I've had the opportunity use Distinctive Tile for three separate jobs over the last 18 years. I have to say they are no longer the same company they were when I first employed them for my home tiling. My most recent (2023) experience was disastrous and extremely unsatisfactory. The current owner(Larry) is essentially absent. unreachable and unresponsive. His interests are clearly elsewhere and he's left the business responsibilities to others. Those with whom you do interact are unreliable as evidenced by their failure to complete our bathroom remodel necessitating hiring independent tiling subs to complete the job. Their default mode is to blame the owner for measurement errors, tiling order under estimates and work delays in general. For my job, they purchased a tile style that was a discontinued item. When they ran out of the necessary amount of tile, they could not complete the job! Eventually we were forced to hire a lawyer to settle. I caution anyone thinking of choosing Distinctive Tile to think again and not choose them based on their past reputation Although they did a fine job on my original project, they are of inferior quality now and should be avoided at all cost. There are other options in the Portland, Maine market. I would choose those. read more

I walked in to see about having Distinctive Tile & Design help me design and install a kitchen backsplash. When I walked in, I was the only customer, and the single employee working did not greet me. When I walked over to her and told her what I was looking for, rather than show me anything at all in the gorgeous showroom, I was told to go home and google images of kitchen backsplashes. I got no sense that she wanted my business or that she enjoys providing customer service at all. read more

Truly disturbed by the customer service experience. Walked in 15 minutes before closing on a Saturday to start to take a look around. Staff person completely ignored us, walked away when we walked in and did not ask a single question. Totally dismissive and rude. read more

Over the last 4 years I've had the pleasure of working with Larry and the Distinctive Tile team in three of my residences, as well as watching them work with 4 of my friends' homes that I had referred to DT&D. As others have reported, this store has the most gorgeous tile and the broadest selection one can imagine. With that said, we won't be going back due to how rude the woman working in the store is. We had this experience a couple of years ago when tiling our hearth, but assumed it was a fluke. We went back today because we're starting a bathroom remodel, but the woman was just as rude as she was a couple of years ago. When we told her that we wanted to look around, she just stared at us for several seconds before apparently giving us permission. I'm disappointed to see that the owner knows that this is happening, but is not making any changes as a result of the reviews left on this site. With sadness for the loss of access to such beautiful tile, we'll take our business elsewhere. I can't imagine why anyone would want to go through life with such a sour attitude. read more

I cannot begin to describe the amount of gorgeous tile available here. It is hard to find this many choices under one roof. Yes, they do carry some pricey items, depends on the vendor and materials. But I also know from experience there are a ton of really affordable options as well-it just depends on what you are looking for. I have created some modern bathrooms as well as traditional kitchen backsplashes all from distinctive tile. Honest, reliable company! read more

Our initial experience was not the best. When my husband and I began working with staff at Distinctive Tile, we were treated as if we were an imposition. From there, we waited over THREE-MONTHS for our tile to arrive. When it finally arrived, we learned there was a miscommunication and additional materials needed to be ordered for our very small project. When installation finally happened, we were very pleased with the quality of the work. Our tile installer had over 15-years of experience, and he was incredibly meticulous, professional and pleasant. We also felt very "heard" by the owner of the company, as they generously compensated us for our inconveniences in the end. read more

Products: five stars! Follow up (calling back: 0 stars) Still waiting for a call back (over a year later) from Larry regarding a broken tile his tradesman left for us. We went to install grab bars but one of the ends of grab bar is in the field of broke cracked tile, which the same tradesman grouted all the tile leaving the cracked tile in place , We called and left word with Larry several times, we had paid for the work but wanted said broken tile replaced. But no call back. He's a likable guy on the front side but follow up after the fact was non existent. They have exquisite products but "spotty-non-existent" follow through on work done. Yelp is a joke. If anyone knew how much these people bent over backwards to accommodate and assist, there would be no question who is BY FAR the best tile shop around. People rarely review businesses online when they are satisfied. If I told you 1 in 100 customers have an issue, what would you say? Larry would say that ONE unsatisfied customer is too many. This man will one day literally work himself to death for his customers. He takes everything personally - this is his life. And his employees and associates are his family. I am giving it the two stars only because of the selection. Over three years I have attempted to do business with this establishment but it appears they can not be bothered. You must need an appointment because people get very annoyed if you ask for help. One woman even said "I am busy" not... "Let me get somebody to help you" when somebody did come over to help she could not be less interested and could offer no design help or alternate tile suggestions. Like the other reviewer, I also fell in love with Distinctive Tiles products and selection! A virtual candy store for the selective homeowner! We are building a new home and I specifically wanted New Ravella tiles - expensive and hard to find. I have stopped in twice and tried to schedule an appointment - my overall impression was that I was bothering them. I've called twice ( too busy to answer during business hours - ok but they assure you they will call back) and it's now been 3 business days with no response. I too will go to Old Port Specialty Tile which carries what I want but with a product Distinctive Tile doesn't carry - CUSTOMER SERVICE! read more

If giving "no star" were an option I would. Truly HORRIBLE customer service!! As a small business owner myself, I could not believe how rude they were. Upon entering, I was stared up and down & barely got a hello (no smile). Then I was completely ignored...no one even said goodbye when I left. I went to Old Port Specialty Tile and what a difference! They will get 5 stars and we will be purchasing thru them for all our remodeling projects. Ps ladies, you are selling tile...get over yourselves.... Add on...finished tile job with Old Port Specialty Tile & the customer service from start to finish was stellar (thank you Nadine)! We absolutely love the tile and couldn't be happier. I've got to say that it almost makes me feel better reading all of the other reviews knowing they ignore everyone who comes into the store. My husband and I bought beautiful tiles here for our kitchen remodel and we love them. That being said, the service at the store could not be worse. You wait forever, no one even acknowledges you exist and in fact it seems like they are avoiding eye contact. Selection is great, quality of the tiles they have are great, but we're going to try someplace else for our bathroom remodel. read more

I placed an order for a box of the same tile (8"x8" white satin finish) on July 8, 2013. The tile finally arrived and I picked it up on October 12, 2013 after experiencing 3 one month delays. Each time I was waiting for a call that the tile had arrived and after roughly 3 days following the date I was give, I'd have to call to find out if my tile had arrived. I would then receive a call back within a few days that it would be delayed another month. I was told 2 of the 3 times that the manufacture making the tile in Italy was shut down for the month of August and that was causing the delay. I realize the retailer has little to no control over the manufacture, though they certainly have control over following up with me instead of me having to call them each time to see if my tile had arrived. The tile finally arrived and I picked it up on October 12, 2013 and when I arrived home and opened the box quickly realized the tile did not match. I immediately returned to the store with the new box of tile and one tile from the box I had purchased from them previously. The individual certainly agreed that the tile did not match and said they would call the representative on Monday since this was a Saturday and the representative would be unavailable. This individual also never once said they were sorry for the inconvenience or even attempted to apologize especially knowing I'm now 3 months into purchasing this tile and it didn't match. I even left one of my good (matching) tiles for them to compare with the new box and show their representative. At this point, I asked for a refund which was refunded without any question. Again, never once did I ever hear any word acknowledging my frustration in dealing with purchasing one box of tile. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday all came and went and I never once received a call from this company with an update on what was going on with the tile I had purchased from them. I returned to the store on Saturday (1 week after I had originally picked up the tile I had ordered) to pickup my one tile I had left with them to compare with the new box that did not match. To my surprise there was another individual working this Saturday who allowed me to express my complete frustration with this entire purchasing experience. This was the first time I actually felt listened to with some empathy for the long and painful process this has been. An apology was given and this person took personal accountability to ensure they had my number and promised to get back to me on Monday. To my surprise and excitement, this individual did call me back on Monday and confirmed that the manufacturer had changed the Die Lot for this tile and that reordering the tile would not work. They also informed me that they had located the matching tile I had from another company and provided me with all the information I needed to purchase the tile directly from this other retail company. I was able to purchase the tile at a cost of 40% more than I had originally purchased and in additional purchased the 2 remaining boxes available knowing how difficult it has been to match my white 8"x8" floor tile. In the end, I have to say this was a terrible customer buying experience both from the lack of customer service as well as dealing with a retail company who purchases tile from a manufacturer that apparently is not very reliable. read more
