I was so stoked when I saw that a new Filipino grocery store opened up near me. We had Il Baguio a while ago, but it wasn't that good and it closed down a few years ago anyway.
When I first walked in I was so happy to see that it was clean and neat. Most Filipino grocery stores that I have been to (admittedly only in the GTA and mostly along Eglinton at Bathurst or along St
Clair at Bathurst in Toronto in the 90s) have been rather dirty and messy. The items here were not dusty and they didn't look like they were sitting there for ages.
Now I was really disappointed that even though I arrived there at noon they didn't have any of their prepared hot dishes ready. Combos started at $5.99 for a meat item with rice (more expensive if you want more than 1 item).
I was even more disappointed when they said they didn't have any Halo-Halo the day I came. I really wanted some Halo-Halo :(
So I saw this little square of cake in their freezer section. It had multiple layers and looked a bit like a Napoleon Cake. It was wrapped in cellophane and frozen. It didn't have a price tag on it, but I figured it was what maybe $3, $4 at most? Well, imagine my surprise when the cashier rang it up and it was $7.50 (!) - for a piece of cake the size of my palm!
Oh and did I mention that I had to stand at the cash register waiting for a long time while the cashier was chatting with another customer (they were chatting the entire time that I was there)? The cashier didn't even say to me I'll be with you in a sec or anything like that. After a while, the customer turned around and saw me standing behind him at the cash and apologized. The cashier never apologized.
Anyway, I took the piece of cake home and defrosted it in my fridge and then the moment of truth... was it good? Yes, but was it worth the price? No. The icing was definitely buttery. It tasted like hard sauce that people eat with plum pudding. There were nuts in the icing and in the cake. The layers were crunchy. I could see charging $7.50 for this dessert in a sit-down restaurant with some garnishes, but the price is steep for a frozen piece of cake wrapped in cellophane.
I will likely not come back. Looking at their grocery items in general, most were more expensive than at T&T. Small businesses are always at a disadvantage to larger companies when it comes to price, so they have to make up for it in other ways, like customer service. Given the prices are higher and I didn't receive good customer service, I don't see any reason to return.
They do have a parking lot behind the store with the entrance off of Highland Ave.
This is their second location, the first one is in Vanier. read more
