I was excited to check out something that was the same but different. Finding the place was a bit of a challenge, as the other reviewer said, its stashed away in a strip mall. Once I got in, the first thing that hit me was how well set up and organized it was. Very nice. I knew going in there were going to be differences and it was great to learn some tweaks to the techniques I'm familiar with. Everyone was super friendly and welcoming, I mean everyone, front desk person, students in the class, instructor all were super welcoming and very willing to share their knowledge. Wish I had stuck around for another night, and if I lived in the area I definitely would train here. It's clean, and i definitely would recommend it.

The people who practice here are focused on learning, and sharing the experience with others in an environment of appreciation for each other and respect for the practice. People coming here are helped to overcome personal doubts and develope through the practice of Aikibudo greater confidence and trust in themselves. I have a love for martial arts but have a dislike for competitions or the environment of one upmanship that can sometimes be inseparable from a location that focuses on competition. Renshinkan Dojo is the answer I found.

I met the founder of…read moreJiyushin-ryu Aikibudo (CE Clark) in 2005 after years of online correspondence and discussion and recognized immediately that, ever 10 years of practicing Aikikai Aikido through numerous senior teachers in the US and from Japan, this form of aikido practice was the one for me. This dojo started as the Jiyushinkan (the main hombu or home dojo of the organization) under CE Clark and Aaron Clark. When the leaders of the organization relocated to Seattle (along with the Jiyushinkan name), the former dojo's senior students and instructors inherited the dojo and it was renamed to the Renshinkan. I have been visiting this dojo at one to four times a year for clinics or regular training from California consistently since 2005 and find the instruction to be amongst the best in the country for a highly effective study of the principle and what makes aikido in this form an effective art without the need to create unnecessary pain, utilize excessive muscle or speed, but still not asking your attacker to cooperate with your technique to make it work correctly. I will be back for a visit soon!

I am hugely impressed with both the rigor, yet also the individual motivation - the instructor and black belts motivate the students to find their own inner reasons for excellence - and all of the kids from littles to grown support each other. I have always heard that when choosing a martial arts school, choose the right instructor vs the art form itself and I believe Benjamin Ferguson is the right instructor. Anyone who can motivate kids of all abilities and ages to strive for their best without resorting to coercion or external rewards is the right person in my experience. Tao Martial Arts is outstanding!

Sensei keeps switching the schedule weekly or monthly, therefore our family, having many other commitments can't make it to class, I've never heard of any academy that changes schedules so much, so often. Our other children (we have 5) have all been in martial arts for years without a single change in schedule. Pandemic is over, not sure why it keeps changing, and they oftentimes tell us the day of, or the day before, or that week, when we have our whole month planned out. Keep the schedule as is and don't change it, please! 2. Neighborhood doesn't feel safe at all, run-down shopping center... Other than that, amazing Sensei!

Very little advertising or other overhead, so he can avoid charging his students through the nose. And no contracts. Sensei Hughes is presently a 5th degree black belt with Shorinryu Shorinkan, training under some of the premier martial artists alive today (including most recently Doug Perry and Eddie Bethea). The art he teaches is Okinawan Karate, taught as it has been for hundreds of years. If you want tournaments and trophies, this is not the school for you. No flips or other flowery routines. This one is about self defense, pure and simple. And while some time is spent on self defense techniques, all of these are derived from kata. Kata is not just a dance, it is a way to ingrain sequences of movements to the point where you do them without thinking about it. Those sequences can disable or devastate, depending on the situation. THAT is where the self defense really comes from. And developing it takes time. This is what we focus on. Kata, and applications of the different movements in the katas. There are several katas, and various techniques within each to keep it interesting! We also do weapons (for which there is no extra charge!!). I have been training with sensei for over three years now and am a blue belt (that's the 5th color, there are five more promotions to reach black). If you want trophies, or an expensive workout, there are many schools that can do that. If you want to learn real, practical self-defense, this is one of the best schools in the Valley. After my previous "training" at schools of dubious quality I consider myself fortunate to have found this one.

He breaks-down a defensive move slowly and explains it. He'll show how it was done in the old days on Okinawa, then show multiple variations. He talks about bullies and street thugs and the psychology behind their approach, leading me to believe he has firsthand knowledge of dealing with such individuals. If you live anywhere near Chandler, AZ and are interested in the martial arts, you owe it to yourself to stop by and observe a class or better yet join. It's a small school, but the level of instruction if very high.
