We chose to fish on the Dirty Boat because they advertised 3/4 day split charters at $250 per angler and had 3 openings for a day when we were available. We arrived early at Robbies Marina and met Captain Kit and his mate, Captain Joe who also pilots the head boat. Kit was friendly and spoke to us over a cup of coffee which he paid for. He asked about our wishes and expectations for the day. I was impressed by this. We told him we had interest in Sailfish, Black fin Tuna and Wahoo. He said we could fish over the wrecks for them if the others showed interest. We boarded the Dirty Boat, a 46 ft Hatteras sportfisherman desperately in need of some TLC. Two really great guys arrived and we cast off with only 4 anglers aboard a boat which can accommodate 6(sweet). First stop was at a shallow area by a nearby lighthouse where we caught live bait by hook and line until the chum attracted enough bait for a cast net. Capt. Kit said it was time to put dinner on the boat so we moved a few hundred feet. I didn't really care about fish to eat but the other anglers wanted some. Joe set us up on two light rods for dead sticking fish belly wrapped in a ball oats for Yellowtail. He set two rods for bottom fishing for Mutton Snapper and Grouper. Before long we started getting bit. A number of grouper and snapper were caught and released. We also hit Yellowtails. My first hookup was providing a nice fight before something big ate it off of my line. Then I was disappointed to have two more nice fish break off. Joe inspected the rod and said a broken guide was causing nicks in the line. A new rod resulted in the largest Yellowtail brought aboard. I swapped that rod with the guy on the bottom rod. He got a mutton snapper on it and I got one on his old rod. I the sensed the feel of something trying to swim off with my bait and set the hook on a King Mackerel. I thought the bottom fishing was good when Kit called everybody into the salon and asked if we wanted to risk a run to the wrecks or fish nearby for King's. I felt that Kit asked the question in a very leading way and with only one angler decisively saying I just want to catch fish," Kit started trolling and drifting the nearby depths. Fishing got stupid slow and only 2 or three sharks were caught. Once we got a king to chase the bait but he missed the hook. I could wonder if it was a time or fuel cost thing that kept us from going to the wrecks or if he really though the bite would be better. Weather was okay and it was not a bad trip on the Dirty Boat. I was very pleased with the shared charter, seeing my wife hooked up, the good bottom fishing, having bottled water and ice chest provided and the Crew's friendliness and positive attitude. The things that did not make this a five star trip for me was the Captain's choice to not go to the wrecks for game fish. Why leave tasty fish to chase a species no one was interested in and then fail at locating them? Having a rod aboard with a broken guide which certainly cost me two fish. Spending so much time catching bait. Why not have the bait well filled and run straight to the game fish? The next day at the airport, while waiting to depart a woman is telling other passengers how she hooked into so many sailfish. That was like salt water in a open wound. I will try a different charter boat next time.

Went out on the Dirty Boat with Captain Joe out of Robbie's in Islamorada. What a blast! He made sure we caught fish. He was knowledgable, funny, and really knew what he was doing. He found all the best spots and we were catching fish even when other boats were having a seemingly bad day. I love mahi, it's my favorite fish to eat and he made sure we caught some. We ended up with dozens of mahi. We had so much fish we could hardly carry it all home. That's a good problem to have. I will be fishing on the Dirty Boat again the next time I'm in the keys. Thanks again, guys!

It was a rough day for fishing and didn't catch as many as we'd like but The Dirty Boat made sure we had a great damn time on the water.
