We interviewed several capable realtors as we made plans to sell our home on Capitol Hill - but Joel more than impressed us -- he blew us away. Do not trust this company's advertising. I signed a lease believing I would be staying in a quiet…read morehome in Washington, D.C., as shown on their website. In reality, I was placed in a basement under the owner's house, which had originally been a storage room converted into a rental space -- something they never disclosed. The unit was uninhabitable, with a mechanical room beside the bed producing over 70 dB of sudden industrial noise, making it impossible to sleep or live normally. They offered no real assistance or service, and when we were forced into a constructive eviction, they only mentioned an alternative unit far too late to be of any use. Worse, they lied to my bank, falsely claiming they had provided services and issued a refund -- none of which ever happened. I paid $6,030.24 for this experience. They then cut off all communication, refused any refund, and are still insisting to the bank that they owe nothing. This has been one of the worst experiences I have ever had. This company operates with deceptive advertising, no accountability, and total disregard for consumer rights. Be extremely careful -- this is a business that causes real harm to its tenants.

I'm hovering between 3.5 to 4 stars for this company. This company does long term housing leases…read morefor people coming to the DC area for work assignments and I stayed for 3 months. Cons: 1. I didn't get instructions on how to get into my property (has two electronic codes) until the day I checked in. I had warned them previously that my company will be sending the money by Thursday or Friday, and I needed to get into the property by Sunday. I also told them twice that I wanted this information because my flight lands at 9:00 PM and I may not arrive to the property until 10:30 PM due to baggage claim and other logistical things. As a woman in an unfamiliar city, I want to make sure I can get in and not linger outside. Luckily I got the codes, but I was little frustrated because it would have been good if they gave it to me by Saturday so I didn't have to scramble Friday (during work hours) and Sunday morning to try and get the info. 2. One of the electronic gates didn't end up working. It locked me out twice, and worse, it's at 8:00 PM (week of 10/24/2022). I called the after hours service and while I know I sounded frustrated (because I was outside in the cold for 30-40 minutes trying to get the door to unlock), the lady wasn't the most empathetic. When I told her I needed someone to come asap, she just spoke to me with a patronising tone. However, I was legitimately scared. It's surprising because as a woman, you should understand why another woman doesn't want to be locked out in the dark in a new and unfamiliar area. The service man, Demetrius, came to save the day multiple times. However, that door never got fixed properly which is concerning because anyone can enter that gate and a punch the apartment door's glass window (the door has an electronic key pad) to gain access to the dwelling. I was just told to not bother with the first gate anymore to prevent being locked out, so I did. I only lock it when I'm inside the apartment. 3. Apartment itself has a lovely structure. Great kitchen, solid granite/rock flooring, washer and dryer, and a modernish bathroom. The problem is the furniture. The settee couch has rips. The blue/grey sofa also has rips and a huge indentation in the middle where someone sat for too long. The bed in the one bedroom is squeaky and the pillows are poor-- some feathers are popping out. The mattress should be switched to a memory foam one for less noise and better sleep. The blanket has some stains, but luckily there's a duvet to cover it. 4. Some pest issues that were resolved. I found spider beetles, sow bugs, centipedes, and roaches once the exterminator went through the first time. I had to get them to come because I was bitten at night while sleeping (probably by the spider beetles). It wasn't bed bugs because the bites were too big and spread out for that. Luckily once the exterminator came a second time, all the bugs seem to be held at bay. These bugs are just quite persistent to staying around because it was a basement apartment and because of evolution. Pros: overall a responsive team. The leasing and sales departments (Karla in particular) were always very prompt and responsive. They helped with the bug issues quickly and responded to my needs to get different style invoices for work reimbursement. They also did any service calls fast. The apartment itself (which I found out later on) is not in the worst neighbourhood, but it does border some sketchier streets and there are some issues with mugging in the area, though nothing too terrible. I would recommend the company to others coming for long term stays and I even would recommend the apartment. Just do your research into the neighbourhoods in DC and definitely understand that basement apartments here have some pest control issues regardless.

It is nicely renovated and close proximity and walking distance to great places in the the D.C. area. Leasing Manager, Ms. Recita Wood has been great to work with. She has always been available to answer our questions via phone or email and expedite tenants' concerns or issues to be fixed if they arise. She always follows through. It has been a challenge for many of us during this pandemic and Ms. Wood has made the leasing process much easier and stress free. I recommend The Century to anyone looking for a new place they would like to call home.

The tenant lived in the property for a long time and somewhere along the way forgot that she was not the owner. The staff at HA Gill dealt with her patiently and effectively. When I went to sell the property HA Gill helped us navigate the process and was unfailingly helpful in the face of multiple challenges. Based on my experience I can recommend HA Gill and Son unreservedly.

This company, quite laughably, wrote a post pretending to be an outside reviewer starting the post by referring to H. A. Gill & Son as "this firm" and "their clients." It is obvious that this post (and likely all of the favorable posts that mention the firm's "over 188 year in business" were written by John Gill. He ends the fake review by saying, "THIS firm currently has over 800 tenants in the properties IT manages. WE have pleasant relationships with 99% of them." And the very last sentence is a classic John Gill quote...other reviewers have mentioned this in their posts about the condescending emails he sends tenants. He likes to refer to any person that requires him to fix a problem or do any work as bas apples. John says "Unfortunately, there are always a few bad apples with whom we do the best we can." The truth is, no John and company, you do not do the best you can. You are extremely unpleasant to work with, you are arrogant, condescending and outright combative and rude to your tenants. If I had more time I would be filing any and all official complaints I could against you. My partner and I rented from you for 2.5 years and every interaction I ever had to have with you was shocking. I am perplexed why anyone choses to continue working with you. The home we rented was lovely and well priced, but putting up with John's disparaging emails was more than I was willing to put up with. Good luck to any current and future tenants... I would not recommend.

He found just the kind of properties I would be interested within my very modest price range..and then, when I told him on Dec 1st that I needed to pick a property, put in an offer, sign a contract and close before the first of the year, he said "alright then!" and got it done. Beginning with a detailed presentation on Skype, he introduced himself from states away and made sure we understood the basics of the process to come. As promised, he was excellent at showing me homes in our price range and convenient to my sweetie's job. Not a single home was a stretch for the financial boundaries we had set, and he had a great deal of insight into what would be involved in updating the various properties. He also was understanding of our needs for a pet-friendly home.
