I was in the mood for some good ol' soul food since I was already in Portsmouth I decided to give District a try. My apologies once I started eating I forgot to take pictures of my food. First I had an order of wings which were a great mix of sweet and spicy. Only problem was we got majority drumsticks uugghhhhh I'm a flats girl!! And there was only 1 flat!!! I saw liver and onions on the menu but only as a snack, who makes liver and onions a snack??? I ordered 2!!! It was soooooo yummy!!! Im a bit bougie when it comes to my rice. I finally tried this place out. I got seated almost immediately, is always a good way to start. However, the server told me they were out of a few items I really wanted to try. I visited this place for the 1st time ever on Friday, April 15, 2022 for a lunch with a long time friend and mentor of mine. The food was EXCELLENT!!! The wait was a lil long for the food; but, was MORE THAN worth it. I definitely recommend the wings for an appetizer; they were tender, crispy, and seasoned perfectly. I went there today with my mother in law. We arrived around early dinner time. We both ordered sausage and rice to start. The food was hot n the sausage was too spicy from before. Ok so this little hidden gem is great. Melvin was our server and he was attentive and very good at his job. He served the whole room. Although small this is soul food at its finest. Huge portions and very tasty. I ordered the ribs with candied sweet potatoes and Mac and cheese. I do not prefer wet ribs but these were tasty, tender, falling off the bone, very tasty. Just don't! Went as a recommendation from a friend and now I'm questioning my friendship cause this ain't it. Wanted the meatloaf but they were out. Got the bbq salmon with rice and gravy instead (potato salad as my third side). Here's were things went wrong... The rice was bland, absolutely no salt, the gravy on said rice had noooo taste! The salmon is nothing more than fish doused with store bought bbq sauce. The potato salad tasted like refrigerator (don't act like you don't know what I mean...). The corn bread was probably the only thing I would recommend. The waitress asked if everything was ok after seeing my plate on the opposite side of the table, when I told her the rice and gravy had no taste she said they don't season the rice. I have never in my life eaten intentionally unsalted rice from a black "soul food" restaurant. If the salmon was seasoned I couldn't taste it over the bottled bbq sauce but I could smell a really fishy odor much stronger than you'd get from cooked salmon. There was no more questions asked, didn't have to speak with management or had any sort of confrontation. My waitress was pleasant, she simply took my plate, asked if I'd prefer something else (I said no) and returned with my check void of the salmon. When the District was on Green St. I always bought food for any occasion. I also sent others there because the menu was good. This was one of the last places I purchased food when my mom had surgery and prior to her passing. I did this because she loved crab cake and I wanted her last experiences here to be pleasant. However after this restaurant moved and reopened, I was celebrating my 29th wedding anniversary. My husband asked where I wanted to eat I chose the District because of their authentic crab cakes. They changed.. I received some heavily breaded frozen like item.. I was so disappointed. The prices have increased tremendously, there is actually a take out fee. Decided to try this new restaurant out last night and boy was I glad I came back to it. Was planning to check out some new places on Granby but circled back to Ptown. This place has a good location, off street parking and food to die for! The menu and food tastes SO similar to another place I used to love. The fried shrimp appetizer was fantastic and yes, I ate every piece of the breading that was so good. I ordered the crab cakes (2 large, mostly meat for $14 ) and my SO ordered the meatloaf. Both dinners were great, plentiful and just downright delicious...the cornbread, mac & cheese and collards - ummm ummm good. I can't find any other description to fit how happy I was eating my meal. Our server, Kiara, was very pleasant and attentive as well. My only non-positive comment would be to management (whom we never saw during our visit)...we had a very difficult time with table conversation due to extremely loud patrons standing in the middle of the dining area talking, sometimes shouting. The bar is right at the door entry and no sign to advise of self-seating through to dining side. The long to-go line looked like folks waiting on dining until someone advised of self-seating. My Nephew treated to this place and it was disgusting. I had the smothered turkey wings greens and Mac. The turkey was wet and soggy, I was expecting a crisp roasted texture. The gravy was scorched, the greens had more stems than leaves, and the Mac n' Chez was dry. I was told the cornbread was good. By now I've lost my appetite.
