We found Discover Kayak and Steve through a search in our local area for basic kayak instruction for our Girl Scouts to accomplish their paddling badge. First, working with Steve was so easy and relaxed! As you can imagine, coordinating a kayak trip with Texas weather and multiple involved Girl Scouts posed a bit of a logistical nightmare but Steve was understanding all along the way! He was understanding when we dropped a few girls and added one back on and when weather canceled us the first few times he was very clear and quick with the communication. Second, Steve was incredibly informative and patient with our Girl Scouts. This was a group of girls ages 11-15 but most of our group fell into the 11-12 year old range. He kept the girls on task and made sure they were watching at the important parts without coming across as too tough. Best kayaking experience ever! We had an extremely fun experience with Steve. He is skillful, patient and very friendly to us. We had a group of 20 people and he managed to lead us the entire trip. Awesome time with my daughter! My daughter and I took the basic kayaking lessons with Steve. Class ratio was 6 students to 1 instructor. Steve is a very great instructor who gives you the confidence to kayak and also has the patience if you're a slow learner. Pricing is very reasonable for the basic kayak lesson. He sent us a reminder to confirm the trip. Location is at Lake Grapevine. Parking wasn't an issue. There are porta potties near by. Steve can also provide a life vest to borrow if you don't have one. So fun! Our first time, great experience, you learn quickly, and owner is super nice and enthusiastic about his work. The day was perfect, cool and sunny, water was smooth. We had a great time kayaking Lake Grapevine with Steve at Discover Kayak. It helped that it was a beautiful, breezy day but he did a great job catering to all levels. We had two adults and two kids, some experienced kayakers and some first timers. Steve was very laid back and let everyone go at their own pace while ensuring we stayed together enough for him to keep track of everyone. He runs the business himself and answers questions quickly plus sends confirmation email and directions the night before. I also love how flexible his signup policy is - you sign up in advance but pay no deposit and no penalty if you end up cancelling. Paying is easy via Foursquare and he holds your valuables while you kayak. It's basically just show up and have a great, relaxing time on the lake! Steve is a great teacher, knowledgeable and patient. My husband, sister and I took the basic class and have taken a couple of guided tours since. Each time Steve has been great, even towing other kayakers when they needed help. We are going to take the intermediate lesson and learn to roll classes, too! Our family group of 4 purchased two tandem kayaks, 2 hour tour groupons, and had a wonderful time. We had used the city's groupon offer a year ago so we were very familiar with the area. Reservations are recommended and we secured ours with ease. We were given good directions to the operations, as there is no signage on the road in or at entrance gate. Steve of Discover Kayak provided excellent kayak basics and unlike the other outfit, reassured us that they were nearby and would also help us gauge time as the beauty of Lake Grapevine and the joy of kayaking can sometimes make you lose track of time. Driving 50 minutes with 10 people for a tour planned well in advance and the guy was a no show. I called him after waiting for 10 minutes thinking we were in the wrong place. He's run into some issues with the park and forgot to inform us. While I understand the reasons for his cancellation, taking into account all the communications we had prior to the actual event, it was extremely disappointing and Inconvenient that we were not informed much earlier in the day when he was notified he'd have to alter our plans. Booked a two hour tour for my wife's birthday. She loves the outdoors. Booked online and spoke with someone at the office. Ensured they could accommodate all 5 of us. I received a confirmation email. Showed up 30 minutes prior. No one was there. Just the trailer with kayaks. We waited over an hour. I called and emailed. Owner Steve got back to me and apologized for making a mistake. He offered to take the family out another time on him. Very solid gesture. Unfortunately our kids were leaving for a visit to relatives so my wife could only take them prior to departing. Learned how I have been kayaking wrong all of my life and some rescue tips etc.. Steve and his brother Dave are great and so is their staff. Took an Awesome 3 hour SUP (Stand Up Paddleboard) lesson from Steve! Within 2 hours we knew what to look for when we buy or rent equipment, SUP safety and hazards, could maneuver with confidence and turn quickly, and learned how to use our core instead of our arms so we didn't get tired as fast.
