We didn't get to see the penguins in action because they were sleeping but the alligator, sharks, eels, starfish, and jellyfish were there to entertain! Do take the opportunity to walk above the sharks! I appreciate how wheelchair accessible most of the exhibits were. You can still do the touch exhibits in comfort too. The caretakers are super friendly and knowledgeable about the creatures they support so it was nice to hear from them instead of reading each description. I cannot wait to go back!

First, this zoo is very large in terms of walking time and animal exhibits. It's very spread out, meaning lots of walking to see it all. We welcomed that, as more space equals more animals. The first thing that we saw and really liked was the Cheetah experience near the beginning. A quick 15-minute show that showcases a porcupine, serval cat and two cheetahs. The seating area fills up quick so be sure to arrive a good 15 minutes before the start time if you want a seat with good viewing. Another cool exhibit that I really enjoyed was the small cat house that was entirely in the dark. Only dimly lit, this was a unique look at many small species of cats that thrive nocturnally. I've seen many of these cats before, but never in a dark exhibit like theirs. It's very cool. One thing that was a head-scratcher was the number of exhibits that said 'closed' or 'animal not for view today' (or something like that). There were far too many exhibits like this, and that's what drove our experience down. The Australia exhibit was also a disappointment. One kangaroo, and he was in the housed area. No other animals in the open area after walking down there, and only penguins on the other side. I've been to small zoos with a far better Australia presence. I don't want to knock this zoo too hard, it's a good zoo with a lot to see and do. I would say my rating is more based on comparison to other zoos of this size and even smaller.

The festivals are always a hit. A couple summers ago the Louis Prima band was there, which was excellent! Very entertaining. The levee mall area lacks foot traffic fluidity. The feng shui is so off, even outside of it. We haven't gone to bowl (can you access it from inside the mall?) and it's been forever that we've gone to the theater to catch a movie. The aquarium is for families, which you see a lot of in this area. There are a couple restaurants around the area that we like but AT the levee we can pass pretty much all them. They have fish for all levels of fishkeepers, but we're beginners, so we stick with the smaller community fish for now. We purchased a lot of beautiful rainbows, swords, hatchets, corys, and tetras here and months later, they're all doing great in our tank. A&E seems to get new shipments every Thursday/Friday. If you're looking for a particular fish, call them on Wednesday to see if they have it in stock or will be getting it in that week's shipment. The interior of the shop is not pretty. A&E is definitely focused on caring for their fish and their customers, not keeping the front of the shop aesthetically pleasing. So don't walk through the front door and leave without checking the tanks. The beautiful fish keep us coming back. FYI: On my last trip here I learned that A&E will draw a big X across the front of tanks that have a sick fish inside. Fish in tanks with the X are not for sale. I was glad to know they care so much about caring for the fish as well as not selling sick fish to customers and spreading illness to other tanks. There's a shark tank in the back with 3 sharks and a huge grouper. My 18 month old isn't very interested in the sharks but she loves watching that grouper. There is parking behind the shop.

We went on the Captain's Lunch Cruise on a sunny but chilly day in late April. It was really…read moreenjoyable and worth the price for sure. We sailed on the River Queen which is the smaller boat. The food buffet was very good and there was something for every taste. Very fresh salad with two dressing options, rolls, meltingly tender beef in a rich brown gravy, baked chicken, mashed potatoes, farfalle pasta in red sauce, scrumptious grilled vegetables. And decadent creamy cheesecake for dessert. Free coffee and tea, and reasonably priced bar drinks for purchase. Our server, Anna (Onna?) was most attentive and usually within sight if you wanted something. The whole crew were very professional, very polite and respectful and eager to please. Our entertainer was engaging with his ongoing narration of the sights and historical facts along the river interspersed with banjo music. The two hours went by quickly. I put on my hoodie and spent some time out on deck, where you can smoke 'em if you got 'em. I decided it was time for a cocktail so I ordered an Anchors Away which was delicious, nautically blue, and had a definite kick. I was really looking forward to getting the pictured souvenir glass, but the first of two wrinkles took place as I was advised they were out of them due to some recent large parties on the bigger boat. Boo. If you're going to advertise souvenir glasses, order more than enough to keep them in stock. Anna arranged to give me the drink in the larger souvenir vessel, which is pretty, but heavy ceramic and I don't see myself using it at home other than for a decoration. The second wrinkle was our bar tab printed out as though I ordered multiple drinks. My husband didn't look at it and just handed over the debit card...then I saw it and went up to tell them not to run it but it was too late. Somehow they had already realized it was wrong but it took such a long time for them to figure out how to void the transaction, which bothered me. The cruise director had to get involved to fix it. Her name was Tasha and she was very nice and so apologetic about the situation, she comped our drinks for the trouble and boxed up some cheesecake for us to take home. She seemed to agree with me that if the owners had not decided to "go cashless" last year this would never have happened. I asked her to pass on my comment that it is not good to refuse to accept payment in legal tender American money and I feel it was a bad move. For this reason I will never give five stars even if the cruise is flawless. Nonetheless I hope to have the chance to take a cruise on the River Queen later this year.

We sat toward the back of the boat, and there was a private party happening one floor below us. Unfortunately, between the noise and where the speakers were located, we had a hard time hearing the historical narration from our seats. The information we were able to catch was interesting, and I wish we could have heard more of it. A couple helpful things to know: there are restrooms available on the boat, and there is onsite parking. We originally thought we would need to park under the bridge, but that wasn't necessary, which was nice! Overall, it was a nice way to spend some time on the river and see the area from a different perspective, but there are a few things that could be improved to make the experience better.
