One of the lasts Gems downtown. I have worked here for years and it's one of the only places the made it through Covid. They have the best lunch special in maybe all of downtown. Half a chicken and two sides for $16.00. The chicken is phenomenal and the Brussel sprouts the balsamic glaze are equally as delicious. This along with the cute market aesthetic and smooth jazz playing lightly in the background makes it one of my favorite lunch places downtown. Staff is also very friendly and welcoming. I was on a walk downtown with my dog, and we both were overheating and hadn't had dinner so I happened upon a great empty patio awaiting us. I have been to the other their concepts throughout the years but this was my first visit here. I was unaware there were separate styles of service at the location. So it was an awkward intro but once we got it figured out we were able to be fully accommodated. I would suggest signage especially with so many newbies, transplants and travelers downtown. On to the service. It was great our waiter was attentive and he even grabbed a dog bowl of water for Bentley. For dinner I started with the calamari, aperol spritz, and had the chipotle chicken to finish it out. They even accommodated by adding a grilled chicken breast for Bentley upon request. We enjoyed our dinner and everything was tasty. My only critique is just a touch more salt to bring out the flavors they developed. Again service was attentive, pleasant, some staff even came over to meet Bentley before we left, and they had tap pay which was great since we had walked in from the heights and I only had my phone. If you find yourself in this part of downtown looking for lunch on the weekday, you can't beat the District Market's $12 lunch special. There's a few entrees you can choose from, but I like the half chicken, which comes with 2 sides, compared to the 1 with other entrees. The chicken is juicy and piping hot. I ordered the brussel sprouts almondine and truffle fries. Both were great choices, it can be easy to screw up the sprouts and I think they did a good job roasting it to the right level, the sweet balsamic-y glaze was bomb. The fries are nice and thick, a little on the oily side but tasty none-the-less. Service was okay, you order at the counter. The burgers my colleagues ordered came by quickly but the two chickens took quite a bit longer than normal. I think they could have proactively let us know it was gonna take a while. "Maaaa(rket), the Meatloaf!" The good news is that I had a delicious, healthful, and affordable meal. The bad news is that they forgot to put my order in, and after waiting in a nearly-empty restaurant for 45 minutes, I checked on my order, and found it was never submitted to the kitchen. Fortunately, they willingly agreed to give me a free dessert for the inconvenience. I would definitely go back if I were in Houston more often, because the food and ambiance was nearly perfect! I had the Turkey Bison Meatloaf, Side Salad, and Brownie. They explained the meatloaf was actually meatloaf lasagna which almost scared me off, because I try not to eat many processed carbs like pasta, but fortunately it turned out to be mostly lean (but not dry) meatloaf held together by a few lasagna noodles, and topped with a bright, slightly spicy marinara, and fresh basil. I might have improved it with a little more cheese, but it was good enough that I barely missed that. The portion size was generous. The salad was large and plain. The brownie was good but not great. Healthful, flavorful, affordable food made this one of the best tasting restaurant meals I've had in a long time! read more

Lmao $8 for one slice of cake, and the size of one slice is so pathetic, I initially thought the two uncut slices in the case together were one slice. What is this, Marie Antoinette's chop-n-shop special? As far as the market section goes, this place doesn't have anything Phoenicia doesn't except higher prices, but it's on the north end of downtown - which is a plus. Prices aside, the stuff they do have in the market section is good. If you're out of a basic staple like rice, or want some cheese to snack on, or need a lemon to cook with or garnish a cocktail, you're in the right place. You'll get upcharged a bit, but not by too much, and in this case, it really is a convenience fee. Unfortunately, when it comes to packaged foods, they do favor hoity-toity organic stuff at the expense of more affordable basics. But weighed against the time and cost of going all the way to a supermarket, it's worth it if you only need a few things. The main trick here is figuring out what's needlessly overpriced, and actually what's worth buying here in order to save yourself a trip out of downtown. Went to The District after work for happy hour drinks and stayed for dinner. Had a FANTASTIC server - Tareq (aka TK). His customer service and attention is why we stayed longer and had a wonderful night out on a Wed. First, we started with the Kale & Spinach artichoke dip as appetizer. I was worried the kale would overpower the flavor, but it was really good! Paired with the house red wine for only $6 on HH - and I was a happy camper! Then ordered the House Signature Dry-Aged burger. OMG! I ordered medium and received a juicy, flavorful burger topped with brie, bacon, and mushrooms (I requested no onions). I mean- wow! I chose the side salad instead of fries but my friend told me fries are also amazing. Since I work down the street, can't wait to go back and try more things! The reason I'm giving this place 3 stars is because I felt like the place was dirty. Even though it looked like it was meant to be a bit higher class than other nearby restaurants, the windows were dirty and the tables and loots didn't seem clean. I really was turned off my this when I came in. We came in and were seated quickly. The server was very nice and attentive, recommending us appetizers and meals to try. I have to say the kale dip was delicious; it was creamy and the chips tastes fresh and home made and baked. I recommend trying this. The calamari was also good, but I think my coworkers were a bit turned off by the rentable, personally I loved how it tasted and it was something different. I recommend it. I wanted the panko chicken with the chipotle chicken sides. They were able to switch out the chickens to make me what I wanted. I have been a long time lover of sister restaurant, District 7, and finally gave The District a try several months back. Our visit then was great. Great service. Good food, though we ordered things that were the same or similar to D7 items. I had zero complaints. Fast forward to today. I had a pretty lousy experience. I ordered through UberEats, waited long enough to becoming ravenous, only for our order to arrive without my lunch. UberEats CS is THE WORST. They could do nothing but offer a refund within 5 days. Wouldn't send out for a new delivery replacement. Nothing. So I called the restaurant. The girl who answered the phone was rude, unhelpful, and lied to me about why my item was missing. So I asked for a manager. And HE is solely responsible for the reason The District is getting 4 stars instead of two. He walked me through what homegirl said absolutely not being the case. He apologized profusely. He was polite, never getting agitated by how annoyed I was. And when Uber still couldn't do what I wanted, he offered to handle the situation on their end with the best solution he could offer and threw in a dessert. Customer service is everything. Our food that was delivered was subpar today (delivery often is, so not holding it against them), but the care exhibited by management totally rebounded the experience. And I'm happy to be retained as a customer. read more

*** Update *** I want to update my review this morning, as quite surprisingly the money I was double charged not even 10 hours ago has already refunded. While the error was an unfortunate way to end what was an otherwise lovely night celebrating my wife's bday, I do respect the managers handling of the situation. He was on the phone immediately with the card processor or bank and did obviously do everything he could to return my 200 bucks. It sucks when you have to tell a customer of such an error, but he kept a cool demeanor especially considering the rest of the group who did get rather heated. No matter, mistakes happen and the manager Steve made right and did exactly what he said. I'll definitely give them another chance in the future, as we do always enjoy the food at District7's locations, the service has just been sort of all over the place over the years which is frustrating. Now to the food, we got the charcuterie board, crawfish hush puppies, raw and grilled oysters both local and east coast, spinach artichoke dip, a bison and mushroom pizza, wings and the Berkshire pork chop. All delicious, and cooked as you'd expect. They also had some fun on the patio setting the birthday desert on fire. It was a nice surprise for my wife and the cheesecake was an awesome end to the night. The one real quip I had for what was another wise fairly accommodating service staff, I never did get a second cocktail.. asked the dude twice, and he totally forgot me. Everyone else in the group was quite lubricated by the end, so it's not like we didn't get service, just not my night apparently. If only the server knew how far my fingers would type having not gotten my second drink lol and then the check.. Anyway, alls well that ends well, I ate well and had a good time with our friends, can't be mad at that. Can you say Oysters Galore! The District is located on Main street in Downtown Houston. They do not have valet but you can valet across the street for $11 or park in the garage and walk for $5. The atmosphere was very chic with an upbeat atmosphere. The service was amazing! I had multiple servers ask me and my friend how we were doing and made us feel so welcomed! The nose-tickling French 75 was the gate way to a perfectly integrated combination of floral gin and citrus. I would highly recommend this drink. It's strong but delicious. Second visit, I ordered half and half Lemon Garlic and Bacon Jam oysters. Neither had enough of their respective flavoring. The bacon was awesome, but missing the jam! First of all, the food was fantastic. I want to score it better for this alone because it really was good, but there are some things keeping the score low. My husband and I were visiting Houston for the day from Austin and popped into The District for lunch on a Monday. We were told we could sit anywhere we liked, so we took a spot outside. It wasn't very busy. We waited. And waited. And began to stare longingly through the window hoping to be seen. As the place began to steadily fill up, we weren't the only people outside still waiting for even a menu. Literally every table got up and went inside to grab someone at some point, since nobody had even stepped foot outside for about 20 minutes at this point. If the patio is open and you allow self-seating, it's pretty important (especially during lunch hour when people are pressed for time) to pay attention to that space. We nearly got up to leave when someone came by to bus a table and told us he'd send someone out shortly. Our server was new, and while I empathize a lot with getting to know a brand new job and menu, service was still incredibly slow. After getting the menus, sans a drink menu, it was still a bit of a wait for her to come back and take our drink order and get a question answered about the oysters. Our appetizers came out mere seconds before our meals, and despite it being lunch time my husband was given a dinner entree and it was not what he ordered--he was given the short rib dinner rather than the lunch portion parpadelle, a price difference of $4. We waited for someone to come back and check so we could sub it in, but eventually we realized nobody was coming and we ate our lunch. I know it probably was on us to get up and go inside, but in most restaurants the server will ask how things are. Nobody came. When our plates were empty the server returned and we notified her of the error. We were not offered a refund or a price adjustment, but one of our beers was comped. I find this strange, but at least they did something I guess? The food was incredible, I adored my shrimp and grits and my oyster shooter was delicious. If we find ourselves in Houston again it's likely we'll try again because the oysters were fresh and amazing. I visited this spot on a Sunday for brunch for a birthday celebration. The decor is beautiful and great for pictures. The restaurant was empty so there was a lot of seating. I ordered from the restaurant menu which was 20 a person. We ordered mimosas for the table. The staff was friendly. My first first course was shrimp and grits and the 2nd course was a Greek omelet with grits on the side. The food was average. When we tried to split separate checks at the end it was a hassle which resulted in waiting awhile for the waiter to figure it out. Overall the experience wasn't horrible just average. Wait staff was attentive; food was...edible. The Saturday brunch crowd was nonexistent, so we didn't have to wait to be seated. They've got a huge outdoor area that's really well shaded and dogs are allowed. We ordered the avocado Benedict and the braised-beef Benny. This place is AWESOME! The service is great, Rod took excellent care of us. The owner even stopped by and chatted with us about the wine bar they were working on opening. Can't wait to hit that up! Like most Southern style eateries, the dishes are HUGE! You'll have leftovers but no complaints, I have a small stomach and ended up with paella and Brussels sprouts for two days after and it was just as good. My family and I came here for a birthday celebration! The menu has a great variety so I was really excited to try this place out. For appetizers, we got grilled oysters with have being bacon jam and the other half being lemon garlic. The better of the two was definitely the lemon garlic so don't miss out on trying those! They were both delicious though. For another appetizer, we got tuna tartare! The tuna tasted fresh and the sweet soy sauce for sauce and the avocado were a great complement. For entree I got the osso bucco which was so much meat!! It was delicious and good sized. The truffle risotto that came with it was just a good risotto, but I didn't taste the truffle. It should've been a more powerful flavor. The asparagus was yummy but I wish there were more of it on the plate! The dessert , banana bread pudding was good! Anything that comes with a little ice cream is always a nice way to end a meal. Overall, delicious food. I will definitely come back for the oysters, especially since it's $15 for a dozen grilled oysters. Compared to other places, the price isn't bad for that (especially compared to the prohibition just a couple blocks away). The downfall is that the service. I was there Oct 29th, 2019 (a Sunday) with about ten of my Sorority Sisters and the restaurant was not busy at all, we were seated right in front of the door, which I think that with a large party they could have arranged the table in a different location, it was cold and everytime e door was opened a cold breeze ran through. Also just when other customers came in were right in the walking path. Everyone ordered and this is where it was difficult. Again not busy that day aside for a large party in another part of the restaurant, the server took everyone's order just fine so I thought, well I asked for the burger and when it arrived it had no bun. I looked at the plate and said this was not my order. He said to me " Yes it is" I replied no because I didn't see a burger just a plate full of fries with jalapenos all over. He looks down and says "Oh you wanted a bun?" I replied "Yes" and he basically walked away and I hear him say " Ok calm down already." One of the ladies at the table ordered chicken fried chicken and had to ask several times for the white gravy that comes with it and others at the table complained about the food being cold. This place has beautiful floor to ceiling windows, a large outside patio with white draping and great ambiance. The manager, Steve, is quite friendly and a joy to work with. We visited The District to celebrate a new addition to our team at work. There is seating both inside and outside, but it's Houston and next to the train, so we sat indoors. I could see myself sitting in the patio area in the middle of winter when it's less than 90 degrees. The staff is very friendly, welcoming, and great at helping make dining decisions. We went on a Friday evening and surprisingly enough, it was pretty empty for dinner. But it wasnt long before we understood why...the kitchen takes FOREVER to push out entrees. We waited upwards of 45 min for calamari and then another 30 min for our main dishes. Since we didn't have anything else planned we didnt mind as much, but if we were on any kind of schedule this would not have worked.
