From the moment you board this beautiful, super clean boat, your safety, comfort, fun and fish becomes the focus. Captain Troy and Deck hand Jacob are knowledgeable, organized, extremely hardworking, and put your fishing fun first and foremost. They chilled our waters/Gatorades, let us ride up where Capt. Troy drives the boat (in comfy A/C) where you get a spectacular view, relax in the air conditioned cabin below, or sit "out back" where the fishing happens. Best friend (BF) and I opted for the 6 hour trip with the goal to get our limit of red snapper. I was concerned that that the duration may be too long. It wasn't. I highly recommend the 6 hour trip - it gets you out to where the best fish are! It was super-smooth sailing to the first location to "drop bait" and we did. Within 90 seconds both of us had our first catch! It was unbelievable - beautiful red snapper! Their super-lightweight rods/reels were easy to "Learn" and easy to use. BF and I lost count of the fish we caught somewhere around 24. Not being regular fisher people, had these rod/reels been heavy, we probably would have pooped out and not caught as many fish. Later, we got two trigger fish and a mackerel. My personal biggest thrill was having sharks on the line two separate times, both of which broke the line and "got away." Jacob was a pro at quickly re baiting, replacing hooks when the fish would take the hooks, and preparing the rods for the next type of fish we would go for. He ensured we had lines in the water, fishing, at every opportunity. It was delightful to see dolphin swim close to the boat and BF saw sea turtles, but I missed that. Capt. Troy is an established expert in boating and running a smooth organization. Everything about Distraction is top notch. The marina is beautiful and has a nice gift shop where you can purchase any last minute items you may need. Jacob cleaned all our fish upon returning to the marina and Capt. Troy referred us to several restaurants where they prepare the fish for us. The "girls" caught dinner and we had a lovely, fresh caught meal served "family style" nearby, with plenty to bring home! BF who has taken her family on many "party boat cruises" and owns her own ski boat vowed to book Distraction for her family, since it eclipsed the party boat experience in every way. We had an amazing, memory-making, 6-hour trip with Distraction Charters today! My husband, Nick, and I were treating our parents to a first time deep sea fishing adventure. Captain Troy and deckhand, JT, were friendly, fun, and made us feel like family. We originally had the trip planned for yesterday, but due to stormy weather we had to postpone. Captain Troy kept us informed and gave us several options to reschedule. Safety, comfort, and our overall experience was his top priority. We were excited to go out the following morning. We were greeted with smiling faces and a clean, well maintained vessel. It has a comfortable, air conditioned cabin, which was a great retreat from the heat. While trolling, we caught a king mackerel that made for a delicious dinner. You definitely have to try the heifer dust! Then we went out for some fun catch-and-release due to the season. We caught red snapper and cobia, saw dolphins, a leatherback turtle, and a couple of bull sharks. Distraction Charters is definitely a family friendly charter. Absolutely amazing! We had a great time with Captain Troy and his helper Sam. Troy let my son sit up by the wheel, and let him steer around for a bit. We caught lots of fish, and the Kids learned a lot about life and safety around the water. I've been deep sea fishing in the Dominican Republic and Oceanside, California. Both trips had horrible Captains and Deck Hands. We flew from San Diego California to Orange Beach, Alabama to try out Distraction Charters because my Father-in-law highly recommended them. Form the first moment meeting Captain Troy he had us all laughing and getting excited about fishing the Gulf. He and his deck hand Stephen were professional, helpful and made good conversation. I am not a seasoned fisherman but with the help of the crew I was fighting and pulling in Red Snapper all day. The sea was a little rough but Captain Troy kept the boat centered over the fishing holes so that we could enjoy our time. On our way in I pulled in a King Mackerel that gave me a great fight and honestly made me look forward to another deep sea fishing trip. When we docked, the deck hand cleaned and filleted our catch and packed it on ice. Also Captain Troy gave us a DVD video of our entire trip that was being filmed from an camera over looking the back of the boat for free. We did some research looking for a charter boat to take six of us out fishing before deciding on Distraction. I was very pleased with our choice. We were warmly met by Captain Troy, his college age son and a very helpful deck hand. Troy showed us the boat (very spacious and clean) before explaining his safety procedures. After an enjoyable ride out to the reef, with amazing views of the coast, we commenced to fish. Our group consisted of rookie-knowledgable fishermen, so Stephen, the deck hand, showed everyone how the custom fishing gear worked ( very nice - well cared for equipment) My bait wasn't in the water before one of our party shouted out "I have one" which turned out to be a large 12+ pound Red Snapper - one of many. Troy took pictures of each one of us holding up our "trophies" as well as group photos. While I chatted with him on the way back to the dock, he burned a CD of the pictures as well as a DVD of our entire fishing experience. Amazing! I grew up deep sea fishing. My dad would bring me down from Columbus, GA to the gulf starting when I was just 8 years old. We'd push away from the dock at 2 AM, cruse out for 4 hours, fish for 4 hours, and cruse back for 4 hours. I would highly recommend Captain Troy and Distraction Charters. It was a wonderful experience for our family. With the exception of my husband, my kids (16 & 20) and I had never gone deep sea fishing before. In the initial meeting, Captain Troy told us that the trip was about us and what we wanted and he delivered on that promise! Since we wanted to bring home some fish, he made sure we caught 5 King Mackerels before going further out to catch and release red snappers, which were sadly out of season. Stephen and Captain Troy did a great job quickly teaching us how to fish, even telling us how long to drop our lines to ensure maximum success. Our 16-year-old daughter wasn't too thrilled initially about fishing or handling fish, but by the end of the trip she was baiting her own hook and proudly holding up the fish she caught for photos. Both she and our son thanked us for such a great experience, but the real credit goes to Captain Troy and Stephen. At the end of our trip, Captain Troy presented us with a video and pictures from our outing. The video is amazingly clear and vivid. What a great way to spend the day! FISHING with Capt Troy and deckhand Corey! Originally, booked the day fishing for my husband, sons and grandsons and last minute decided I would like to come along and enjoy watching the boys doing some fishing. Much to my surprise, I threw in a line as well and managed to pull out a fish. The highlight for me was the dolphins I must confess. There were a herd of 5-6 dolphins around the boat at one point. They are such amazing animals and I think they like Capt. Troy. I have nicked named Captain Troy the "Fish Whisperer" if you get the chance to charter with him you will know why that's his nickname for me. Book early! We went on a 6 hour trip and brought in plenty of fish but not only that, we caught the widest variety of fish I have ever seen. We brought in white snapper, red snapper, trigger fish, ruby lips, vermillion snapper, and wait for it... a bonita, a King Mackeral, a 25 lb Amber Jack, and... an 8 ft reef shark. Troy is good about making sure everyone was safe he was polite and there was always someone around to give a helping hand we caught plenty of fish we even saw a small shark and the truip is long enough that it's truest enjoyable but it's short enough that as long as you wear sunscreen you have to worry too much about any burns. And the best part is that the weather was pretty bad and our schedule was pretty tight and Troy found a safer day to go out that also worked out even better than our original plans.
