Only one person is at the till at anytime and with a line that travels 20 yards (not joking) it's the worse I've seen in years. In the past it took me 30-70 minutes to get seen for a 30 second transaction. The Brighton store is a disgusting place for customers. For example the one in Eastbourne and Cambridge is fully staffed and helpful, but in the Brighton store. Very understaffed and should be shut down.

Now on the lower ground floor of WHSmith, it resembles a dole centre. Squashed into the corner of Smiths, next to the stairs and escalators, it's void of life and sunlight - except for a long snake of disgruntled looking customers. I've had the misfortune to be stuck in the queue several times with parcels to post and believe me, the atmosphere sucks. How-ever many people are serving, you usually have to wait 5 to 10 minutes and at busy times, like the run-up to Christmas, you can wait as long as half an hour. Even the TV screen playing post office adverts on rotation can't distract from the fact, this is a horrible Post Office to visit at any time.

It kept asking if the first two characters were multiple combinations MVG... now, I speak far more clearly than most... then it said it needed the number and hung up on me. If your company uses Royal Mail, that will be a deal breaker for me.

The addition of a corner-shop style store in the front means you can pick up bits and pieces while doing your post, and the rather large number of desks for the small queuing area means you nearly always get seen immediately. In the end, it is just a post office, but it does what it needs to better than others. The corner-shop at the front of the post office is such a great idea that I'm surprised others haven't nicked this simple idea. All of the post office items are available to buy, as well as the typical corner shop bits and pieces, which is useful if I'm in a bit of a time crunch. That, combined with the great service here, makes this a great place to get your posting needs filled. When you do get through the corner shop, the post office area is much bigger than it needs to be. There are 4-5 desks crammed into the small space, meaning there is nearly always a free desk: a great service. The turnover also seems to be quite good: I've never waited more than about 30 seconds. In the end, the post office is a must-visit place: everyone has to post letters every now and again. However, this post office does seem to try a bit harder than most of the rest: the effort doesn't go unnoticed.

It's in quite a handsome building in a quiet residential street - Melville Road is opposite the Co-op, which is next to the 'Good Companions' pub. It's what they used to call a Crown Office, ie now owned by Post Office Ltd, and so offers the full range of postal services, insurance, savings accounts etc., as well as providing a small range of stationery. It also has a 24hr cashpoint - useful to know about if the others in the area run out of money, which they seem to do frequently. Staff are friendly and seem to know all their customers, but service can be a little slow at times - but then, friendly chatter is a dying art these days, so perhaps I shouldn't complain. And it is the only one in the area, so it's a case these days of 'use it or lose it'.

Not only that, but it had shut while I was queueing to use the ATM! Gah...! Thankfully this place stays open an extra little bit longer ('til 5:30 most days) so I was able to get the job done, and not worry about threats of electricity cuts coming through the post. As well as the more sympathetic opening hours, there's a good deal of stationary on offer and your standard selection of scratch cards and chocolate bars. The lady that works here was also exceptionally helpful and patient when going through all the details involved in paying bills by cash. It was also remarkably warm in the store, which (for this time of year) is as good a reason as you need to pop in off the street. There's also a bus stop a short walk away making it easy to travel to too!

I used to do a lot of selling on EBay, so always had packages and parcels to ship off to various places in the world. I always used this post office to send my goods. They have a lot of packaging items (bubble wrap bags etc) on sale which is really handy if you are sending an item. Whilst there are two post office counters out back you can expect a fairly long wait if you catch them at the wrong time of day. That being said, the staff are efficient and knowledgeable about all post office related processes. The shop is quite handy as well if you need random stationary, birthday cards or suchlike. As well as the expected sweets, drinks, crisps and tobacco products of a newsagent they have a limited selection of tinned food if you need the odd item. There is a corner shop vibe to the place which I like because it's not just a 9-5 job for the staff but their family business. This seems to come out in the service you receive and I would prefer to give my custom to these guys any day of the week.

However, the County Oak post office has greatly changed my view. I even offer to go on behalf of other people now as it's such a pleasant experience. Whether you want foreign currency, to package and post a parcel abroad, or to purchase those pesky stamps, the staff here will go out of their way to help and assist you, and always with a smile and a friendly word along the way. I really would advise people to use this branch (but only if you promise not to create a queue!), even if you have to travel here from another part of town. There is free parking right outside and it makes for a hassel free experience. There is even a newsagent style shop incorporated with a separate pay point. My only qualm is the price of a stamp - 50p for second class - when on earth did this happen??!! Maybe one day the local post office won't exist, but while it does we should support the good ones in any way we can.

Went back at the weekend and found they'd decided to close for the whole weekend. Returned on the Monday and waited 20 minutes for the single member of staff to serve the 11 people in front of me very slowly. When it was my turn, he had a rummage, said he couldn't find my parcel and told me to contact the courier (which was Royal Mail, haha). I refused to leave until he found the parcel, which he then did, handing me a blank piece of paper to sign (presumably there was no official documentation to sign because it was actually a "no signature required" parcel.) He then didn't believe it was my signature because it wasn't an illegible scrawl. If this was an experienced member of staff, shame on him. If he was a clueless newbie, shame on management for not supporting him. Never going back there.
