 7 days a week. Their Happy Hour is not that much of a deal though as you only save $1.50-$3 off the regular menu prices, depending on the item. It's not like those half-price Happy Hours. I started with a State Soda (HH $6, regularly $8). I enjoyed it because it wasn't too sweet. It was vodka, club soda and a tiny bit of their signature "slush." I was going to get their soup dumplings, but cannot have sesame seeds and was advised that the packaging on the dumplings said "contains sesame" so I opted to get the Baja Brussels Sprouts instead. I asked for them to go light on the sauce, as I don't like my food too saucy and our lovely server, Dakota, suggested that I get the sauce on the side. Which was a fantastic idea! I also got a side portion of their mixed greens salad with the dressing on the side ($5.50). The Brussels sprouts were very good. They were crispy on the outside and had powdered Parmesan cheese sprinkled on them. There was also bacon and roasted red peppers pieces in the dish. The lime and cilantro sauce that came on the side was almost not really needed because the Brussels sprouts tasted good as is. I did try a bit of the sauce and it was pleasant. I would get the Brussels sprouts again. The mixed greens salad was better than I expected. It was a true mixed greens salad and not just romaine lettuce or the dreaded (well, I dread it because it's cheapie filler IMO) iceberg lettuce (it actually had no iceberg lettuce, yahoo!). It also had beets, goat cheese, pumpkin seeds and roasted chickpeas. Nothing too wild, but a bit more oomph than your run-of-the-mill garden salad. A few of the romaine spines were browning, but otherwise the other ingredients were fresh. I enjoyed the dijon vinaigrette and am happy I got it on the side because I used less than half of it. One friend got the State Smash cocktail ($10 HH menu, regularly $12) and she enjoyed the raspberry flavour. She also got the Chili Coconut Calamari ($16 HH menu, regularly $18.50). She wasn't as happy with her meal as found it a bit too spicy and found the calamari not large or plump enough. Visually the calamari did look rather small and not meaty. My other friend got the Baja Tacos with fries from their regular menu ($19). She really enjoyed her meal and the tacos looked great. The fish was battered and deep-fried. The fries were thicker cut but looked to be slightly battered or at least seasoned, and very crispy. We had a lovely time and our server, Dakota, was friendly and helpful. There was a slight error in our bills as the Happy Hour foods were charged at regular prices, but when I pointed this out, it was quickly fixed. The decor I would describe as "casual plus."
